I like the silhouette better because you can just use fonts and things on your computer instead of buying cartridges.

Skip the Cricut and go for a Silhouette! Cheaper in the long run because you don’t have to buy any cartridges.
The newer cricut is similar to the silhouette. No cartridges, you purchase images online as well. It is the cricut explore. If you don’t want to hassle with the computer when scraping this one is a good deal. I have one and enjoy it.
I started off with a Cricut when the original one came out. Have well over 150 cartridges, programs, etc. I just got the new explore. I also just got a silhouette. If you are just starting off crafting I would suggest the silhouette cameo, as it is a much better machine (and silhouette doesn’t abandon products). The explore is similar to it, but the service at silhouette is much better.
