Free music, anyone? Check out this email from Hip2Save reader, Gail…

There is a website called freegalmusic.com. This site works in conjunction with your local library, so if your library participates and you have a library card, you can use your library login information to access this site. Once on the site, you are allowed to download 5 songs for free every week. I download mine into my Google Play account. The site offers a huge variety of music, but prominently displayed at the moment is Adele’s new 25 album, which can be downloaded for free. The only catch is that one must have patience, because you can only download 5 songs from the album per week. So since the Adele album has 11 songs, it will take you 3 weeks to download. The site will send you an email once per week to remind you that you have downloads available. I’ve been downloading albums for free all summer long.

Haven’t heard if this…eager to try. Wondering if you could actually get the whole album this week…my daughter, husband and I all have library cards. If we get itunes and download under same Apple ID???

    • Michelle W

Yes. I downloaded some songs to a folder on my PC. You can upload them to your iTunes account without a problem.

  3. Vick

That is so cool. I hope my library participates. Thanks you!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome!

  4. Amy

Another thing you can do is see if other cities/counties offer a card for those in neighboring counties. I get an extra set of songs a week using the card from the neighboring county.

  5. Megan M

I use this through my library. You can download 3 songs a week. There are limited artists. I believe Sony artists
. It’s a nice way to build your library albeit slowly.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh cool! Thanks for sharing Megan!

  6. Kim

How do you download to google play? Can I download to iTunes?

  7. tk

Thank you! would never have known, and my library does participate!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome!

I have been using Freegal for years and use it often (when I remember). The search function isn’t that great, but it has improved over time. Any pop song that is hot right now tends to be on there, but other genres aren’t as prevalent. There are lots of karaoke versions of songs that are a decent substitute if you are looking for a particular song. In searching, less info is better than more. I’m not sure why…For example, sometimes searching “Beautiful Christina Aguilera” doesn’t work but searching for Christina Aguilera might. Our library upped our downloads to five per week. However, if I’m really wanting more, my hubby has his own card so we could technically get 10 songs if we wanted. They also allow you to download music videos, but they are worth 2 downloads (I think). So you can’t download as many videos each week as MP3. Hope that’s helpful. Enjoy!!

      Hi Amy,
I just signed up and am having trouble accessing the songs I downloaded using the app. They are listed under My Music but I do not have the option to play them. Any suggestions? Thanks! 🙂

      • Amy

        Hi Roxanne,

I don’t have much feedback about the app other than when I tried it (probably 3 years ago), the songs didn’t end up on my account on the Internet. So basically I couldn’t access them on my computer to put them in my iTunes library. I can’t remember having an issue with playing them once I got them downloaded on my phone. Then again, it was a long time ago. Good luck! Hope you can get it to work!

        • SL

Amy, I have the app too. If you download the music on your phone, it doesn’t download to your computer, but it will show up in your Downloads link on the left. You can go in there up to a few weeks later and download it to your computer without it counting against your songs for that week.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for such helpful feedback Amy!

    Hi there!

I’ve been using it for ages. And I use three library cards that my family has. On mine, you download the MP3 files and then can import them into iTunes or Google Play for transfer to a mobile device. Works great. Selection is limited and the search feature is pretty weak. You have to be pretty specific when searching in order to actually find what you want.

It used to only be three downloads a week and they recently upped it to five so that’s so nice!

    Hope this helps.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

  10. Angela

Cincinnati Public Library offers 7 songs per week… 🙂

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Sweet!

  11. Anon

How can I get my library to sign up?

  12. Becky

AWESOME! Thanks for sharing! My dtr. ALWAYS wants me to pay for itunes and mostly I refuse! Maybe this way she can get free music! 🙂

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      YW!

  13. Alex

I don’t see the United States on the list when searching up my library. Bummer!

    • Jessica

When you enter in your location, leave the country space blank! I had this same issue :p

    • Heather

Don’t put anything for country! Mine worked by only entering state.

  14. Michelle W

I’m so excited about this. I have been working out more and want new music to listen to. Thank you!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You are so welcome!

