Checkout 51: Earn Cash Back for Grocery Purchases at ANY Store (Smartphone NOT Required)

Hip2Save may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you via trusted partners and affiliate links in this post. Prices and availability are accurate as of time posted. Read our full disclosure policy here.

Are you a fan of Ibotta?! If so, you are definitely going to want to take a look at Checkout51!  Similar to Ibotta (except that a Smartphone is not required!), Checkout51 pays you cash when you purchase select items at your local store(s) or even online.

How does it work?

* Head here and download the Checkout51 App for FREE (available for both iTunes and Android). If you don’t have a Smartphone, you can still use Checkout51 on your computer – just create an account here.

* Browse through the different offers available (I was offered $1 cash back for buying a gallon of milk and lots more – see some of my offers pictured above!).
* Buy items from the Offer List at ANY store (offers are available in limited quantities so be sure to check your offer list before you go shopping to ensure that the offer is still available)
* Upload a photo of your entire receipt using the app or website (it is recommended that you upload your receipt immediately after purchase since there are only limited quantities of offers available)
* When your account reaches $20, you can cash out and they’ll mail you a check
* Note that offers go live on Thursdays at 12AM in each time zone and they expire the following Wednesday at 11:59PM in each time zone. You must submit the receipts while the offers are live.
* Items purchased from online retailers are eligible for cash back. Packing slips are accepted as proof of purchase. Keep in mind that online purchases are subject to the same submission timelines as receipts.

I recently signed up for Checkout51 and was offered a Welcome Gift – Upload my first grocery receipt of $20 or more, and they’ll add $2 to my account! Awesome!

(Thanks to all you readers who have emailed me over the last few days about this app!)

Which stores participate in Checkout 51?

  2. Angela

Cool! Does anyone else had troubles with their Ibotta App? I can’t seem to stay logged in. Perhaps I need to reload it? I’m on an Android device.

    • Angela

      had = have

    • 78Brownie

      Yes. Its a headache.

      • Candice M.

same here,…. will try this new app

    • Andi

What a shame that you’ve had ibotta issues. 🙁 I love ibotta and use it regularly throughout the week. I’m an iphone user. That may be why it works?

      • Rachel @ couponing bio twins

I use it on my Android device w no issues

      • Rae

It work perfect for me on Andriod so I dont think it has anything to do with type of phone.

    • Crescent City Couponer

I can honestly say I’ve never had problems with Ibotta crashing or not loading, but I’m using iOS.

I do like that Checkout 51 accepts receipts from any store; I wish there was a bonus for inviting friends to join.

    • Jennifer

If you’re having problems with the Ibotta app, try deleting it and redownloading. I did that recently and haven’t had problems since – hopefully that may work for you too!

      • 78Brownie

Thanks for the tip, guys. I’m sure it works perfectly for a lot but…maybe I’m just not getting it? I’m going to reinstall.

    • Glenda Stokes

I use an android (Motorola) with ibotta and do not have any problems. So far anyway and I also love ibotta I am also trying checkout 51 and I think I will like it also just wish they offered more things to use it on.

    • Lisa K.

I gave up on ibotta since I had so much trouble using it with my itouch. I am too cheap to buy a smart phone and they never seemed to be able to read my receipts after the first one or two I sent in. I’m hoping that Checkout51 will work better for me since I can just use a computer instead.

    • Lauren

I do. everytimr I go to take a picture of the barcode it wont let me. I tried deleting it and reinstalling, even contacted customer service… no help there so I gave up on it… Hopefully this is better

  3. Dawn

The offers seem a little better than ibotta, and I love that you can shop anywhere! 🙂

    • Heather

I agree! I gave up on Ibotta.

  4. cassie weaver

So, if Ibotta and this new app both offer cash back on the same item, you can earn double cash back?

    • Ashley57

I would think so – on one or two occasions, I had a receipt qualify for Ibotta and Ecobonus. I was able to use it for both.

      • shauna w

        What is Ecobonus?

      • Mona M

I’m with shauna what is ecobonus?

        • mel

you get points for buying eco products at select retailers by uploading your receipt via their app (some products are code entry) Then you can turn the points in towards offers for coupons, fair trade items or donations.
          ecobonus.com

  5. Laura

There is another milk offer on Ibotta – can we submit the same receipt to both Ibotta and Checkout 51?

