I bought 2- 8 pks of Energizer AA batteries for $5.97 each, and there is a coupon on them for a $10 walmart e-gift card when you buy 2. So 16 batteries for $2 seemed pretty good to me.
Don’t forget to go through ebates or something similar. Lowes is 2% and Home Depot is 3%.

Dollar Tree has Sunbeam brand C and D batteries. Good for alarm clock backup and other low drain things.
