    anyone know how this works?

    • Kristina

Like any other set top box, it comes with the box and a remote and you hook it into your tv and run apps off of it like Netflix Hulu and Amazon prime. You can also mirror an iOS device on it via AirPlay.

      • Evan

Not Amazon though. They want people to buy their Fire TV.

        • Kristina

Oh wow I did not know that. My Roku has an Amazon channel, I just can’t mirror my iPhone.

      • Bekah

You can fling Amazon from your phone to the Apple TV though. That’s what we do 🙂

    • Rae

I have had this for 3 years and love it. I did have to use the warrantee right at one year though. It uses the wifi to have all you internet channels in one place. I don’t know if this is a good comparison but some people use their PlayStation to do the same. HTH.

It’s basically a streaming box that connects to the Internet as well as your iTunes. You can watch shows from Hulu, Netflix, etc if you are subscribed, or YouTube for free. You can also listen to your iTunes music and watch any shows & movies you’ve bought. I had this version for two years and loved it (I don’t have cable so it was used daily). I recently upgraded to the latest version but still highly recommend this one!

  2. Amy

My question too, as a non-tech. What IS this and do you buy a service plan with it or what?

    • Rae

You don’t need a plan with it, but you have to pay for your subscriptions like Netflix or ESPN. But if you already subscribe to them then you do not need to have an additional subscription. You just sign on.

Any reviews on the ability to stream live sports? I saw it’s an add on. We have a wii that streams Netflix and we have cable. I’d love to cut cable but the husband wants his sports. Is this a good option for us?

    • Michelle W

I believe Sling TV allows this. It is $20 a month as well.

    • Just Me

Ask a family member who has cable to give you access to their account to get espn.
We don’t have cable but my husband can watch espn on the xbox

    • Laura

If want want live sports, there’s a delay. We have the MLB subscription. You can’t watch your “home” team live. For us, it’s the Detroit Tigers. We have to wait 1 hour after the game is done. I’m not sure how the football works. So if he’s a die hard, this may not be the answer.
Getting the “code” to someone’s cable account isn’t always the answer either. We do this with my Mom’s account. But it doesn’t give you much. Nothing live.

  4. Michelle W

We cut the cable cord a few years ago. Evan with a Smart TV, the apps don’t run fast or it didn’t have the apps we needed. The Apple TV box allows a faster easier way to watch Netflix, Hulu and other apps. It is a one time fee for the box. It is up to you if you want to buy subscriptions to Netflix etc. hope this helps.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for your feedback Michelle! Super helpful!

  5. Laura

Does anyone know if this is the most current Apple TV? Is this the Apple 2?

    • Melissa

If you click on the Target link it will also show another Apple TV, one more expensive for $149. It states that the release date on that model is September 2015.

    • Mona

This is the old generation. I think it’s marked down due to the newer replacement that just came out.

    • Jenye

The apple 2 would be extremely hard to find considering it’s the last to be able to be jail broken. 🙂

    • Keri

This is the one I have, they just released the newest version that is 150 for 32gig or 199 for 64gig. We have this in 2 rooms of our house, and cut the cord to cable. I pay 7.99 a month for Netflix, watch all my movies through iTunes and Vudu, and I also have a smart tv that has Amazon app on it. The only thing we don’t get is sports, but I know you can pay for that service. Still beats the 160 a month bill for cable. Now it’s $99 a year for Amazon and $8 a month for Netflix.

  6. Amy

So, if you have a blue-ray player for netflix, hulu, etc—-how is this any different?

    • Jenye

If you have apple products and use iTunes, or have bought moves from iTunes is really the main difference.

    • Keri

You can use it to play anything on your iTunes home library, movies, music, pictures etc.

  7. Bri

I absolutely love our Apple TV. I thought about buying another one to have in our master bedroom. We have a smart tv which streams Netflix and the apps that the Apple TV provides, but we are apple users (phones, computers) so it awesome when it comes to streaming music and sharing pics, especially during holiday’s when family is over. No need to hover over one phone or one computer. You can play it on the tv for everyone to see. Also, I like to use it for my workouts. I have them all saved on my Pinterest boards on my phone and I can easily access them that way and play them right on my tv. I paid $99 for my Apple TV. Totally worth it then!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh awesome! Thanks for your review Bri!

  8. Steph

Maybe this has been asked and answered and I’m just not understanding. We have a smart TV and can do Netflix and Hulu etc. on it. But it does stream slow sometimes. Will this do anything my Smart TV won’t? Will it make it stream faster? Thanks in advance

  9. Victoria

This is like your smart tv except it has many more channels and you have the option (the best) to mirror things from your iPad or iPhone onto your tv. I love this option and will do apps from my phone to show the kids on our huge tv downstairs. This is the older model, which if your new to streaming tv apps, would be a good starter. I watch HBO on the Apple TV also and it is amazingly fast.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Sweet! Thanks for sharing Victoria!

  10. Amanda

What’s the difference between this one and the new one?

    • Laura

The new one has the tvios (app store) many more apps(channels) plus you can talk to siri and ask for a show. She’ll tell you where it is ie netflix or hulu etc. Plus a faster processor. I have 2 of the newer ones, picking this one up for our lower level

  11. Rosi

May no longer be available. I try to add it and it says the max has been reached, but there isn’t anything in my cart. I’ll keep trying.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I am now seeing only ship to store available.

  12. Tia

I need one of you ladies to come to my house and set everything up! I used to think I was tech-savvy, but not so much anymore 🙁

    • Keri

This is really just a plug and play. You just need to have your wireless passwords etc and your iTunes login info and you are good Togo.

  13. Rosi

Nvm the link from the target home page worked. But the offer is still available for pickup from your store. Seems that shipping to home isn’t. Just got mine! $19.84 discount with red card savings…Walmart has this for $64.99 so this is a great deal.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Great score Rosi!

      • Keri

I bought a new one FYI 3 days ago from bestbuy for 54.99. It isn’t labeled as that online or in store but it rang up that price. Worth checking.

  14. Prabh

It’s says your cart is already reached full

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

It appears, only ship to store is available. Are you able to grab it that way?

  15. Laura

We just cut the cord! Bought 2 newer Apple TV 4 last week, Picking this one up for the lower level. Awesome deal!

  16. Cheryl

I have said for the past 3 years that this was the best $99 we have ever spent. Now, even though there is a newer model available, it is a GREAT price! I am buying another one for the master bedroom!

  17. Prabh

    It’s back again for order.ordered one.Thanks

  18. tara

Hello, I am not so tech-savy and do not have a smart tv or at least I do not think i do-lol? I get it will stream in netflixs etc but how about cable tv channels and programs? TIA for your guidance!

    • Prabh

sling is good option for cable substitute with no worry of long contracts cancel it when ever you want.just download the sling app on this and buy monthly subscription.

  19. Jessica

If anyone is having problems, I went into the store (I am trying to pay cash for everything) to prove match and buy. They price matched it with no problem and even applied the 10% off Cartwheel!

  20. Lorna

I brought mine when the price finally went down to $60. One of my fave items I brought this year since i downgraded my cable to basic. I use it for Netflix, Hulu, and any shows I missed on ABC and Lifetime networks 🙂

  21. RNWOLFPACK

I was just able to order this online (10:16pm EST) to be shipped to my house. I went through Ebates and got 1.5% cash back as well as the 25% off today only deal and 5% off by using my Red card!! Yay!!
