I know this has nothing to do with couponing but does anyone have a septic tank at their house. We are in the process of buying a house with a well and septic tank and everyone is trying to talk us out of it. They’re telling us we would never want to deal with the septic tank. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

    • Lana

We have had a septic tank for over 30 years. Yes, there are cost associated with them and we have put in new field lines in both houses that we owned with one but it was not a huge expense. Just have it pumped out every 3 years or so and you are good. We also have a well, again over 30 years, and love having nonchlorinated water to drink and bathe in. I would definitely taste the water and also require a test to be sure there is nothing scary lurking there. We have put new pumps on and they are just another maintenance expense. Cost wise I think it is still probably cheaper to have your own than pay the fees for municipal services.

    • Lana

One more thing-we are careful about putting bleach into the system and we are a green cleaners family so that probably helps ours to stay healthy.

    • Brenda

We have a septic tank, but no well. Our town doesn’t have sewer so everyone has septic. We’ve only been here a little over a year but no problems. We were told to have it pumped every 2-3 years. I know it will be an expense when it needs to be replace but hopefully that is many, many years away. The only thing I miss is our garbage disposal. They suggest not having one with septic. Good luck with the new house!

    • Amie

We have one and have never had any problems. We live in MI and they are very common here. We live in a newer home. Not sure about the older tanks and how they hold up.

    • Jane

I just moved from Montana and we had one there. The home was built in the late 70’s and the septic was still functioning just fine. Before you purchase (I also am a Realtor), you should have the septic pumped and inspected. Septic systems are just fine and are a regular fixture in rural communities, but like anything else you should maintain it regularly and be sure that your other plumbing is in good working condition, for example a running toilet can overflow the tank and result in having to put in new drainfields in a long term situation.

    • Andrea

Thank you everyone for your help. I really appreciate it.

    • shop4mybabies

have the septic inspected before you purchase…you are supposed to have them pumped yearly to maintain best longevity…but when they do need to be replaced they can be 15 grand and up. we had one in high school, you would go out to the fields and see your fruity pebbles you just flushed that morning floating in the field, so do you know what else was floating out there? haha….obviously ours needed replacing. I love sewer, but hate the bill

      • shop4mybabies

oh and if your well isn’t on a back up generator then it’s a problem…power goes out, no water.

      • Andrea

Haha. The seller is getting it inspected this week and also getting it pumped. Fingers crossed that all goes well. Thank you.

We just moved out of a house with a well and septic system. We lived there for 4 years and the house was 14 years old. Well water tastes so much better than city water. The only problem we found with having a well was that when the power went out we had no water. Make sure your well is hooked up to a generator if you are in an area prone to storms and power outages. The septic tank failed inspection when we sold the house and it cost over $3000 to replace. Luckily the rest of the system was fine but we were shocked that it failed at only 14 years old. We were very careful about not putting chemicals into the system, we never used our garbage disposal, and we had it pumped twice in our four years there. However, there were two owners before us and we have no idea what they did. If you are diligent about the maintenance you should be okay. Our situation does not seem to be the case for most people, luckily.

There is a solution for the no water situation. You can install a water softener/purifier that will allow you to have water when the power is out. If you have a Costco nearby, ask about the Puronics water solution. The website is: http://www.puronics.com/residential-solutions.php

We have a septic and have had nothing but trouble since we moved in last Feb. It has made me never want another one. This one has cost big $$$ and will work one day, not another day. We have to wait a few days on the septic co to come each time there is a problem. This house has the aerobicI was just going to text. We literally just got home. Eye apt was at 4 but didn’t get out till about 5:30. Thanks for the book. Did u need to come by? I’ll be here now or afternoon tomorrow (early). I still plan to go thurs. sprinklers. Nothing but trouble. My mother in law has had a septic for 30 years with no problem. This one is a lemon. I’ll never have another. We do everything right, too. No chemicals or food down drain etc. I wash less than I’d prefer etc. We really baby it and it still messed up. I think it’s failing.

        Good grief that inserted part of a text! Sorry. This is what I said;

We have a septic tank that is over 50 years old and no problems but once a month we put Rid-X down the toilet stool. We have pumped it out once in twenty years that I have lived here

      • Andrea

Thanks again for everyone’s help. It’s very much appreciated. I’m not going to let everyone scare me. There’s pros and cons just as there is with city water and sewer.

Anyone been to either the Burbank or Calabasas, CA locations? Neither are super close to me so I was wondering if it was worth the drive. Thanks!

    • Clarissa

I’ll be going to the Calabasas one tomorrow so I’ll report back. Not holding my breath though. Went to dollar tree based on another post today and those types of deals don’t seem to exist out here.

I was hoping to find the InnoTab games, but no luck.

  18. Stacy

Spartanburg, SC has TONS of 500 and 1,000 piece puzzles. I also picked up some lacing sets for kids, a picture frame, and a couple other odds and ends. Tons of books on cats and a few cookbooks still left.

  19. Ashley

I bought close to 30 items at my Barnes and noble in Memphis. I scored some really cute large bags that I will use as gift bags, loads of books and stuffed animals! There were vetch cartridges but my kids are a little too old for them. Also, I will be donating lots of the books to the classrooms!
