Target Closing 13 Stores

Did you hear the news? Target plans to close 13 stores nationwide. From what I gather, this may be partly due to the massive credit-card breach before Christmas 2013. Click here to read more. I am definitely VERY surprised as Target has become my go-to store for the best deals. What are your thoughts?

Here’s the list of Target stores slated for closure:

Anderson, Indiana
Austin North East in Austin, Texas
Casa Grande, Arizona
Columbus Southwest in Columbus, Ohio
Dixie Highway in Louisville, Kentucky
East Flint in Flint, Michigan
Suncoast Pasco Co. in Odessa, Florida
New Ulm, Minnesota
Northridge in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Ottumwa, Iowa
Superior, Wisconsin
Springfield, Ohio
Victorville, California

(Thanks for the heads up on this, Lena & Donna!)

I love Target! Best store for couponing and great deals. Good thing I have 3 stores nearby and none of them are closing for now 😉

  2. Jen M

ARE YOU TRYING TO HURT ME?? Thank you baby Jesus my locations are not in that list!!

    • Cassandra

Lol! I was going to ask this same question. I would be lost without target.

    • Kay

I feel the same way Jen M. Neither of my closest locations are on the list. Idk what I would do with myself if they were.

    • Laura

      LOL!!

      I’m with you!!

I’d be lost without you Target! I’m there almost daily

  3. Jessica

I’m shocked! I’ll have to see what I can find online as to why. We just moved to Alaska and amazon and target are becoming my best friend for shopping.

  4. Ryan

Yay none near me! At least one that’s further than the 4 I live close by.

  5. Maja

Luckily not here in Vancouver WA or Portland OR. I simply love Target and I’ll cry if any store close here. Hate when people lose jobs 🙁

    • Meredith

      Hi I’m in Vancouver too.👋😊

      • Maja

        Hello 🙂

  6. julie c

My closest store is closing. 🙁

    • JA

I’m so sorry for you loss.

  7. Anna

They are apparently low performing stores. I used to live in Superior WI. The store is not a “p fresh” (ie the grocery section that’s big but not a full super) and it’s not a Super Target. Clothes are taxed in WI but not in MN which is literally across a bridge (over Lake Superior but still not far). New Ulm MN is a very small town.

    • Rae

I was going to say of those towns I have lived in or been near it doesn’t surprise me. Also not mentioned is how many stores have opened in the last 6mo or so. I really don’t think that security breech hurt them that badly, if at all.

      • Ashely

It actually did hurt them. I work at a target store they were evaluating to close- thankfully they decided not to close mine. Their losing lots of money just trying to please their guests…. Not sure how much longer my store will continue to stay afloat with their new policies their pushing…

        • Candace Parker

I am curious from an insider’s point of view, other than the year of credit monitoring, what have they been doing to try to please the guests? I have only been a regular Target shopper the past two years, I haven’t really noticed any changes in my local store. I was just curious about your experiences. It’s always good to hear from someone on the inside what is going on, so others can have a better understanding. Thank you!

    • P

I honestly didn’t even know there was a target in superior. I live in Duluth.

      • Amy

        Me either?!

    • J

Are most targets with full groceries? I live in the suburbs of a major city with about 10 targets within 15 miles and none of them have a full grocery …

      • Kim

Yes! I live in a metroplex and dozens of the stores I have been to have full grocery sections. Only 2-3 I have seen have less grocery than super Walmart or Kroger. Even when we lived in Georgia only one or of a dozen did not have full grocery. Also worth mentioning it could’ve age of store, the ones without full grocery are very old stores.

      • Sarah

A new one was just built close to my town and it’s not a full grocery one.

      • Sarah

Most of my Targets (Nashville, TN area) have a fresh grocery with a medium sized grocery section including some frozen and refrigerated goods and minimal produce. There is one Super Target about 20 miles away from downtown that has a full grocery including a deli and a bakery.

