    Isn’t Scentsy a Pyramid Scheme?

    • Heather Llanes

Michelle, great question! Pyramid schemes usually are around people signing up and getting paid to have other people sign up without involving the purchase of products. On the other hand, Scentsy doesn’t pay their consultants anything just for signing someone up. All compensation is based around the sales of the awesome products. It is just like an avon or tupperware or mary kay biz, it’s called Direct Selling. If you have more questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

      • Kim

If Scentsy didn’t give sponsors any incentive to have people sign up you and others here wouldn’t be begging for sign ups. The difference between Scentsy and the others you listed is Scentsy has restrictions on how much you can make. With Mary Kay and Avon you are allowed to open a physical store they are in many malls have stands in boutique. If Scentsy finds out you are in a boutique they revoke your pending profits and black list you. They force you to rely on parties begging friends and families to have one and limiting events to one Scentsy booth so you have limited sources for non family and profits through signups. (hilarious that a person with 10 generations under her can get a $15,000+ pay check off their sales a month alone and you say there’s no pay sign ups)

    • Lauren

Technically yes, but you’ll never hear anyone who sells it say that because they need to recruit people to sell under them so they can make more money.

    • Heather Llanes

Would you consider avon, tupperware or mary kay a pyramid? Not at all! Direct Selling companies offer women an opportunity to work at home and earn extra income for their families by selling products. Pyramid schemes are illegal and those companies don’t last like Scentsy and the others mentioned above.

    • Chelsey

Most pyramid schemes you have to recruit people to make money. With Scentsy you make 20% of everything you sell until you’ve sold $1,000 and then you make 25%. Yes, you can make more if you have people on your team but you don’t have to recruit to make money.

      • michelle

I do believe these companies (Avon, Tupperware, Mary Kay) prey on the ones who can least afford to get involved with them. Check out the Pink Truth website. Its very informative. https://www.pinktruth.com/

    • Bethany

Yep! MLM—multi level marketing like Avon and Longaberger and Silpada and well any of those companies that have representatives that throw “parties” and try to guilt you into buying things from a “friend”. It’s genius actually. Call it a “party” and the guest is expected to show thanks in some way, right? In this case it’s by opening your wallet. I say never mix business and pleasure. Friends are friends; best not to alienate them by making them feel obligated to support your business.

      • michelle

I agree. These companies prey on the ones who can least afford to get involved. Check out the PINKTRUTH website.

        • Rae

I actually became friends with someone who was selling these products not friends before but after. No pushing either I just know what she sells, and if I need cosmetics I can ask or I can just chat about family, kids etc.

        • Julia L.

Yes read this site! I spent the morning researching these MLM companies and this site offers insight from former Mary Kay consultants. I was shocked at so many things I read! 👏🏽👏🏽

    • Linda

I understand people’s frustration with direct sales companies…I myself used to wonder how legit they really were. It wasn’t until I was looking at going back to work after having my kids that I considered every “work at home” option available to me. As a former teacher I had a lot of Usborne books in my classroom that my students loved. After A LOT of thought I decided to become a consultant with Usborne Books & More (a children’s book publishing company). I’m so thankful for this opportunity, as it has allowed me to stay home with my boys and earn a nice income. I’ve never held a retail position in my life and don’t really consider myself a salesperson! I don’t pressure anyone into buying and am totally fine if people tell me “no thanks”. No one should be pressured to buy anything, it’s YOUR money! Now that I have my own business (never thought I would say those words!) I go out of my way to help support my friends who are also in direct sales. I get beauty products, clothing, protein powder, etc. from my friends.

I just wanted to share my experience because when you’re buying from a direct sales rep, you’re not just buying a product, you’re impacting real families. Are products cheaper on Amazon? You bet! But your purchase from a direct sales company helps a family pay their bills, put food on the table, or save for a fun family vacation 🙂

Hi there, I started selling Scentsy last year to help a friend get someone on her team… well, I have fallen in love with not only the products but the overall concept and mission of the Company. I have been lucky enough to earn a trip coming up this Summer… I would love nothing more than for you to join my team and go on the next trip WITH ME! Email me with any questions you may have… jennsloan.scentsy@gmail.com

If I want Scentsy I get it from EBay or Amazon. My last rep was horrible and good luck trying to find out how to contact Scentsy directly. At least I am protected by Amazon and EBay if there is an issue and the seller/rep can’t just not respond. I get Scentsy is built on reps, but if you have an issue, you should be able to have them respond or contact the company for help:(

    • Chelsey

I’m sorry to hear that you had a bad experience. I’m sure you’re going to get a lot of comments but if you ever need help please let me know. Plus, if you are having issues with a consultant please let Scentsy know. You can contact them here: 1-877-855-0617
My email is prettyinpink2904@yahoo.com if you would like to work with a consultant again or are still having issues that need to be fixed.

  8. Sarah

I think some people but the Starter kit just for their own personal use, not to sell Scentsy.

    • Heather Llanes

Sarah, that is very true! In fact, many successful Scentsy consultants today admit when they first joined, it was to just get the kit without ever planning to sell. But… sometimes, and quite often, others start needing to find more, and it is is too hard to pass up that extra income.

