SIX Reasons Hip2Savers LOVE Costco

Considering a Costco Membership? Below are just some reasons Hip2Savers LOVE Costco (and you  likely will too!):

* Costco has a lot of perks! For example – Budget car rental. We rent a van to drive to Florida from Illinois every summer. My husband and dad drive so to add an additional driver is $14 a day. With the Costco membership, they waive that fee. Plus you save an additional 13% off the daily rate. When all is done, we end up saving over $200 which more than pays for our membership!

* Paying $50 for access to big deals and amazing customer service is hugely economical in the long run. I don’t buy everything at Costco (sometimes it’s better to buy in smaller quantities elsewhere, depending on the item), but overall, our membership serves us very well. We have also used Costco for travel, glasses/contacts, prescription drugs, photo, and tire services. They’re smart to treat their customers well… because clearly, when they do, people are incredibly loyal and both the company AND the individual benefit!

* I love shopping at Costco and know that the savings I get more than cover the annual fee. Here are some other benefits of shopping at Costco to appreciate: free samples, exercise while walking around the huge store, and cheap “dates” with your spouse.

* The best thing about Costco is they have an AMAZING liquor store with prices that are unbeatable. You don’t even need a membership to shop there! The one I frequent has samplings pretty much every weekend and super awesome gift sets for excellent prices. I bought a large bottle of Grey Goose vodka for under $20 bucks. I still have the membership and I save probably hundreds just in the baking aisle alone. And when I am out and about, I go in and get the frozen yogurt as a snack. Super tasty and a quick, inexpensive treat.

Costco Starbucks Branded Coffee

* My husband and I are HUGE Starbucks Coffee Drinkers and we often buy the 12 ounce bags of Starbucks Espresso Beans at Starbucks for $12.95 per bag – yes, not hip! Anyways, we were telling some friends about this and they mentioned that the Kirkland brand of Espresso Beans at Costco are actually ROASTED BY STARBUCKS! I had no idea this was the case even though it says that RIGHT on the label! Sure enough, I was at Costco this past weekend and snagged a 2 POUND BAG of beans for $10.59 – that’s less than the cost of ONE 12 ounce bag at Starbucks! So excited that I had to share!

* Awesome Costco secrets: the Kirkland Brand Vodka is actually made by Grey Goose and the shampoo and conditioner is made by Pureology (my fave)!

The perk mentioned of having a “cheap date night” at Costco made me chuckle. Rarely is a trip to Costco cheap 🙂 Thanks for the great post!

    • Liz

We call it the $100 store. Usually it’s more but I have never left with less!!

      • KT

We call it the $200 store, which means it’s a good day when we don’t have to sign the receipt!

        • Jennifer

Omg! Yes! 99% of the time, we spend $200 or so on food only! But it will last us about 4 weeks for 2 people so it’s still not bad 🙂

    • harlow

Lol… another great thing is as collin mentioned in her post if u get into “power cooking ” this would be perfect place to buy all that food!!!!

    • pandoraaddict

Can be cheap at the food court or just eating samples 😉

  2. Naomi

Love Costco. We shop there all the time. We just purchased a month worth of freeze dried emergency food in a 5 gallon bucket on Costco.com! I’m glad we will have food in case of “the big one”

I just wish Oregon would allow liquor sales outside of a liquor store.

  3. Mary

I love Costco! I do a majority of my food shopping for my family of 9 there. Added bonus is the food court, the food is delicious, filling, and cheaper than McDonalds.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Awesome! Thanks for sharing Mary!

  4. Victoria

I have a family of five – my husband, a 6, 3 and 1 1/2 yr old. The young two are still in diapers. I like to try to feed my family organic as much as possible. I have a target, aldi and costco all next to each other pretty close to my house. I have been couponing for a few years now and I am wondering if costco is worth it for me or if I should just stick to my couponing at target and cvs and aldis cheap prices. Anyone with any advice on this would be much appreciated thanks!

    • ohiogirl

Hi Victoria. I checked out Costco last year for organic items. Based on what the Costco by me carried and the cost, I did not find it to be worth it. I felt I was better off at Aldi and BJs price wise. I also prefer organic products that are not processed and imported. If I recall correctly, Costco carried a lot of processed and imported Organic items.

      • nydia

Over the last 6-8 months my local Costco has started to carry a lot more organic food items. We buy organic chicken, spinach, berries, pasta sauce, nuts, eggs…pretty much everything. Just a year ago I would only get organic chicken and butter.
They are getting better by the day!

