Walmart Savings Catcher Update: No Longer Applies To Produce & Bakery (+ No Comparisons to Drug Stores)

Do you currently use Walmart’s Savings Catcher program?

If so, take note of these updates that took effect this past weekend. Effective February 14th, Savings Catcher will not apply to produce and bakery items. Additionally, Walmart is limiting comparisons to offers of other mass market retailers, grocery and dollar stores and removing comparisons with drug stores. Darn!

[h2s_box width=”2″ style=”dotted” color=”#F2A20C”]

As a reminder, Savings Catcher compares your receipt to advertised prices from top stores in your area, and if it finds a lower advertised price, you get the difference on a Walmart eGift Card – all you have to do is enter your receipt and then Walmart does the rest of the work for you. Or click “Redeem to Bluebird” on your Savings Dashboard and Walmart will double your Reward Dollars and turn them into Walmart Bucks – separate funds on your Bluebird Account that can only be spent at Walmart or online at Walmart.com. Click here to find more information on the program and click here to check out a video about the program.[/h2s_box]

Can we still price match with drug stores?

    • allie

      no

      • allie

OOps yes you can price match

    • Christine

      Yes!!!

  2. Natasha

I know the date for the Bluebird promo is fast approaching, has anyone done this? Is it easy to use? Any problems? I have around $75 in my savings catcher and im looking to double it with the Bluebird but i was wondering what everyone else thought about it! Thanks in Advance for your help!

    • Lin Ogilvie

I do the Bluebird thing. So far I’ve gotten over $150 in “free” stuff. Not complicated to sign up and it has been a good deal for me. Does take about a week from scanning receipt to getting Bucks on card. (Also the card takes about a week from when you sign up to arrive in the mail.) I do the scanning of the receipt and the “point” transfer on an android phone. However I have noticed that WalMart does not catch everything. I do my regular coupon thing at other stores so that I don’t miss the deals. HTH

      • natoli

Do you have to have a specific amount in your savings catcher? I only have $5.00 is there any trick to getting more?

    • Amber C

It’s super easy. That’s the way I did it. I got a card online, it took a few days to come in, but I know you can get one for free at Walmart right now for free. It’s easy you just tie it to the Walmart savings catcher and press the button and it’s instantaneous. The money is put onto a special part of the card that can only be used at Walmart. It works very well. And I’m all about doubling my money.

    • Hunterwoody

I have done it. You can do it now and keep on accumulating. It’s easy. Good luck.

    • Lori

Love the Bluebird Matching. I have made over $100 in matching funds.

    • Sharon

I’m up to $405 in savings thanks to Bluebird. Plus I got 3 $10 small business Saturday credits. I think it’s a decent product.

    • Natasha

Thanks so much for your input, im glad to see that its easy, im definitely going to go with the BlueBird now!

    • tiffany

the bluebird double ends feb 28 2015 as far as i know

    • Z

I have to ask: what’s a Blue Bird card?? Is it like a credit card?

    • chrissy

I would do it now dont wait i got my card back in December but been putting my $ on it since and still getting double you dont have to wait

    • momof4spoiled1s

I just signed up for the Blue Bird card but make sure you read all of their terms and conditions. They are pretty thorough on covering all their bases. They pretty much want your signature in blood and want you to give up everything. Just an FYI. HTH

  3. Jen

Before the change, it compared my purchases to 70+ stores…now I get 25.

    • Brey

I just did it yesterday and it compared to 50 stores. On average it used to be 96

      • Kelly

That’s still WAY more than for my location…BEFORE the change it only compared to 19 stores. =/

        • Kelly

I feel your pain. 😉 I live in a small town and before they changed it, it compared 7 stores.

          • jlgclassof2000

Yep….my bf gave me his receipt from his trip to small town this wkend…a whopping 5 stores!

    • Lisa

Yeah I was wondering why I went from 74 stores to 40 something.

  4. jess

To be expected it’s walmart after all!