      • Sheila T (@sstsau)

Well, none in my area have full groceries (unfortunately). I live in Northern CA now. When I used to live in the Midwest, we had plenty of Super Targets and Super Walmarts. But there are no Super Targets anywhere near me in CA. It’s also frustrating because their inventory seems much more limited here than back in the Midwest, so plenty of “deal” items listed here on Hip2Save aren’t even available in the stores around me.

    • BusyMom

The superior target is awful. Small, dirty, not updated with terrible management. Not surprised.

    • Stephanie

I live in ohio and some of our targets have small grocery sections. Not huge like a real grocery. I have lived in and frequently visit both Cincinnati and Columbus, both are big areas. Years ago, 10 maybe, I went to a target outside of D.C. and it was enormous with a full grocery. I wish we had that. So many times I have left target and had to stop by the grocery on the way home.pr

  8. Elysia

I lived right down the street from the Target on Dixie Hwy for years. I totally understand why. There is a FAR nicer Target about 15 minutes away in Okolona.

  9. Elaine

I just got a new one. No more trekking across town for me!

  10. sf

Not good. But thankfully my locations aren’t closing. Not sure what I would do if they closed on my area.

  11. Kate

I’m not surprised. Down her in FL, especially up North, there are a lot of Targets within 10 minutes of each other, and these are regular stores that are “super” Targets compared to our regular Miami stores. I’m always surprised at the many locations Target has within a close proximity, especially in Orlando/Tampa. Though most of the stores closing seem to be in less populated areas. I’m glad ours is not one, I could not live without Target!!

  12. Jennifer

I dont even have a target in my area 👎😢

    • Susie

Me too.. The closest Target to my house is 60 miles away.

    • Angela

Me neither. The closest one is about 2 1/2 hours away. Only options I really have is Walmart and the dollar stores. Other than groceries most of my shopping is online.

    • Stacy Leigh

I don’t have a Target in my area either. I always see all the deals posted here and wish that we had one.

    • Crystal

2 hours away for me too.

  13. aria

I love near Anderson, IN..it’s a depressed area and we are over run by Target’s out here!

    • Jamie

Thats my area. Hi fellow hoosier 😉

      • Jennifer

Not my area, but another fellow Hoosier here. Just wanted to say hey! 🙂

  14. Carrie

I was a little panicked until I checked the list.

  15. Danielle

My closest target is an hour away. Luckily its safe!

  16. Ann

I love how fast they move their merchandise. I always find something great on sale. Lucky my Target is doing well and not closing. Also, I wish they would bring back the crazy Target lady Christmas commercials-they are the best!

    • Mel

Oh Ann, I LOVED those commercials. Every single one of them made me laugh. Let’s start a petition to get those going again.

      • Ann

I’m all for it! They make the holidays great, I agree I laugh every time I see them.

  17. jwade03

My Target shopping trips have become fewer and fewer. I found that every time I went to shop at my closest store with coupons, there was always a price discrepancy or some issue with a coupon or a cashier not really understanding how their coupon policy works. I have spent way too much time frustrated and at the customer service desk having issues fixed. I also have done some of the in store pickups and been met by customer service employees who obviously were annoyed at the idea of picking items off the shelves for customers. They made me feel like I had totally inconvenienced them! My couple of negative interactions has turned me off to that concept.

    • alison

I’ve had bad luck with their customer service online. Last year I gave them another chance when they were offering free shipping. I bought Oxiclean (which I’ve purchased from Amazon before – no problems) and it arrived damaged. I picked up the shipping box and Oxiclean started to fall out. I lost about 1/3 of the product. They wouldn’t refund, and told me they couldn’t ship me a new box at the sale price they were offering when I made the original purchase. So my only recourse was to go to Target (duh, if I wanted to go to Target I would have gone there in the first place) with a leaking box of Oxiclean to return the box for a refund – but not for an exchange.

  18. rachel

It is no surprise that the Northridge location in Milwaukee, Wis. is slated for closure. Terrible location and the store has appeared on the verge of closing for years.