  9. Jennifer Castillo

This is a GREAT way to get started! Let me know if I can help YOU with any questions you may have!! Feel free to head over to my website to browse, learn more or join my team!! http://www.jennifercastillo.scentsy.us

  12. Lisa

I’m interested in knowing not about this. What all comes with the kit for $49? If someone can email me some facts and also what is the earned amount on sales? Thank you! Andrejko1204@icloud.com

  13. kelly

Scentsy is a great direct selling company! I signed up 3 years ago after hosting a party for my friend. I absolutely love their products but it’s much more than that. Scentsy is a GREAT FAMILY company! They have such an awesome support system and you will meet plenty of new friends along the way. You can put as little or as much as you want into the business. This $49 kit is a great chance to try it out without much to lose!
Feel free to email me with any questions at kchristine8@sbcglobal.net or you can visit
    my website http://www.kellybatchelor.scentsy.us

  14. Mel

Those teens moms all did scentsy lol. Can you make money with this? Has anyone made a decent profit?

    • Chelsey

It depends on how much you like the product. It’s hard to sell something you don’t personally like or use. I’ve never had a home party and only sell online and do pretty well. Around the holidays I sell a lot more because people are buying gifts so I have always had Christmas paid for!

  15. Lisa

Quick question can anyone in sales say what the 99 dollar kit has compared to the 49 kit? Also does it include any oils? Much appreciated thank you. Ennlisa92@icloud.com

    • Chelsey

      Emailed you!

    • Carla

The standard kit I got for $99 had washer whiffs, hand lotion, body lotion, and dryer bars in addition to what you see here. This kit appears to have all the promotional materials, catalogs, all the scent samples (very important) a full size warmer, and a full size bar. I’m happy to help get you started. Email me at smarinersfan3@yahoo.com.

    • Miranda

Hey Lisa! This is what comes in the $49 kit! The $99 is doubled per say but you only get one Warmer, the $99 kit you’d get the larger testers, a second bar, something from the laundry line, the beauty line, etc.

Just in time for our new Spring/Summer 2016 catalog season, we’re offering a $49 US/ $59 CDN Starter Kit for new Consultants who join in March 2016. It includes all the essentials for launching a successful Scentsy business:

      •1 Scentsy Warmer
      •1 Scentsy Bar

      •1 pack of Print-Your-Own Labels
•1 full set of Spring/Summer 2016 Mini Testers
      •1 pack of Party Invitations
      •1 Consultant Start-Up Guide
      •1 Quick-Start Guide
      •1 pack of Spring/Summer 2016 Catalogues

  17. Miranda

And also remember your start up kit is a tax write off! Also Lisa no oils currently come in either start up kit. 😉

  18. Jen

If you join to just get the items for yourself, do you get a discount on your own personal orders in the future?

    • Carla

In a way. You pay the listed price but on payday you receive your commission for your own sales. You also can make yourself a hostess of your own party and get the hostess rewards as well. I’m offering a personal special for anyone who signs up with me as a sponsor. Feel free to email me at smarinersfan3@yahoo.com or call or text 2174191618. I’m always happy to help guide someone and yes you can sign up for your own personal use. I find that my website keeps my business running without doing parties so the amount of work you want to put in is all up to you. Enjoy! https://carladickey.scentsy.us/Enrollment/Join

    • Miranda

So you don’t get a discount, but you earn commission on what you buy, but there are a lot of other perks. Hope this helps.

    • Kim

Yes and no. You can make a commission off your own sales but to stay active you would have to buy much more product than you can use yourself. I forgot the exact number but know even my $250+ monthly wasn’t enough to stay active even with the successful parties averaging $500 wasn’t enough to stay active. So you REALLY have to love Scentsy to rely on yourself. After expenses most of these consultants are broken even ask them to see their w-2s from this year 😜 Wouldn’t be begging if they were busy making money.

  19. Shannon

I’m so tired of pushy mlm people trying to pretend to be my friend just to get me to buy their stuff. If anyone is being super nice that’s why. If I want something it’s Amazon prime all the way…

    • Heather

      Agreed! I feel used 😖

  20. Carla

I’m offering my own personal special to anyone who joins this journey with me as their sponsor. My website does the work and I enjoy the benefits and so can you! Contact me at 2174191618 or smarinersfan3@yahoo.com for my personal special for joining. I’m always here to answer questions and will include you in our Facebook group to keep up on your business. It’s easy and only $49 to get started (plus my personal special which you will love especially if you have children)!

  23. Barb

I love scentsy products but absolutely hate that you have to have a party or go through a representative to purchase the products. All I have ever encountered with representatives is constant pressure and hounding to buy more and hold more parties. People in my neighborhood are really turned off by parties and frankly don’t have the time to attend. Not to mention, the products are a bit pricey. If they cut out the middleman (representative) and just sold scentsy on-line or at your local store I think Scentsy would sell more and make more profit – then pass the savings onto the consumer by dropping the prices. I sold Pampered chef years ago, never never again will I sell anything. People avoid you because they think your will ask them to hold a party, or buy their product etc etc., just not worth it to me.

    • Jenn

      Hi Barb,
I understand your frusteration. I am very low key and no pressure. Just happen to love and enjoy what I can sell. I enjoy making my customers happy and providing them with the best customer service. If there is anything I can help you with please feel free to email me anytime.

So how much do you have to sell a month to stay active?

      • Jennier

Are you allowed to sell your items on eBay?

        • Jenn Sloan

          Hi Jennifer,
Unfortunately selling on ebay or Amazon is out of compliance. I know other consultants do it… but it is against the rules. 🙁
