The Color Run™, also known as the Happiest 5k on the Planet :D, is a unique paint race that celebrates healthiness, happiness, individuality, and giving back to the community. The Color Run is a five-kilometer, un-timed race (love that!) in which participants are doused from head to toe in different colors at each kilometer. Plus, the fun continues at the finish line with a gigantic “Color Festival,” using even more colored powder to create millions of vivid color combinations.

The Color Run caters to all ages – kids and adults alike and to all levels – first time runners to professional athletes (in fact, over 60% of Color Runners are first-time 5k runners!).

On a side note, I ran The Color Run Race in Boise last August along with both my sister, Bryn, and her sister-in-law. We had such a great time – this was honestly one of my most favorite races ever. It was extremely family-friendly and geared for all ages – there were families with strollers, teenagers, grandparents, college students etc. (they even had a kid dance-off contest at the end – so cute!). And I loved that the focus of the race was more about having fun and getting covered in paint versus being the first one to cross the finish line.

If you have never participated in The Color Run, I highly encourage you to check it out and see if a race is coming to a city near you. I am signed up to run The Color Run Race in Boise again this coming August along with all 3 of my kids and my hubby! Should be lots of fun! :)[/h2s_box]

my friend that has lost over 100 pounds did this and said it was the most amazing part of her weight loss journey

    • RT

Wow! How amazing and inspiring! I’ve lost around 35 pounds and it has been really challenging! I can’t imagine the dedication it took for her to lose 100 pounds because it doesn’t happen over night! Please tell her I said, “Bravo! Keep up the hard work!”.

    • sara

Same here lost 70 pounds and it is an every day challenge but being able to play with my kids is awesome. Tell her people like her inspire me in my journey. Thanks 🙂

  6. Jessica

    • Ivy

Is this the date for Visalia?
I thought it was sold out already

  7. Em

Serious question- don’t you breathe the powder in?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

From The Color Run site –> The powder is 100% cornstarch based and even gluten free. We recommend wearing sunglasses or goggles, and a bandana over your mouth and nose in the color zones just for extra protection.

      Hope that helps! 🙂

    • RDL

You do. It’s supposedly harmless but a friend of mine ended up with very, very sore and red eyes for a few days from doing it. Her eyes were SO bloodshot and they looked awful.

    • jen c

Sunglasses keep it out of your eyes and you could wear a bandana to keep it out of your nose/mouth but you can just hold your breath for the few seconds as you run through the color station. Color runs are fun!

  8. Sarah

No information on the site about minimum ages of kids to participate. Does anyone know?

    • Ann

I don’t know about this one but for the Color in Motion run it was all ages, wih babies being pushed in strollers with the plastic covering over the stroller, although I personally wouldn’t bring a baby so that they don’t get cornstarch in their eyes, etc.

    • JD

My son was 2 when our family did the Color Run in Philly. My husband emailed the event coordinators to make sure we could bring a stroller or a wagon for him. They responded right away and said that they didn’t have an age minimum, and strollers/wagons were most welcome! We had a cover for the wagon and my son wore a hat. He was fine with all the powder. We also did the Color Run in Atlantic City the following year. My daughter and her friend, both 6, walked/danced/twirled through all the color stations! 🙂 Hope that helps.

I did the Color me Rad race (same thing diff name in wa) last year and it was so fun BECAUSE we took our 6 year old and she had a blast!

    • nicolegammeter

      Awesome! 🙂

I did the Color in Motion run a couple weeks ago and had a great time! It really is for all ages and fitness levels, and you can just walk if you like. The feature was pre-race when everyone was throwing colors on each other, and they did have color stations to run through at every mile, but pre-run is when I really got my colors on! The run was just a nice add-on.

loved your skirts ! where did you get those ?

    • RT

These aren’t exactly the same but they are adorable running tutus made here in San Diego by a cancer survivor! She is also a running coach for a program here for little girls called Girls on the Run and part of the proceeds from the sale of the tutus goes to support the program! https://glam-runner.com/about/

My 7 year old son and I just ran this in Dallas last month. It was sooooo much fun!! He has asthma and had no problem with the colors. He was even rolling on the ground in it. Totally recommend it!!

  13. Carmen

Excited to do this run in June with my 10 year old in Chicago! This will be my 1st 5k run!

  14. jaksmom8

My daughter and I are doing the Color Me Rad 5K this Saturday in Oklahoma City! We did the Run or Dye last year in the rain! They are so much fun!!!

  15. Kelly

That seems like so much fun! Looks like Wyoming is the only state that doesn’t have a participating city. Maybe there will be one here next year. Hope everyone has a blast! 🙂

“Color Run is often billed as some sort of new-world cleansing experience. Bearing more than a passing resemblance to India’s Holi Festival — where attendees are also covered in colored powder — the Color Run piggybacks off of the well-meaning religious festival by charging otherwise regular folk the chance to pay $35 to $50 to get covered with colored corn starch … and also “be exposed” to charities. But much of the money doesn’t actually go to the charities; it goes straight into the organizers’ pockets.

A lot of racers are completely unaware that they’re being taken for a metaphorical ride, and it appears many, when told, are upset that what appeared to be a charity race is nothing more than a positively charged shakedown. In a recent Sacramento Bee article, writer Richard Chang explains how some attendees have no idea at all about the for-profit nature of the race.

Of the 35 people The Sacramento Bee interviewed, only two were aware that the race was for-profit. The Color Run does, however, donate a fraction of its revenue to a charity. Still, some were upset to learn the cash was flowing directly into the organizers’ pocketbooks.” https://theblot.com/are-color-runs-scams-777076

According to information available on the internet, the Color Run franchise makes in excess of $400,000 per race. Many cities (i.e. Boston) do not allow Color Runs because they feel they are a scam. I was sad to see Hip2Save promoting this business.

    • Anne

All Collin has stated was that it was fun and it was a good time……hardly “promoting” it. And perhaps some people don’t care about your information because they just want to have some fun? We all pay for fun all the time! Movies, ball games, skiing, travel, etc, etc. Lighten up.

      • MEK

The problem is with transparency. They say they promote charity, but only a tiny amount actually goes to the charity. I’d don’t know about you, but I don’t pay $35 per person to go to the movies. I thought HIP2SAVE was a website promoting frugality– You know living well without spending a ton of money.

        • MEK

Oh, and by the way, offering a $5 discount is a “promotion”. (She gave out a promo code.) So she is promoting it.

  17. Samantha

Isn’t this the Indian festival Holi? Holi festival is 3000 years old.

    • MEK

I think they are taking the Hindu festival of Holi and commercializing it for profit.

  18. Brittany

The Color run website (which was included in the post) very clearly states that they are for profit. It also says they partner with charities when they have the opportunity. It also says that it is just about people having fun, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. What people want to pay for their entertainment is their business; especially if they are trying to be frugal and just once want to spend the money and just have a good time outside with other people . So MEK, stop raining on other peoples parade.