  5. Brey

I thought this app was a joke to begin with. I had it since it came out and have only saved 40 cents. I go to Walmart weekly.

    • sarah

Yea I hear ya. If at random I’ll go there I’m surprised the whole like 10 times at best I’ve went there since the app started I’ve saved $4 and change woo hoo. I try not to go there much in general we are rural so sometimes hard to find things just have to be found at places like Wal-Mart….

    • NJD

I have saved a grand total of 55 cent. I know there were several things I purchased that it did not catch. I’ve not had great success, but my friend had over $70.

  6. Jennifer

Hmm…..so I guess they really don’t intend to give you the lowest price huh?

  7. Melissa

Most of the time Savings Catcher doesn’t find any better deals. I cashed out my $3.55 with my Bluebird card and it worked fine. I’m not sure how I could use only the Walmart funds from my Bluebird card though – I have money on the card for other things.

I price match and they never ask me what store.

    • angela

They use it like a gift card, you pay any remaining balance after the rewards.

    • tiffany

slide card as first payment it will deduct what is on there and you pay with another form of payment when done with the first…

  8. mb

thats what i was gonna say walmart commericals etc are all about saving you money in reality not so much the ones around here take stock off the shelves when theres a good q wth doesn’t make any sense hate walmart wish we had a super target hope u all have a great day

  9. diane

This program never worked for me. My Walmart is in a smaller town and I emailed them about what stores they compare to. There were only 2, radio shack and kmart. I’d still have to price match to the local grocery stores including albertsons.

  10. Agata

I rarely shop at Walmart anymore, their meat and produce are expensive and the quality is not the greatest so I get those at a local grocery store. The rest of like personal care stuff I get at CVS with coupons and ECB’s.

    • cb

I agree. Their produce has always been gross at the one I go to. Their own brand of meat is really questionable. So glad mine recently started carrying a good brand of grassfed meats. That’s all I will buy now.

      • Lily

Talk about gross – in the same shopping trip I found mold inside a package of shredded cheese AND guacamole dip that was over a month expired. I gave the items to an employee stocking and he just said “oh ok.” Those items could have seriously gotten my family sick. NOT OK!

        • Ana

          You realize cheese is mold….

          • Lily

Shredded cheddar cheese isn’t supposed to be green and fuzzy. But thanks for the biology lesson.

          • meg

So u would be ok if u bought a bag of cheese and it was green with mold???? Whatever

            • sussieqt

I’d be just fine with it because by the time I got through complaining, they’d give me a giftcard to compensate me for my time and gas.

  11. Hilary

Wow, I had gotten a gift card for $20 from our savings and am almost close to $10 again. What a bummer. Guess they lost too much money on it. I don’t expect from them anymore. Nice while it lasted.

  12. HM

Can we still price match at the register with Drug Stores?

  13. CW

Like others, it was a waste of time for me. I learned from the opening of a new Super Target that the ones within a 2 mile radius of a Super Walmart are cheaper than other Super Targets so I started to compare. Lots of items at my Super Targer were 2-3 cents cheaper/the price of my Super Walmart…or at most 5 cents more. So given the conditions of most Walmarts, severe lack of service in the store and few registers, the not so great produce and meat, Savings Catcher meant nothing to me. I got 35 cents since it started and there are much nicer stores to shop – well, really all of them are nicer than Walmart. Every time you think they are trying to do something to raise their standards for customers, they drop to a new low.

  14. Shara

It is free money that we are receiving. I already price match, use coupons and buy the lowest priced items and I still have made over $25.00 with the Savings Catcher. So, anything that I do get is just a gift and I thank Wal-Mart for it. Most drug stores require a card to get the advertised prices anyway and Wal-mart has never ad matched those sort of prices anyway.

    • Christine

Unfortunately, it isn’t “free” money we are receiving. It is our own money that we are receiving back, that can only be used at Walmart, of course. Personally, I would rather just keep the money in my pocket to begin with by shopping somewhere else that has the better price, then I can spend whatever I save wherever I want.

