I am in great need of printer but I don’t think this is it! Reviews seem to be all over the place and it apparently ONLY prints in black and white and is not compatible with Windows 7…..

Thank you for pointing it out, though…will watch in hopes of another printer deal to come!!

The ink seemed expensive though it seemed to last long.

Printer may be cheap, but the ink will cost you way to much. Look at ink prices for models before you buy, they vary greatly. Worth paying a little more for the printer to save on the ink.

I had a conversation with a copier repair guy once. He told me that the money is primarily made on the ink, not on the printer or copier. So the companies can practically give the printers away and still make a great profit.

We have a Lexmark printer that was not the cheapest on the market – somewhere in the middle. But we only have to pay about $5 for a Lexmark black ink cartridge. (Color is a lot more). We have saved a lot of money by paying some extra upfront on the printer instead of going for the cheapest ones that had the higher ink costs.

I was just thinking this morning I would love to see a post on favorite printers! Best reviews, most economical for cartridges, etc – I’m sure other could chime and share what thier favorite ones are! Thanks!

I would recommend the Brother laser printers. I have HL 2140, HL 2240 and newest HL2270DW (about $75 on sale). Compatible toner cartridges will run around $20 on Newegg, Amazon or Ebay and these last forever. I’m over 2400 copies and still going strong on my toner cartridge.

I also have the 2140 and 2170 and I agree with you that Brother toner lasts much longer. TIP: when your Brother printer says ‘low toner’, take out the toner and shake it. On one of the sides of the toner, there is a circle where the printer senses when the toner is low. Cut a small piece of post-it, thin cardboard, duct tape–anything dark or opaque enough not to let light through and cover that circle with tape. That’ll give you about 200-250 more pages (depends on what you’re printing).

I have the HL 2240 ! replaced cartridge twice in last year.. totally worth the money I think i found mine on sale at staples for $80 I got my sister a wireless one for $100

I was steered toward a Brother HL-2240 Mono laser printer on another site and I have been more than pleased. I have printed daily, mass quantities, and it does great. I order generic toner on ebay for under $10 and just replaced the drum for under $20 after couple years heavy use. It prints much clearer than ink jets and toners seem to last at least 10 times as long. They usually go on sale for about $50 so great price as well…though I would spring for the wireless one when it goes on sale for $80 or $90 as you could possibly print q’s from iPads and smart phones.

Just be careful as not all wireless printers can be printed to from wireless devices. In order to use this feature, the printer must have AirPrint. Just being a wireless printer is not enough. There are some apps out there that allow you to print to the printer from an iphone, but you must have another app open and running on your computer. If you want to be able to print from iphone or iPad, look for the AIRPRINT feature on the printer before you buy.

This is a laser printer. Laser printers take toner cartridges, which unlike ink, lasts on average about 10,000 pages. The cost may seem extreme at first, especially if you have never bought one before AND if you are looking at the brand name cartridge. But if you average out the cost, it’s worth it. Aftermarket cartridges run a lot less, just like ink. Also, toner doesn’t dry out or go bad really, like ink does. It’s a worthwhile investment, especially for couponers. I print a lot at home both personally and professionally and I still only need to buy one cartridge about every two years.

    • Patty

I second everything Lisa said. I have a Canon laser printer, and one toner cartridge lasts me years.

    • Karen

I can’t agree more. The cost per print for laser printer is so much better than Inkjet printers. People who would say differently have never used a laser printer before. Although a laser printer is best for document printing (B&W), not photo printing unless you get a color laserjet which is more expensive.

      • Lisa

Yes, monochrome laser printers are not for photo printing, however I have NEVER had a coupon not scan properly printing with a laser printer. If they didn’t scan, it was for other reasons, and NOT because it was a laser printer.

I am currently using a Samsung wireless black and white laser printer. Toner is less expensive than ink! I was able to refill the original cartridge a couple of times with cheap black toner refill kits found on ebay or amazon for about $6. This particular printer requires a chip on the cartridge that has a counter. So it stops printing after the maximum count, which is an issue since some of my prints are only a single coupon (I typically flip the page and print on the rest of the white space for efficiency). There is always toner left inside when I go to refill, and I haven’t figured out how to bypass or fool the counter. After a few refills, the prints were not clean, lots of gray haze coming through. I finally purchased a new cartridge for around $25. I would never use color to print my coupons, but that’s just my preference.

A laser printer cartridge will last you much, much longer than an ink cartridge and over time it is a money saver. I have this particular printer(no problems with coupons printing) and use this for my small office(5(3 have Windows7) stations, 4 laptops(3 have windows7) & 3(2 have windows8.1) tablets), it prints from XP stations. Our IT Tech updated our drivers online and we have not had any problems with it. We have a Dell Laser Printer we use for maps, graphs, presentations that need to be in color. I also have a Dell Color Ink Printer our secretary uses which sucks up ink like crazy, its $49.99 per cartridge every month to replace(note: I printed coupons from this inkjet and took the coupons to Target, it would not read).
I recommend this printer for the price and price of toner cartridges.

I too use a brother 2140 laser black ink printer. Was a great price. Laser is much more economical for couponing. I only wish it was wireless. Don’t want to buy another one since this one performs like a champ and I’ve been using it for about 5 years now and not a single problem.
