Rent the Runway: 20% Off First Order (Recommended by Hip2Save Readers)
Yesterday, I posted a reader question about how to dress for formal events on a budget and quite a few readers commented about using Rent the Runway.
Rent the Runway is an online fashion company that offers access to thousands of dresses, clothing and accessories (like handbags, jewelry and sunglasses) – you can filter styles by date, size, or occasion.
Rent the item you need for 4-8 days and return it for Free when you’re done – no need to dry clean. Easy peasy! Plus, you can even visit one of their retail stores, where you can try on a selection of dresses and rent on the spot or for a future date. AND for a limited time, you can score 20% off your first order!
My sister and I rented Bridesmaid dresses from RentTheRunway. It’s a tad risky in that you only get your dress the day before the event, however, they’ll send you two different sizes of the same dress so one is guaranteed to fit. The website also has many reviews and photos to help make your choice. The price was great, especially with the discount on your first purchase. I highly recommend!
Awesome! Thanks for your feedback Katie!
I checked it out and with those prices I’m better off just going to buy something hah
$100 to keep a basic flouncy A-line for 4 days! I could buy one at a department store for $15 lol
lol I agree.
I rented a dress for a wedding last summer & loved it! The process was easy & the dress looked great! I liked not having to spend a fortune on a dress I’d wear once or twice.
I rented a dress for my birthday. They sent 2 different size and one fitted me perfectly. I had a blast in that dress. Everything came on time and wrinkle free. My only issue with them was, I sent the dress a day late and these people tried charging me $100 for being a day late. I understand that I sent it late, but a $100? I might as well have put the money I rented the dress + the $100 and brought a new dress. For that reason alone I don’t plan on using them again.
I didn’t realize they offered plus sizes – awesome!
I have ordered from them several times in plus sizes. They are so awesome and I always look so much nicer than things I could afford to buy.
I understand about the one day late thing, but I rented something awhile back and the person before me was late. So, I was bummed but they offered me ANY dress to make up for it. So I rented a $30 dress and got a $240 one. I think they just have to scramble when someone is late.
Playing off of Collins Bon-ton post. They have this Super pretty sequin beaded dress for $38 after code reg $218 sizes 6-16 https://m.bonton.com/sc1/women/womens-dresses/pisarro-nights-sequin-beaded-dress-952912.html
Hi Jennine,
I couldn’t get the code to work 🙁
Emily
Do they rent plus size dresses also?
Oh sorry. Just read comments from Rachel about renting plus size. Thanks.
I love RTR, I have the PRO membership, $32 a year, I get free shipping and don’t have to pay the $5 insurance plus $50 bday promo code, I usually rent $30-$40 dresses and at least once a year a ball gown for the holiday dress, I rather pay $30 and have an awesome designer dress, like Herve Legger or Versace then going to the mall and looking for hours, they also have unlimited for $139 a year but I don’t go out that much and I work from so home so I don’t need to dress up that often
I used RTR for a formal in January and was very pleased with the whole process! If you’ve never done RTR before and want to try, use my referral link for $20 off!

I actually used RTR last year for my small courthouse wedding. I got a gorgeous Badgley Mischka dress for around $75. I thought it was well worth it instead of spending hundreds on a dress I’ll never wear again. I was nervous about the sizing but it fit perfectly.
I really wished they shipped to APO addresses.
I love RTR and will spare you all the great things I have to say and provide some insight how to best make it work for you if you are hesitant. Be sure to pay close attention to the reviews. Be sure the reviewer’s body type matches yours, bra size, hips,,etc.. Be sure to measure yourself and compare that as well.
When deciding on a dress for a MAJOR occasion and you feel its too risky to wait to the day before, I suggest the following, Rent the dress a month in advance. Try it on and see if it works. The same day call them and tell them it didn’t fit right, they’ll instruct you to return it. (I have always found customer service very helpful). If the dress worked, re-rent the dress on the appropriate date. You wont get your money back for the rented dress that “did not fit” but you will get a credit… use the credit when you re-rent the dress. Of course you must be committed at some point to rent a dress. But they have plenty of items to choose from and specials throughout the year. .
Hope this helps and makes you a fan as well.