  19. Guest2

I have a Super Walmart practically within walking distance of my house, so I never go to Target.

  20. Katie

The Target at Northridge in Milwaukee, WI is probably closing because over the past several years that area has really deteriorated. Northridge Mall was less than 1 mile from Target and that closed 15 ++ years ago. So sad, because that was one of my Target’s I used to go to as a child.

  21. Ivan

Highly doubt this has anything to do with the credit card breach and everything to do with low sales.

    • Viggie

But that is related. 60% of my family has moved their business to Walmart, Acme, etc due to credit card breach. They don’t trust Target at all so their sales must be suffering. I don’t trust them either but Cartwheel, manuf AND Target coupons? I can’t walk away from that. I just use cash always.

      • alison

I don’t shop at Target nearly as often as I did before the data breach. In my area the prices aren’t that competitive anymore and because I shop there less and less Cartwheel is hard to manage because I have a very limited amount of deals that I can add. And yes, my card was part of the breach. It still smarts!

        • thehenrydthoreau

I, too, moved a lot of my business away from this company after the breach. It was a blessing in disguise. I turned to a more natural, simplistic lifestyle. I go in my PAYG phone cards, hair spray and triple stacked deals for charity — paid in cash.

  22. Candy72

The Victorville store is a few miles from me, but we have 4 other target stores in the area.

  23. deb

    WHEW!!!!!!!! Madison, WI

    • Alyssa

      Same here Deb! Go Madtown!

      • Ginger

        Yeah Madison!!

  24. Kim

We have 2 Targets in our area, Flint and East Flint. The East Flint store is closing and I’m really bummed about that. Of the 2 that was my favorite location.

    • Julie L

We’re neighbors! Thank goodness for Miller Road. And my personal fav, the Target in Fenton ☺️

  25. Nl

This post nearly gave me a panic attack! Lol. We already lost jcp. I would CRY!

  26. Jill

Yes..I am being affected by this HORRIBLE news!! I am in Ottumwa Iowa and the closest Target for me will now be 80 miles away!!!! Everyone here locally was sooooo surprised!! Our Target has been here since 1972…I think our town will no longer be the same. I can barely stand to talk about this topic. Thank you hip2save for all of the deals as always!!!:)))

    • Carrie

I’m in Sioux city, I can’t imagine losing my target. It’s not fair for you guys!!! 🙁

  27. Michelle

I don’t think rope or chains would work very well, so I’d probably have to use superglue to attach myself to one of those big red balls storefront if they tried to close my Target.

    • Nicole Z.

      LOL!

  28. Jaci

Glad there are no more locations in Il. Im not surprised they are still recovering from the breach in 2013. I worked at a bank when all that happened and still to this day i have not reopened my debit with them. I know it can happen anywhere anytime i still just cant do it. I have enjoyed all there new marketing ideas cartwheel ect. I just dont like how you are treated sometimes when they know you dont have debit/credit with them.

  29. Kristine

They already closed one target about a year ago over here in Florida 😩 hopefully they don’t close the last target near my home

  30. Angela

One of the stores closed in my city, it was an original store. There are so many new Super Targets that had opened and that unfortunately facilitated in the closing of this one.

  31. Tina

Yes the one closing in Columbus is in an “undesirable” neighbor. I think these are just the struggling stores closing

  32. eyez1998

I was praying hard and barely breathing reading the list. Glad mine isn’t closing but sad they will close other locations

  33. Molly

    New Ulm, MN

  34. Rosa Poulos

I would die if it was MY Target! I’m addicted, he is my therapy.

  35. Sarah

Thank goodness mine isn’t on that list. That is the only store I enjoy shopping at!!

  36. MD

Oh no! The store in Austin is my usual store, it is a Super Target and has awesome clearance deals throughout the year 😔

    • Evan

Which location is this? I thought it was Capital Plaza. Is that not correct?