    • mrs. savings

      Yes, why would you not!?

      • Becky

I also use Receipt Hog – for grocery receipts only.

  6. Katie

I like this new app so far. It seems as if there are pros and cons to both! Ibotta offers more items to earn cash back on but with this app you can earn cash back at ANY store. Plus it seems that we can earn DOUBLE cash back if we use both Ibotta and this app! How awesome:)

  7. Brindha

Thx Collin for letting us know abt it! Just downloaded… Looks like a simple way for cash back!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

You are welcome! Let me know how you like it!

      • Lisa K.

Hey Collin, did you understand the $2 for a $20 grocery purchase to mean it had to include one of the other offer items – or just a flat $2 off a $20+ purchase at any grocery store. I’m asking because I just went to Aldi earlier and spent $34 and am wondering if that receipt will qualify.

  8. Liz

Is there any way they could get to our personal information through submitting receipts? I am excited for opportunities like this but yet am hesitant to share too much personal information and run into problems like target had. Thoughts?

    • Jennifer

I would just block out any PI on a receipt that you don’t want them to have (CC# or DOB for instance). When I need to do something like this I usually cut a post-it note to the size I need to cover it up.

    • Lynne

Doubtful. Even if you use credit/debit cards, on your receipt it only give last 3-4 numbers. I use cash for almost everything, helps me stay on budget easier plus I never have to worry about things like what happened at target.

    • Lisa K.

I work for a bank and I never worry about things like that. There are so many other ways for people to get your personal info that the most important you do is keep an eye on your accounts and report anything unusual you see ASAP.

  9. Shop Now

FYI… Their offers are updated every Thursday, so if you’re a Wednesday shopper as I am, you’ll probably find most offers expired. Like coupons, there are limited qualifying quantities for each promotion.

    • JS

I am a Wednesday shopper..pay day.. didn’t even think of that! Thanks!

  10. Angie

What’s the catch? What are these apps getting out of the deal? Why are they gonna give me money for buying particular items?

    • Angela

It’s another form of marketing, taking paper coupons one step up by gathering your email and such. I just wonder how much personal information the companies will gather from us.

    • chrissy1925

I’d like to know this too

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Hi Angie!

Here is how Checkout51 answers this question in the FAQ Section:

How does Checkout 51 make money?

We partner with brands to bring our members offers. The cash back for our offers are provided by brands. They pay us to find new people (like you) to try their products.

      • Angela

Think about it like “FREE” Product coupons or nice size samples, it’s just a different way of getting you to try the product.

    • julie

Its for marketing. A way for companies to see what brands/types of things consumers buy.

      • Angie

        Thanks, everyone. That makes sense.

    • Melissa

They are getting paid by the companies whose products you are buying. It is actually cheaper for the companies to pay Checkout 51 fifty cents every time you buy a product than it is for them to print hundreds of coupons to get one person to buy it. So

    • Nita

They probably sell our info to marketing companies.

  11. Lina

Does the purchase have to be within the week the offer is available?

    • Stacy

Lina, fine print above says: You must submit the receipts while the offers are live.

  12. maflies1

Anyone know if you can do multiples of a covered item, say milk, and get paid for each?

    • Stacy

I just signed up, and the fine print for the milk offer says: A quantity of (1) of this offer is eligible for cash back per member.

  13. Crescent City Couponer

Is the first grocery receipt of $20 or more upload offer before or after coupons?

    • snoopymom

It says after. I am excited to try this with Ibotta and coupons to maximize savings!

  14. Cherry

Hi! Can we submit receipts that are less than a week old (like ibotta) or does it have to be within their upload dates? Thanks!

    • Lynne

They must be dated within the specified dates for each offer. I just tried my grocery receipt from yesterday and came back that it was not the correct dates.

      • Andrea

I have the same issue…still can’t figure this out!

        • Andrea

Oh just figured it out….thought today was Wednesday!!! OOOPS!

        • Checkout 51

          Hi Andrea,

Our offers are valid for one week. They go live on Thursdays and end on Wednesdays.

