What a FANTASTIC post…. Thank you & Merry Christmas!

    • Heather C

PS- i’m going to suggest that my kids GIVE me a homemade coupon book, that way they can spend what little they have on other people. I’m going to give them some ideas, and hopefully they’ll come up with others 😊 (and it’s a fantastic way to show children that you don’t have to spend money to be thoughtful and in the holiday spirit!)

      • Stephanie

I always use the free photo books from shutterfly and make recipe books! That way I dont have a huge stack of papers and the quality is great. I have seperate ones for chicken, beef, desserts etc and then I also have family favorites volume 1 volume 2 etc πŸ™‚ Just an idea

        • Sandy

Great idea! Sometimes I have so many codes I don’t know what to do with them.

        • Heather C

Yes, that’s a fantastic idea… Especially for the children I foster who “age out,” and are going out into the big scary world of adulthood. What a way to make memories, too!

        • Tami

What a great idea! I will have to keep that in mind.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

You are so welcome! Merry Christmas! πŸ˜€

Anyone have info about #4-savings bond? I have read that they really aren’t a good investment and value could actually go down because of inflation?? Is there something better? I would like to set something up for my newborn, but am at a loss. Thanks for any information.

    • Cat

Remember, any money you put away is better than nothing! We always liked bonds when the kids were little because you can’t easily “touch” it, and there is plenty of time to a rye interest. Bonds will always be worth their original purchase price at a minimum–the interest rates are what varies, so then the maturity date does too. So, you purchase a series EE for $25, it’s printed $50 on the face– which is what it matures to eventually. You will eventually get there, it just takes time. Series I are purchased at the face price (so $50 buys you a $50 bond) but the interest rate tends to be higher. You can look at all of it online if you search US Savings bonds–just be sure you are at a .gov site. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for responding!!!

      529 college plan!

      • AG

Completely agree about 529 plan. My uncle is a broker and he highly recommended we set up one for each of our boys. πŸ™‚ We did, and they are now well on their way to having a substantial amount when they graduate and go to college.

    • Andrea

We started buying silver for our son.

    • Daine

      Jackie,
I just checked the US Treasury site. Any EE series bond purchased now would only earn %1 for the LIFE of the bond. Sadly this would be terrible investment for your baby. Bond interest rates are set twice a year so they might be a good option in future years. I have 2 grandchildren 1 and 3. I have been sending our daughter money to put into a 529. Not all 529’s are the same so do some research. We felt it was best to give the money to the parents instead of starting our own 529 because of the way colleges count the distribution as the student’s income instead of part of the family’s contribution. A much higher percentage of the student’s income is included when figuring out how much need based money a student receives. The only way for grandparents not to impact need based aid is to not give any 529 money until the student’s senior year. Since tax laws can change yearly you will have to continue to research this topic until your children are through college.

Good neighbors don’t give neighbors wind chimes — EVER!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      πŸ˜‰

    • Liz Ob

So agree! Don’t like to hear those all day and night when it’s windy! πŸ™‰

    • Kathy

I love to listen to wind chimes!

  4. Jess

I love the fruit basket idea!! Thank you

  5. tracee2

Stephanie-would you explain how you make the recipe books. I really need to organize my recipes and this sounds like a great idea.
    Thank you

  6. Sarah

I love the idea of a zoo or aquarium pass for my child he has too many toys a lot of them don’t even get played with much that would be an awesome gift!!

  7. Sandra

These are great ideas! Thank you Collin! Merry Christmas!

  8. Olivia

We are giving my husband’s brother and sister Amazon prime for Christmas! What’s nice is if they already have prime or if they decide they don’t want it (which why wouldn’t you want it?!?) you can turn it into an Amazon gift card. If they choose the prime membership, it starts whenever they activate it if I’m not mistaken. It doesn’t start when you purchase the gift.

  9. Polly

That’s it! I’m giving nail polish and accessories to my brother!! πŸ˜‰

    • Uma @ Centsible Indian

      Polly, lol! πŸ™‚

  10. Nel

Beef jerky is always well received by our bus driver.