  15. dealzgurl

Awesome for those whose libraries participate…Mine doesn’t. )-:

  16. Victoria

We’ve used this for years. If your library offers it, the link will usually appear on your library’s website. We have 5 library cards in our house and our oldest son takes full advantage of being able to get 5 free songs a week per card!! It can be tricky using the search engine though, and you also have to watch the versions of songs (not all are by the original artist) For instance, I asked for Shut Up & Dance for our 2 year old and he downloaded an acoustic version that our 2 year old could tell was not sung by Walk the Moon. But overall a nice perk for being a library cardholder. We download ours onto a flash drive and then take it in the car.

  17. Lisa

Enter in your zip code. That pulls up the area libraries that participate.
I too, am wondering how I get it to my google play account.
    Thank you for sharing!

  18. Leo

Montclair, NJ offers 5. Adele has 3 or 4 good songs in that album;Just my opinion…Love hello and its free.

  19. Kristina

Neat! I wish my library participated. I will suggest it next time I’m there.

  20. Lynn

I’m in AZ and the freegal only has the 30 second demo version of each song on Adele’s new album, with the exception of Hello. The whole version of hello is available to download. Anyone else experiencing this same thing?

    • Kara

I’m in AZ and the only song is Hello 🙁

    • Michelle W

I’m also in AZ and after I download the song (Water under the Bridge) it is the full song. Listening it on the site only gives you a 30 second demo like iTunes does. At least, that is what happened for me.

      • Kara

Are you searching under song or album?
I’ve tried all searches and it only shows Hello.
        Thanks.
        I’m using the freegal app.

        • Michelle W

Oh, that might be why. I am on their website.

  21. Laurel

I love Freegal!! I download all the time! In San Antonio, the weekly limit is 5. I’ve already downloaded Adele’s 25. Also love Pentatonix!

There’s also lots and lots of Kidz Bop.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Sweet! Thanks for your review!

  22. Kristi Winkelmann

Thanks!! Got signed…super easy and already downloaded my first 5 songs. Love it!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Awesome!

  23. Bethany

Gotta go join the library in the next county over!

  24. David Matula

Search function is lousy, but this is a great way to get new music and to discover obscure music. You can’t sample all of the music on the site, though. If a song can’t be sampled, you can still download it.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Thanks for your feedback David!

  25. Laura

I love freegal! I use it all of the time. When my 10 year old asked for music I had him get his own library card so he can get free music too! Yay for freegal!

  26. mary

new to me – and this is the REASON I come to hip2save – because you all rock1

  27. Hunterwoody

How do I get the songs off my app and into my iPhone?

    • Michelle W

I downloaded from their website. After logging on, your account should show the downloads you have. You can download them to your computer and then upload them to your iTunes account etc

    • Missy

The only way I gave found is download on computer and on mac goes into iTunes. On free gal get 3 downloads for each song so I download on phone and then to computer.

  28. Pam S.

    Yay! Free Adele! Thank you:)

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You are so welcome Pam!

  29. Danielle

Thank you! Super easy set up and already downloaded my 5 songs!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Woohoo! YW!

  30. Krystal

wow! what a great site! i found an old Christmas album that my family used to listen to when i was little, brought back such great memories, and just listened to it with my little girl. Thank you so much.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh how sweet! So glad you can now enjoy that same music with your daughter. You are very welcome 😉

  31. rxxxxxe

Wow! I’ll have to check freegal out! Thanks!
And just to let you know – Adele’s song Hello is free on Amazon Prime.
For those with teens and tweens One Direction’s new album is free on Amazon Prime. Not sure how that’s possible since it looks like it just came out, but the whole thing is free.

    • rxxxxxe

I just want to clarify it’s free on Amazon Prime MUSIC. Where you stream it. You don’t get a physical cd for free, but you can stream it in your Amazon Prime Music library for free.

  32. peachie

My library used to participate but no longer does. I really miss it.

  33. Jen

Mine appears to only allow 3 per week. Anyone else? Still really cool. though. Thanks! Didn’t know about this!

  34. Tania

The library has only the first 30’seconds of Adele’s songs, so look carefully at the downloads, some are complete versions , some are not.