      • Maria

Is the one at I-35 & Parmer Ln. ? 🙁

        • MD

It is the one on I 35 and parmer 😣 I just checked the target website and that is the North East Austin store, now I will have to go to the one & pflugerville. Do you shop at this target as well?

          • Christina

No no no no NOooooo! Austin SuperTarget is my store! I live out padt Elgin. 🙁
Where are the other SuperTargets? Most are the old small stores.

  37. Dawn W. G.

I don’t know what is happening to our town Springfield, Ohio. We are losing our only Target. We recently lost Macy’s, KMart, and JC Penney. All that is left is Meijer, Sears, Kohls, Marshalls, and Walmart ( 2 walmarts )

    • lori b

Im in springfield also. Our teachers at school are all in mourning. We are so upset. Walmart isn’t a great place here and like you said, everything is closing. We’ll have to drive to Huber or Fairfield .Seems like restaurants are doing well.

  38. Sophie

So sad to see Northridge in Milwaukee is on the list. The area is going downhill but that Target has the best clearance. Their clearance always makes it to 70% before it gets bought. They always have tons of seasonal clearance, was there today and lots of Halloween stuff left (can’t wait for 90%). And the employees are always very nice. Will miss that store for sure!

  39. Jessica

Mine is closing in Superior, WI 🙁 so sad

  40. floridagld

Rarely shop there even though it is walking distance for me..just never got in to it or Amazon either..lol so no effect..I do find it sad for them because of the huge pay out they gave..again it didn’t effect me.

  41. Ali

I think this is the responsible move by closing down low performance stores to keep their profits up. This prevents them having to shut down tons of stores all at once like they did in Canada or what Kmart has been having to do.

  42. Chick106

I read a news article about how Target had opened a hundred and some stores in Canada back in 2013. But for some reason were not able to get their merchandise on the shelves very well. So people stopped trying to shop there because their shelves were empty! In January of this year, they decided to pull the plug and close up shop in Canada all together! I imagine that whole ordeal has started the beginning of the end!!

  43. Sarah

Don’t forget about the Canadian Target disaster. Combine that with the credit fraud and you have a company that is hurting.

  44. Jenn

I used to live by the Suncoast Target listed in Florida and it was the BEST Target I’ve ever been to! It’s a new beautiful Super Target. The one I live by now is pathetic in comparison!

    • anna w

I love this target too! I’m so sad they are closing!

  45. Hilary Hollister

The one closest to me already closed. It was a brand new store, but not in the best area. Building remains empty. So sad.

  46. Kim

I rarely go to Target. For some reason, my store doesn’t carry most of the deal items from this site. I have gone so many times with coupons & cartwheel in hand only to be told, “our location doesn’t carry that product”. So, I stopped going.

  47. Cassidy

Just an FYI…a few years ago the store in Colorado Springs by us closed and the week they closed they had everything that they didn’t want to move to a new store for 70-90% off. I bought make up, kid clothes, boots, maternity clothes, etc. It had tons of great deals. So if you do have one closing by you I would find out their sale schedule for the close.

  48. Jen

I live in PA on the NY/PA border. It’s so disappointing going into target to get the deals posted because the prices are so overinflated in NY. I wish they would have the Same prices for sales items (ex: instead of soda 4/$10, it’s 4/$12). And I’m not in NYC or anywhere around. The Horsehead location is the culprit. I’m glad to hear most people have a favorable response…. I wish I had the same enthusiasm about Target. 😞

    • Amber l.

Jen, we have family in Knoxville and when we come to visit from lower PA we make sure we stop at another target on the way up. We went to the target in Horsehead once, and you’re right, very high prices. But we find most things in NY are. 🙁

  49. Tiara

My heart skipped a beat when i saw iowa. So happy its not our local one but sad for Ottumwa that doesn’t have much around it.

  50. Krystle

Yes, I’m losing my Target in Louisville. it will be a very sad day when it closes Jan 30. 🙁 I hate it.