      • allie

That is so true, I tried Saving Catcher when it first came out waste of time, I’ll stick to the drug stores, can’t stand the Walmart anyway, I do so much better @ Ingles and The Kroger. Kroger’s latest Mega Sale I paid OOP $25.47 for over $100.00 of food. Now thats the way to save.

      • Sharon

The convenience was great, though. I didn’t have to run to Kroger, Martin’s (Giant), and Food Lion to buy the loss leaders. I could get most everything in one stop (although I won’t buy produce or meat from Walmart) so it saved time and money. Plus by the time they doubled the savings a lot of stuff was free or practically free.

      • chrissy

The free money was the doubled money on the bluebird card

    • Lilly

I also appreciate the Savings Catcher program. I live in a small town where the nearest Target, Publix, and other major stores are an hour away, so I am thankful that Walmart will price match these stores and I don’t have to drive an hour away.

      • Heather

I live in an exact same area-remote. But my savings catcher does not compare with those same stores, roughly 55 minutes away.

  15. irene

I am shocked by how high the produce prices are at my mom’s Walmart. Every grocery store within 5 miles had gone out of business so they now have a monopoly. It was upsetting to see their commercials touting low prices on TV before the holidays — most of it was for processed foods. Walmart is contributing to the obesity epidemic!

    • meg

Lol…no. people are! Don’t blame a store for obesity. No store forces people to eat junk. People make that chose for themselves.

      • Jenn

        Agreed!

      • irene

Have you looked up the word “contribute”? Of course a person has autonomy, but the least expensive option is always more appealing.

    • sharon

I agree about produce at Walmart. Not great quality and so very expensive. I buy at Sprouts for best price and secondarily at King Soopers.

      • jlgclassof2000

LOVE LOVE LOVE Sprouts! Just wish it werent almost 15miles away

    • Emily

Because target and walgreens and cvs and small grocers sell strictly organic nongmo foods that have no trans fat. And walmart has an evil ability to make people buy junk food from them and then eat too much.

      • meg

Omg. Put the blame where it belongs! No store “makes” you buy junk food. If a person is over weight and unhealthy then they are to blame….not a store. It’s about time people realize if you r going to eat nothing but junk and sit on your butt then u will probably gain weight! Everything in moderation…..

  16. Heather

Pfff. Those drug stores are what got me cash back.
    Thumbs down wallyworld.

    • angela

I know rihht!! I’ll just start shopping the cheaper places!!

  17. Lisa

That sucks. I buy a lot of produce there

  18. Sharon

I’ve loved the app but once they stop doubling I’m headed back to Kroger. I’ve saved over $400 in 7 months and gotten a ton of free or almost free stuff. I probably got 25 bags of goldfish for free, all kinds of Kellogg’s and General Mill’s cereal for $1/box, Kraft 8 oz shredded cheese for < $1, free Barilla protein pasta, $0.50/jar of Ragu spaghetti sauce. But I live in an area with a lot of grocery stores.

  19. juanita

Yep, NO more drug store price matches! That didn’t last long! I am actually not surprised by the change of not price matching produce. I price match produce quite a bit, actually more than anything else. I go ahead and price match at the register though because a couple of times, I have left it to their savings catcher system and it DID NOT CATCH my savings!

    • Sharon

I’ve had savings catcher miss a lot of savings. You can contact them but if they bother to respond they tell you you’re wrong. That’s my biggest gripe with savings catcher.

    • chrissy

I been noticing that walmart has stuff .01 cent lower then other stores just to be “lower” . No savings there!!!

  20. Dayna

You are still able to price match at the register to the drugstore sales. However, that’s what I loved about Savings Catcher was I didn’t have to hold up the checkout line with a cashier who does not want to price match (which happen to be all of them at our local Walmart). The cashiers at our local Walmart always huff & puff & act like you are trying to steal something every time we have attempted to price match. I just gave up asking.

