Happy Friday: Saying Thanks
Sent from reader, Kerry:
My Mom lives in a nursing home and enjoys giving small gifts at Christmas to everyone who helps make her life so comfortable. This means she wants to thank her nurses and nursing aides, the housekeepers, the cooks and dietary aids, the maintenance department, the gardener, and the activities staff. She needs 75-80 gifts to thank all 3 shifts of employees. (The nursing home does not allow staff to accept monetary gifts.)
Thanks to Hip2Save, I collect “deals” throughout the year and then make “sets” of gift items. I package the gifts in clear cellophane bags with some paper shreds in the bottom so that the gift can be seen. They include everything from gloves, hand cream, bags of chocolates, foaming hand soaps, Christmas ornaments, ear buds, batteries, packages of pens, all the things you post on Hip2Save.
During the week before Christmas, my Mom calls every person to her room to wish them a Merry Christmas. She has a basket (with 15-20 gifts at a time) on her table and she lets each person choose a gift. They can see what is inside and pick something they like. My Mom loves having the company and her caregivers enjoy looking through the basket. This will be the third year we’ve done this and I thought your readers might enjoy this idea as a way of thanking nursing home staff!

How lovely & thoughtful!!
Great idea! How thoughtful of her and her daughter:)
This is just the nicest thing I’ve heard in a while. Most people wouldn’t think to do this because the number of employees is just too high. You made it possible for your mom to really thank everyone. I worked as a Speech Pathologist in nursing homes for years and those are some hard-working employees. Awesome job!
Kerry you are a wonderful daughter to put the effort to make all those packages and your mom is truly a wonderful woman. This really was a wonderful Friday post.
Your mother is a beautiful person. Thank you for sharing this heart warming story with us. Please let her know that we are all inspired because of her.
So great, thanks for sharing that.
That’s so wonderful!! Thanks for sharing a great story with us!
Such a sweetheart. Love the idea.
Thank you for sharing such a heart-warming story! And thank you Hip2Save!!
So thoughtful! You’re a great daughter to do that for your mom! She’s sweet to be so thankful.
This is so absolutely sweet of you to do for your mother and for the people she gives them to. May you be blessed beyond measure for having done this for so many years.
True spirit of Christmas – giving from the heart to those who least expect anything in return. Your very kind and generous! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND HER!
You are an awesome gal , kind hearted
So awesome! You both sound like wonderful people ๐
Love this idea! So thoughtful and I’m sure it means a lot to the staff ๐
I love that idea! i may borrow it for my mom in law. thank you so much for sharing, it’s a wonderful caring thing to do for the people who care for her and she makes friends with day to day.
That’s wonderful,thank you for sharing.
I can relate to this this post because my mom is in a nursing home as well and I have been thinking of ways that we can give back to the nurses, aides, etc, at Christmas time. This post truly touched my heart!
This is so beautiful! This is a shining example of how giving to others really does make a person feel good. ๐
That is awesome, what a nice way to give thanks.
True spirit of Christmas!
That’s so sweet. What a nice and thoughtful idea.
Aww so nice I also work at a retirement home ๐ and but that’s also against our policy. Not allowed to receive any gift but we can enjoy a bouquet of flowers in the front office,’ just an idea.
This is also the policy where I work. No individual gifts are allowed. Kerry’s idea is so very sweet, but please check with management before giving gifts to avoid disappointment.
That is so cool, what a wonderful thing for both of you to do!
Awesome!
This is such a heartwarming post! What a wonderful thing to do!
I love this story! That is fantastic you make it possible for her to give out the gifts.
What a wonderful story!! You and your mom are truly awesome people.
Thanks for sharing!
So sweet…so beautiful! What a great idea. I was tearing up just reading this. You and your mom are special people. Sounds like she raised an amazing person. Blessings to you this holiday season. ๐
So thoughtful and sweet! As a side note, my Walgreens sets up at tree for our local nursing home. It’s kind of like an angel tree for kids but it’s for seniors. They ask for things like socks and postage stamps. Check your local Walgreens!!
This warms my heart! I am a Mary Kay consultant and am currently doing an Adopt a Grandparent fundraiser for Christmas. Hoping to donate gifts to each resident of our local nursing home. If you would every be interested in adding Mary Kay products to your baskets I would love to offer them at my wholesale prices as my way of contributing! http://Www.marykay.com/nleegate
Thanks and God Bless!
How sweet of you and your mom to be so considerate of others and their kindness. This is a truly inspirational message of the true meaning of Christmas. Thanks for sharing!!! May you all be blessed this Christmas season.
What a heartwarming and touching post! I hope you and your Mom have a wonderful holiday season!
Great idea! Nice way to say “thank you”.
Wow this is absolutely AMAZING!!! I LOVE THIS!!!!! That is so wonderful that you and your mom do this!!!!! I work in the nursing field and I can’t even tell you how much I know the staff appreciates that!! Even a card or a simple thank you can go such a long way and sometimes people forget that!! You guys are definitely going wayyy above and beyond and this is just really amazing to see!!!! I hope you and your mom have a wonderful holiday season!!! Thanks so much for sharing!!
That’s a thoughtful and wonderful thing to do. Love this story.
That’s very warm felt!
This is the best thing I read today- I wish her & the family a wonderful holiday season!
Wow, so generous and thoughtful!
My daughter works in an assisted living center and when someone takes her hand and says thank you, she melts! Hopefully you and your mother know that your thoughtfulness goes such a long way. Very kind of you both!
That is wonderful!!!! What a blessing both of you are!
This is wonderful! Thank you for sharing!!! ๐
I need to do this for my grandma at her nursing home. Thanks!
That is amazing. I am a CNA who works in a nursing home and we have the same kind of policy, only we can only accept food items that are for all staff to share. That sounds like so much fun for your family member. I would love to witness the joy that brings her ๐Thank you for your involvement. Merry Christmas to you both
This is amazing! My husband is a nursing home administrator, and though he’s not on the floor like the amazing nurses, CNAs and staff, it can be an incredibly difficult and often thankless job. This is a truly touching idea and act that hits home for me:)
What a great post! Very sweet. Definitely very thankful that I have been able to get some stuff that I might not have been able to otherwise get because of Collins time and effort. Thank you.
Kerry do you ever take your mom out of the nursing home?
Yes; she likes to go out to eat, to the beauty shop, and shopping. We’ll go out to see the Christmas lights/decorations, too.