To get cash back on our offers this week, products must be purchased between today (Thursday, January 9) and Wednesday, January 15. Don’t forget to upload the receipt before 11:59pm local time on Wednesday!

          Happy saving!

          • Shanshan

Just want to say hi to you Checkout 51. Keep the deals coming! 😉

            • Checkout 51

              Hi Shanshan!

Glad you joined us a member!

We’re excited to be here and looking forward to bringing you great offers every week 🙂

          • Beth

Does this program still work if u pay for your groceries with food stamps. Will u still get a check if u upload your reciept?

  15. CW

For those who have been using it, how do you get your money back? I dont have paypal…

    • lisa

It says above that they send you a.check.

  16. Malyssa

Oh! I’ve been waiting for this post! I wanted to see what others thought about it. It reminds me of Endorse, but hopefully this one will last longer than that app did. I downloaded Checkout 51 last week. I have $5 in my account right now & another $1 is supposed to be added tomorrow. Last week, I redeemed $.50/1 Halls 17ct+, $.50/1 White Rain Shampoo or conditioner, $1/1 Florida’s Natural Orange Juice, $1/1 Wyman’s frozen fruit any variety, & $2 for upload of receipt of $20+. The extra $1 for tomorrow is a bonus for redeeming at least 3 offers in 1 week. Oh, and my receipt was over $60, so I got an entry to win $500. 😀

  17. Malyssa

I’d like to know if there’s a variety of offers between time zones, regions, states, etc. Anyone willing to share? I live in NH, so EST time zone & northeast of the country. My offers at the top are the same as Collin pictured. These are my offers this week:
$1/1 gallon of milk, any brand/variety excluding flavored & non-dairy
$2/1 Aveeno facial care product, any variety excluding cleansing/moisturizing bars
$3/1 RoC anti-aging products, any variety excluding trial sizes
    $1/2 Kellogg’s Special K cereal, any variety
$2/2 Kellogg’s Special K protein bars, any variety
$1/2 Kellogg’s Special K Nourish hot cereal, any variety
$1/2 belVita Soft Baked Breakfast biscuits 8.8 oz, any variety
$1/2 Halls 17+ ct, any variety
$1/1 RITZ bits 8.8 oz, any variety
$1/2 Triscuit crackers 7.6+ oz, any variety
$1/1 FAGE Total yogurt 35.3 oz, any variety
$.50/1 Lender’s bagels, any package of 5+ bagels
$.50/1 Hillshire Farm Deli Select lunch meat 8+ oz, any variety
$.50/1 Scottie’s facial tissue, any box or multi-pack
$.50/1 Earthbound Farm organic carrots, any variety excluding dippin’ doubles carrots & ranch dip

    • Shel

Malyssa, I just signed up in CST (OK) and have all of those same offers. Thanks for taking the time to post yours; it is fun/interesting to see the similarities and/or differences in the regions, isn’t it? Have a great day 🙂

    • Kim

I have the same offers in Tennessee

    • JA

      Same items in Pennsylvania.

    • Malyssa

Maybe the offers will be different in the future? I thought maybe the offers would be different depending on where you live, since it asks for your zip code.

    • makoto72

Most of the same items in OR but not the halls or belvita.

      • Malyssa

Do you have any different items or just 2 less compared to the list?

    • julie

all the same for Colorado, except i also have Alouette spreadable cheese.

    • JHLMOM

I just signed up, but I didn’t get the milk. They did give me some Glade offers though.

  18. Heather

What about stores like target that do groceries and other stuff…wonder if they will take it as a first receipt.

    • Malyssa

If you have the app, just click on that offer & it will give you more info on what the $20 needs to consist of. 😉

      • Heather

        Thanks

    • Glenda Stokes

I did my first receipt from Wal-Mart and it took it also had a gallon of milk on same receipt and it gave me credit for both off of the one receipt.

  19. Jeanette R

    This is awesome!! Thanks!!

  20. Cristie

I wish the had the referral program that Ibotta has!

  21. Karen

was excited to see no phone neede but i have no camera, no scanner so i am out on this one too. too old school for my own good i guess.

    • Jackie

Your local library should have a scanner 🙂

    • cathycampo

get a camera or scanner from freecycle.