I’ve saved around $12 with the Savings Catcher app since December. I knew something was up yesterday when I scanned a receipt & my total comparison stores went from 37 to 19.

  21. Melanie

I guess Savings Catcher was cutting into Walmart’s billions of profit. Their produce is expensive and poor quality, anyway.

  22. Lisa

I’ve saved $186. Those of you who don’t transfer your savings to Bluebird seriously need to…it DOUBLES your savings and it’s so simple.
I hate places like Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid…I prefer to do it all at Walmart. I’ll just start price matching with the ad for produce and drug store items…it doesn’t take much time at all at my Walmart.

    • Holly

How do you do this? I’ve never heard of bluebird

      • Sharon

You have to order a card. The doubling ends 2/28, though. It’s a very easy process. They mail you the card and you activate it. Plus last year it qualified for Small Business Saturday credits ($30 total).

        • Natasha

I have ordered my card, i know small business Saturday is in November but how did you get the $30 did thwy just add it?

          • Sharon

You have to register your card and then last year you got reimbursed for three $10 minimum purchases at small businesses. The credits took a few days.

      • shopper

Bluebird is a financial account through a partnership with American Express and Walmart. There’s a whole website with information. The doubling is an incentive to get this account and shop at Walmart.

    • meg

It’s great you saved that much. I just frankly think Walmart is a dirty store with poor produce. Dairy stuff is always expired too. I would rather pay a little extra to eat quality good. Just my opinion.

      • Erin

It really depends from store to store. I once lived near a super nice, clean store, but two moves since, and the Walmarts near me are kinda yucky. Just depends. There are nice ones out there . . . but they are like unicorns. 🙂

        • meg

I know what yr saying…we have 5…yes 5 walmarts very close together and each one is dirty. Just no exuse for a store to be dirty and grocery stuff outdated.

      • Heather

Just got back from WalMart…milk was $3.40/gallon. Went to Aldis, it was $1.49/gallon. I tend to buy all dairy and produce at Aldis-much more fresh and much less expensive. At least in my remote area….

        • meg

I love aldis!!! Great prices and quality is good!

        • L

Yeah in my small town, I get milk for $2.69 gal Gold discount at Rite Aid. It is next to a Shop N Save that sells the same brand 30 feet away from Rite Aid for $4.99!!

        • Caitlin

Must be nice to get milk that cheap! It’s nearly $5 a gallon here in Louisiana!

          • Candice M.

Oh crap, we are moving there in June. We go through a lot of milk, hoping there are Aldi stores there

  23. Amy

Price match your items before you cash out they honor any lower price if you can show it in a flyer bring an aldis flyer with you they almost always beat walmart prices

  24. Amanda

    That’s bull!

  25. Donna B

I hate Walmart. I can’t tell you how much I hate Walmart. Enough said.

    • Lily

LOL – preaching to the choir! 🙂

    • Angie

Same here. Not worth the headache!

    • Patrcia

I hate then too but I do enter my brothers reciepts and so far have only gotten 4 dollars back but guess that is better than nothing. Kroger and Target are still my number one stores.

  26. Chelsey

Kinda bummed that after this month you cant double your savings anymore, I hope they come back with it or decide to keep it longer. 🙁

  27. Pamela

Almost all of my savings have come from drugstore comparisons so this doesn’t surprise me at all.

    • Heather

      Yeppers me too!

  28. Kristen

In other words, this actually proved to work and that walmart doesn’t always have the lowest prices and now they are trying to stop it

  29. katie

    This program SUCKS

  30. Patrcia

I agree the program sucks. I still bring my flyer to the store and have them price match. Kroger is across the street and they wouldn’t price match it with saving star so I just take my flyer. They found out they are losing money so they are stopping it. Ha!

  31. L

That’s why I personally choose not to shop at Walmart. I prefer and save more money at two grocery stores that are unionized, and I still save money at drug stores. I have had my sister in law and a few friends be treated like a dog and being scheduled to show up to work one hour and then sent home. I’d rather they treat their employees better than save money. Plus my store always had outdated lunch meat and meat and milk.