    • Ali

I I think Cosco has great deals on organic meats and milk. You have to have the place to store it because it comes in such big quantities but the last time I was there I paid 10.49 for a three pack of (half gallons) organic milk. My Costco also sells organic ground beef and ground turkey etc.i’m not sure if they all have a lot of organics so you may want to call your local store first before you commit to the membership

      • Sara

Careful with this meat. It may say organic, but it’s really important to look for grass fed!!

        • Kim

It’s grass fed but it’s also imported lists five possible countries of origin and some of them are scary. $10.50 for milk is crazy!! That’s more than 2 organic full gallons at Kroger or Walmart, more expensive than 3 half gallons anywhere! Not a single store even whole foods charges that much for half gallons! Many things are cheaper at Costco but you have to know your prices.

    • Kat

Costco varies their stock by region. I moved from FL (few organics, an entire chip asile) back home to CO (almost everything is organic… frozen fruit/veg doesn’t even have conventional option, 2 chip options. We have ground flax flour and a huge organic quinoa bag for $25). I highly doubt that they are cheaper than Aldi, though. I think pretty much anywhere is cheaper than Target 😉 (I loathe couponing there).

  5. holjol

My guy treats me to a polish dog and a drink i think its $1.50 when we get our essentials!! Cheap dinner at least i dont have to cook!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Sweet! 😉

    • Cheryl

If I use link is it an additional $10 off the $55? How does this work? Thanks

      • Jennifer

        Hi Cheryl
Yes, it’s an additional $10 off, so you would get it for $45, but you must create a (new) Living Social account. Just go through my link and it should say either $45 when you get to the offer page OR it should prompt you to create a Social Living account and get the $10 off like that. Hope this helps! But let me know if it doesn’t 🙂

      • Jennifer

Oh no! So I clicked on my own link (from a different computer) to see if the deal would show for $55 instead of $45, but it didn’t. I called Living Social to ask why and apparently their “refer a friend” program is no longer active. It was active yesterday because my friend was able to get $10 off so they must have changed it today. And by reading the comments below, it looks like it isn’t working for anybody. So sorry Cheryl! 🙁

  6. Melinda

Their diapers are also made by Kimberly Clark who make huggies

  7. SLS

Don’t forget the $5 rotisserie chickens!

We have a family of two and buy lots of condiments at costco – olives, sundried tomatoes, capers, artichoke hearts, pickled veg, etc. and they all make food more delicious. Also the best prices for cheese and salmon around!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for sharing! Good to know!

  8. Tracie

Also, great prices on hearing aid batteries!

  9. dblD-amber

Great on a hot summer day. Stop in for berry smoothies. I have 2 young boys and since they can’t finish one by themselves, they are very kind about splitting 1 smoothie into 2 cups.

  10. Sarah

Costco is BY FAR better than Sam’s Club, IMO.

    • dblD-amber

We have both and in our area each has its own unique items. We frequent sams more only because it’s closer but do think costco have better quality items.

    • ihearthip

I still love Sam’s but 2 memberships is not in my budget right now.

    • Kim

We have both. SAMs has organic Kettle brand chips same size and price for Costco’s conventional Keytle brand chips. (The same price as the small bag from whole foods so a great price!) SAMs also has a few other unique items that Costco just doesn’t. But SAMs is primarily for small businesses so they have less items for families when it comes to options. (I was told that by both managers at SAMs and Costco)

      How does this work Kate?

      • kate (@katethy99)

click on my link to set up your new account. $10 will then be applied to your account. then use someone else’s link to buy the costco deal. thx.

      • kate (@katethy99)

the $10 referral was working earlier today but doesn’t work now. you may want to try tomorrow.

  12. Megan

I’ve been using Google Express to have all of my shelf stable stuff from Costco delivered. It’s pretty fantastic. 🙂

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Oh cool!

  13. Sara

We LOVE Costco. We have “dates” there regularly! My husband bought the diamond that’s in my engagement ring from Costco. He took his brother in law (who worked at Kays for several years) with just to look. He found a ring at Costco with a diamond in it that our brother in law said, “I would have put this in my wife’s engagement ring”. He Purchased it then took it to Kays where he having the ring custom made. Kays took the diamond and my husband took the band to sell it for the cash. I was SO impressed with Costco when he told me that’s where he got the diamond from! I am absolutely in love with the quality of the diamond he chose!