  22. Jackie

    Thank you soooooo much Collin!
Downloaded app excited that you can buy items at any location Woop woop!
    Let the fun begin!

  23. WynetteC

The Checkout 51 app looks exactly like the old Endorse app (which unfortunately shut down) to me. Endorse worked the same way starting a week on Thursday and ending on Wednesday. I actually earned a decent amount with endorse and was sad to see them go. I will give this one a try, Thanks for the heads up. I guess the only downside I have noticed is that Checkout 51 doesn’t pay out until you reach $20. (Saving Star and Ibotta cash out at $5)

  24. Dorothy

Thanks so much Collin, and everyone who commented. Just installed the app, and appreciate yet another way to save.

  25. jamie

also the other best money saving app in my opinion is Coupon Sherpa….these two combined save me TONS of dough!! Thanks Colin

  26. Sarah

Wondering if you can redeem the milk offer on (2) half gallons of milk?

  27. Angie

Here’s my problem: I usually only go shopping once a month and my receipt is like a yard long. How can I take a photo of the entire receipt that will still be readable?!

  28. Ann

I just tried submitting 2 receipts on Saturday and they couldn’t read the text so I had to re-submit on Monday a regular receipt with 3 pictures. It’s been 2 days and my receipt is still pending. So you will probably have to take as many pictures as it takes for the whole receipt. You could check with the company though.

  29. cathy

I signed up, uploaded 2 receipts and they were approved. Good experience so far. I looked at the update this morning (update offers every Thursday early in the morning or midnight) but see mostly the same items. I think it will take a me long while before I reach $20.
I stayed a member of Ibotta for a year but only submitted receipts 3 times because that’s how rare I bought those items. And I checked offers all the time for that one year period, but then I left because it was not worth my time.
Ecobonus just closed because they said they never ramped up as much as they had hoped. I liked that they had set high goals, and the ramp up was good in the beginning but flattened.

  30. Maggie

I am disappointed that they require $20 to cash out and then pay by paper check which takes 2-3 weeks to receive by snailmail. How very 1990s of them!

I think they are going to have users lose interest because it takes so long to accrue $20 compared to $5 from iBotta–not to mention waiting weeks for a paper check! I wrote to them and suggested they drop it down to $5 and shift to Paypal — I suggest others contact them as well, through their webpage.

  31. Paul stingo

Does this work if you pay with Ebt foodstamps??

    • cathy

I think so. No matter how you pay for your groceries – cash, debit, credit, check, ebt – that info appears at the bottom of your receipt and items are scanned and printed as a list at the top. I would encourage you to send in your receipt.
I know you are allowed to use coupons with ebt, so this would be viewed in similar manner. checkout51 teams up with the manufacturers to provide the savings, so i think it is the same as redplum teaming up with manufacturers to provide savings like coupons.

      • Holly

No, it’s not the same thing as coupons. When you use coupons with EBT it takes money off your total EBT purchase, you don’t get cash back. With this, you are using EBT and getting cash back, which may not be legal. I would email the company first.

  32. Wendy

I se you mention it can be done on the computer, does anyone know how that works??I don’t have a fancy phone

    • cathycampo

Collin has a link in the middle of her post where it says “website.” click that and create an account. Then follow the steps that Collin described: browse offers, buy the items from any store, upload a photo of receipt from digital camera or use scanner, and you can cash out after reaching $20. I have successfully used my computer to do this and no troubles.

  33. patti

with this app. 51 do you have to actually mail them the receipts by ups in order to get cash back for buying items?

  34. teresa

If one week there is a milk offer and then the next week there is another milk offer, does this mean it’s two separate offers. Another words, if in a two week period, they have 1 Gal. milk, and you purchase a gal. ea. week, do you get to participate both times?

  35. Riley

Can you use ebt with it ?

  36. Beth

Do u still get a check if u pay for your groceries with food stamps. Or do you not qualify for it?

  37. Kathy Ward

I put the app on my nextbook pad and i uploaded my receipt and never received the free $2 gift. I did get the 50 cents for the milk added to my account. So how do I get the $2 added?

  38. Lori

Do you take multiple pics to get the whole receipt sent?

  39. rita

can you use ibotta and checkout 51?

  40. rita

has anyone heard of moola ?