    • tiffany

im sorry you walmart sucks =( it makes me sad to hear that and they need to get a new management team my store is not perfect but i love my job

      • L

I am glad you love your job and the store seems to value you and their employees Tiffany! 🙂 Unfortunately in my area that isn’t the case at the three stores. Its too bad all stores can’t have a good team.

  32. tiffany

ok so i am a cashier and i will let you know a bit about how savings catcher works. first off it you do comparison shopping you will not get much back if you price match major competitors like kroger and heb. second i always price match local stores because it will not work on those. third it does not do store brand to store brand. fourth if you know something is on sale somewhere and it does not catch it there is a contact tab please report the item and provide proof if you can they will usually give it to you. fifth i use my sale adds and purposely purchase items i use just to get the savings and my sixth and final thing is even if the bluebird card doent double anymore it is easier to use, it it is a pain in the butt(at least at my store) if you make us try to scan the code from your phone and it doent work we have to hand key in the info and wait for the manager to show up.

i dont mind price matching your stuff i price match myself but please try to be organized we are graded on how fast we scan items per hour most of the time i will believe you about a match unless its off the wall like $10 per pound steak for $2 i will check if it is right then we will move forward. I love my customers and will always try to save you money as long as it doesnt cost me my job =)

  33. mommyX4

At my store I cant price match any drug stores like walgreens ride aid or cvs they say because they dont have a membership card and those prices are with the membership cards:( it makes no sence with I had more stores near me but walmart is the closes most others are 30 miles away

  34. grace

I check the local grocer ads and purchase at walmart what i know is cheaper elsewhere. I get double back wirh bluebird. Takes a little work hut you can actually benifit with lots of savings. You have to sort of play the app though. Ive got 100 in bluebird.

  35. IQL

The new Savings Catcher policy is basically Targets’ ad match policy. Walmart’s ad match has NOT changed online therefore they still ad match produce and from stores that have cards such as Kroger and drugstores. If they change pm policy to match Targets –I’m not only going to the stores that have the lower prices (they are all close to me) but I will just start shopping at Target period.

  36. Judy Trac

    Sucks

  37. Emily

If u dont like wm, dont shop there. they have about the easiest pm policy. U dont have to go to customer svc like target. I dont buy everything there, like meat or produce, so im not going to complain about it. All of u not getting savings catcher $ r probably buying generics that have no match, so u r probably already getting a decent deal. Bluebird is an awesome option doubling $ back on savings catcher. And last time i checked, no other company had anything like savings catcher. If u want to offer constructive advice, thats great but it seems like a lot of people just like to complain and whine…ive got kids for that 😉

    • meg

Ummm.. no. Walmart is a dirty store with second rate produce….dairy items always expired. It’s great if u like it but the rest of us are entitled to our opinions too. It’s not whining….its an opinion. Maybe your store is wonderful but for many of us our stores are disgusting. Have a good evening.

      • jlgclassof2000

I hate when people criticize just cuz some of your conversations are about negative experiences with stores, products, etc. I personally appreciate any advice i can get when it comes to avoid bad experiences or bad products, & most of all – not wasting my money! Like I often tell my parents – really what ELSE would we talk about? Lol. And plus…who do they think I got it from? Theyve always been the 1s to never hesitate to complain & hold a grudge over 1 negative experience, so how dare they criticize. Its just conversation people, not really complaining unless u go on & on about it or act all dramatic like it seriously negatively impacts u personally.

      • Emily

If u read, i said everything isnt best @ wm i dont buy produce or meat there. I often go to target or my local iga. I dont like to c comments from people who hate wm and wont shop there. Its not helpful to those who do. I have never had expired items @ wm. I just prefer criticism that is productive or based on fact rather than fools saying wm is the root of all evil and the cause of obesity in the us. Some people r whining not all.