Not to mention all of the great deals on booze and food.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Such a cool story Sara! Thanks for sharing!

  14. Cheryl

If we use someone’s link does that give us additional money off the $55 sign up fee?? Thanks

    • harlow

Yes i bought a living social deal for costco for 45.00 with the 10 off referral link so instead of 55 oop it was like 23.00!!! I also did ebates that day and got 1.65 back including the 20.00 gift crd liv social gives. They tke ur pic for ur new card at Costco after u show them the deal u bought. And give u the gcard 20.0 0 then. I am a family of one and i saw all they had there and it’s perfect for me! !!! Have fun😍😛😀

  15. yolanda

Can someone email me a link for new members…for some reason I can copy the links that have been posted. Please email it to ymccray@hotmail.com. Thanks!

  16. Lindak

The only place to buy a laptop as far as I’m concerned. Have a problem or don’t like it – they’ll take it back.

    • Happymama

I think Costco ads another year’s warrantee on electronics!

  17. kristal

Does this work for any Costco or do you have to be in a certain area?

    • harlow

Hi kristal it worked for me in alabama so i think its anywhere

  18. Felice

I HATE Costco. I was accused of shoplifting there and will never go back. The item in question was a free sample of contact solution from the optometrist.

    • K

Similar happened to me at Walmart so I haven’t been there in 5 years

  19. Rusty

6.99 Costco Malbec is the best!

  20. Beth

I got a tv there and costco offers another 2yrs of warranty besides the manufacturer warranty–three years total.

  21. mary

can anyone tell me if Costco takes manufactures coupons and there’s like bjs? thanks

    • Heather C

Unfortunately, they do not. But they do have their own coupons which come out each month.

  22. tipaye

They offer discounts on new vehicle purchases through their auto program, as well!

  23. Shannon

I love Costco but the one thing that annoys me is that they are always trying to push their executive membership which I don’t want. This distracts me and the cashier and then I find errors on the receipt that I have to stand in line again at the customer service to get it fixed.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Sorry to hear that Shannon. Thanks for your honest feedback.

  24. laureen

I just want to say they have great cake!!! For my baby shower i rememeber i hit up everyone trying to find someone with a card. There aren’t any close to me in florida. Lots of sams and bjs. Oh the cake from sams is terrible! The taste of food coloring is so strong it taste toxic. Never again.

    • Heather C

And they have an amazing VEGAN chocolate cake too!!

  25. Michelle

Is anyone else having trouble with their referrals showing up? I’ve had people tell me they used my link but I haven’t gotten even 1 conformation email from Living Social. Wondering if they are just behind or if there is a problem with my link…..? Thanks for any help! 🙂

    • yolanda

Does the link give 10 off? When I was about to check it the price was still $55

      • Michelle

I’m not positive that the $10 discount works with the Costco deal or not, I’m hearing both ways, but If you buy it and get 3 people to use your link you will get it free! So the $10 wouldn’t matter anyway-they just refund whatever amount you paid. Here’s my link if you are going to buy
        https://t.livingsocial.com/deals/1462564?ref=email-jp&rpi=206122184&rui=146956309

        Thanks!

    • yolanda

I just tried but it says the refer a friend is no longer active.

  26. Christie

Just tried using someone’s link and it told me the refer a friend is no longer available. Could be why its not updating or working…

  27. Sheila

What I love is they take the product back there. We had a Samsung fridge and kept calling samsung(poor customer service) because the freezer side went out. 2 times they didn’t show. Called Costco and they took it back. A year and 2 weeks later, the fridge side this time went out. Costco took it back and gave us a refund and we bought a different brand from them. They take appliances back for the life of the warranty. Don’t buy mine anywhere else now.

    • sandy

Yes i was hesitant to buy these organic aussie bites and the clerk said no problem, if i didnt like it i could return it. I’m so glad i did because they ended up to be great and healthly alternative to granola bars!

  28. dblD-amber

Let’s not forget the cheaper gas prices as well. Although the lines take forever sometimes

    • Heather C

Do you know that the gas pumps open over 2 hours before Costco does? And NO LINES! 😍

      • Jennifer

I did not know that…..thanks for the tip Heather! 🙂

  29. Moe

How long between memberships before you can sign up again? I stopped my membership last September. Just curious if I’m eligible or not.

    • michelle

You can do this deal! Your membership just needed to have expired before Oct 31.

    • michelle

      Oops I mean Oct 1

      • Moe

        Thanks!!
