I got some around valentines day. They were 2.50 in michigan. So 1.50 after coupon. There was only 5 pieces of candy. The candy was stale. I won’t pay again.
funny you should mention this. here’s my story.
i also purchased 2 boxes at my local walgreens around valentine’s day 2014. one boxed when opened (demets’s turtles in sea salt) i noticed each and every candy had completely turned blue/green shade. after biting into one, i also noticed they were stale.
so i did some investigating. i called demets candies company and read her the secret date code on box. i say secret, because you and i wouldn’t know what all those numbers and letters mean.
they are a combination of production and date codes. i was floored when i found out my candies were made in the year 2012 and were good thru 6/2013.
they tell me this is a store problem, when not rotating the stores stock/storage and or temperature control. they demets were very nice. offered me a box for free.
that afternoon i decided to bring the box of chocolates to my walgreens and explain that they are selling out dated chocolates. manager was apologetic. he tells me he’s going to check the rest of the boxes on the shelf now with that date code and pull them off.
now in the meantime i had to pick up milk and when i went to go pay. manager had given me a gift card with the amt. that i had paid for chocolates. nice gesture.
i had been in the store for about 35 minutes, conversing with one of the employees, when i decide to go look at this particular chocolate and check the date codes. well guess what, all the boxes of sea salt turtles had the same code date as mine. as of then, none of the boxes were pulled.
i’m going to check back in a day or two and see if the boxes were pulled. kinda makes me mad if they don’t remove outdated product. i know that they walgreens will lose a lot of money for discarding all these boxes, but first and foremost the customers well being comes first. eating these candies won’t kill you. one may get sick or not.
well i’m still here… lol
and now that i know the secret code, with coupons in hand, you betcha i’ll be checking the dates on my next purchase. here’s a clue. look for boxes that start with a 3 or 4 on them. that means 2013 and 2014. now 2013 chocolates are still good, because according to demet’s they have a shelf life of 10 mts. to a 1 yr. from that date.