  38. Jeanne

Not going to be worth much with the changes they are making.

  39. Alice

So I live in a VERY rural area with only 1 small grocery store in town…..and with all the negative comments about Walmart……let me tell you how MUCH cheaper they are then grocery shopping at our teeny tiny store!!! It still takes me about 1/2 hour to drive to our closest Walmart…..which I will GLADLY do any day of the week so I don’t have to pay $5.00 for a gallon of milk or $3.00 for a boxed cake mix. Don’t get me wrong…..I am certainly not a walmart “advocate”….but the Walmart that I shop at must be 1 in a million because I have never had a problem with any cashiers not wanting to price match my items, accepting coupons and they are always very pleasant with me. GRANTED…..yes for some odd reason this Walmart has a VERY hard time keeping shelves stocked….and I wouldn’t buy my meat at it even if they were handing it out for free…..but I really can’t complain about them. I am just GRATEFUL that they are only 1/2 hour away and will price match grocery stores 60 miles away!! And yes……I do use savings catcher and have earned about $50.00 which I have doubled onto my bluebird card……but the thing I can’t understand is that they will price match grocery stores 60 miles away…..but when I scan my receipt it ONLY scans for 4 grocery stores?? Things that make you go hmmmmmm 🙂

  40. Mary

I looked at my savings over the last six months and over half of my savings came from drug store savings. I usually went to Walmart to purchase soda because I knew it was on sale somewhere else and could double my money. Walmart is my least favorite store and with this change after they no longer double the savings with Bluebird will shop there even less. I hate price matching at Walmart because the cashiers seem to always hassle you and request that you have the ad when it is not their policy to require the ad.

  41. Mary

They must of been loosing too much money otherwise they would not have changed the policy. I am with the others that Walmart is my least favorite store and will shop there less with the new change.

    • jlgclassof2000

I would not call it losing money…maybe no longer making a TON of money.

  42. April

I see a bad spiral here. They got couponers all excited about there policy: price matching even BOGO then did away with BOGO price match then brought on savings catcher which really is to THEIR benefit since the difference still gets spent at their store via gift card and now they are limiting their saving catcher. Geez so difficult to stay up on walmarts coupon policy it changes too often!

  43. Laura

Most of my savings found was on produce, so it figures that they eliminated that. I’m sure they looked at where they’ve had to credit back the most money and did away with those categories. The way they worded it is absolutely ridiculous though, to say that “we are removing some departments consisting mostly of items that do not have a like for like match at other retailers, such as produce and bakery items”. I’m sorry but you CAN compare apples to apples!

  44. Deann A

If it bothers you that much, don’t shop there.

  45. Cali

Does getting the BlueBird card effect your credit? TIA

  46. CJ

I signed up for bluebird right when it started & have probably gotten a free $100 through the doubling program. I’m usually there once/week & most of my receipts have amounted to anywhere from .50-$3 savings catcher credit. I have gotten lucky a few times & gotten $5-9. I price match some items (mostly produce, milk, bread) but haven’t had time for couponing the last year or two so I view any savings catcher money as just something extra I wouldn’t have otherwise gotten. It definitely doesn’t take the place of price matching & I will be very sad to see the bluebird doubling program end. I wouldn’t shop there just for savings catcher but if I’m shopping there anyway why not take the few seconds to scan my receipt & take anything they give me back?

  47. Em

I’m bummed because I mostly got my savings back from produce! I liked being able to get everything I need at the lowest prices even when I didn’t have time to check price matches before running to the store. 🙁

  48. Brooke

Do bluebird card charge you fee?

  49. Kim

I am trying to redeem my Walmart Bucks online and it doesn’t apply them. Tried adding it as a Mastercard since it’s a MC product, but no. Anybody redeemed online?

  50. candise newton

My reward dollars were redeemed but not by me! I have no idea what happened. Ive been adding them up for months I’m so disappointed and no help from Walmart im done with this app if its that easy to loose your money!
