My insurance covered a breast pump when I had my daughter. I paid $0 for this pump. Make sure to check with whichever insurance company you have!

    • Jamie

This happened with me too! Check with your insurance company!

    • Jen

does insurance provide a pump for second child too? I received one for free for my first

      • Sharae

I was told by my insurance that I’ll could receive a new one each pregnancy if I wanted one!

        • visitor3

My insurance even let me get an second pump for the same baby since the baby has nursed SO LONG that we wore out the first pump. Each plan varies, so call and find out all the details. Some require a purchase from a specific medical supply company. Others will let you buy your own and get reimbursed.

If it’s not covered, it is still eligible under flex spending plans. Also the supplies (like replacement parts, batteries, etc.)

      • Sofia

I have Kaiser and they gave me another one for next baby. The rep I spoke with said it sort of refreshes every year and since last time I got one was in 2014, I can get a new one this year. I have Ameda though not Medela.

      • Mary

I received a free one for my second. However the offer wasn’t there with my first.

    • Jensen

I was just going to say the same thing! This is a great pump but I got mine for free and most folks probably can do the same through their insurance.

  2. candace

Not to downplay the deal (because it is good) but remember that the act that got pushed a few years ago means that most (possibly all?) health insurance providers offer a free pump. This was the one I had. I needed a doctors note to give to my insurance and had to call them to find out where I had to get it. I had to make an hour trip but it was free. I just checked since I’m trying for baby again. My insurance allows one per pregnancy.

    • SJ

Not all…my insurance doesn’t cover pumps…I paid $400 out of pocket for my Freestyle and then another $150 for a spectra.

  3. Cari

Great pump! Insurance paid for mine.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Awesome! Thanks for the feedback!

  4. dblD-amber

Mine as well. Currently renting hospital grade pump at no charge. Best thing ever thanks obama

This is a good machine I used it for entire year.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Sweet! Glad to hear that!

  6. Jessica

I agree. Call your insurance company. They paid for mine as well.

  7. maggierietz

Definitely check with insurance, but don’t assume anything. Somehow my employer was grandfathered in to NOT include it (even though with my first, they did-apparently due to some coding errors that weren’t supposed to happen), so with my second I got the prescription for it and bought it through a supplier as required before and then it was denied.

  8. Amy

When I had my daughter 2 years ago I had two separate insurance plans. Somehow both had loop holes to get out of covering a pump for me. Ended up buying this one, it’s a great pump.

    • Deb

Yeah, there are some loopholes. But, most insurance plans cover hospital-grade pumps. If you are on WIC, check with your local WIC office about what they will cover.

      • Stephannie Kotalik

Also if you are on Medicaid, you most likely will be eligible for a breast pump if you are not on WIC. Check your insurance plan, whether you have private insurance or Medicaid. You may be able to get a pump covered.

  9. Crystle

Not all insurances cover pumps. I had to purchase one (which was this one) a few years ago. But my insurance now, covers one. Which they should with how much we pay for it. Always check though. Medela is a great brand!

  10. Deb

And, a reminder that under IRS regulations (passed in 11/2014), breastfeeding supplies are tax-deductible. This includes nipple cream, pump attachments, bottles and storage bags, pads, etc. The tax write-off is retroactive to 2010

    • heather

Great reminder! Also remember though that your medical expenses have to be greater than 10% of your adjusted gross income before you can start deducting these costs. For some it may be beneficial to track, for others – not so much.

      • Deb

But, even if you can’t meet that requirement, the fact that they are tax-deductible means that you can use your FSA (Flexible Spending Account) to pay for items, so there is still the ability to pay with pre-tax money.

      • Rachel

Actually, per the IRS publication 502 (dated 2015 since that’s what’s the IRS has on their site currently) it has to be higher than 7.5% of your AGI, not 10%, to deduct medical expenses. And on the state side, your state’s threshold may be even lower. However, it’s good to know that nipple creams, pumps parts. etc, are tax deductible because, instead of trying to spend over 7.5% of your AGI on medical expenses to get the tax deduction, you can use your FSA or HSA card (if you have one) to reap the benefits of using pre-tax monies.

        • heather

The 7.5% threshold is if you or your spouse is 65 or older. Otherwise it’s 10%. But yes – there are other tax-exempt options such as the savings accounts mentioned. I just didn’t want people thinking you can deduct everything…for some people, keeping all of those receipts (if you’re not using a health savings account for your purchase in the first place) would be burdensome and would yield no reward at the end.

  11. Sara

    Insurance covered mine as well!

  12. heather

Sadly, a lot of government workers have insurance plans through their employment that don’t cover breastpumps. Crazy, I know, but true. I have friends with husbands that are officers in the army and theirs was not covered. I now work in a government job and am pregnant with #2. I’m hoping mine is covered, but not counting on it due to what my friends went through!

    • Jamie

My hubby is in the air force and mine was covered. Second kid (and she was almost five months before I even called!)

      • heather

Really? I just called my insurance out of curiosity. They told me the same thing my friends said they were told…they would pay $28-30 of an electric pump, which is the price of a single manual pump.

    • Megan

If they have Tricare it’s covered. It also depends when they had their baby. It didn’t go into effect until December 2013 I want to say. My first born was in January 2013 and my pump was not covered.

      • Jamie

Yes, it wasn’t covered with my first who was born in 2011. But now with tricare it is. They had a few to pick from, but I got the double electric medela. Free is the best!

  13. Ashlee

Shoutout to the best president ever! <3 Obamacare for supplying so many with free/reduced pumps!

    • Chris

Best President Ever???? I think that’s an over statement. We must be living in different worlds.

      • Erin

Haha, guess he appreciates how easy she is to please. Glad someone is happy with his presidency!

      • Liz

Looks like majority of us are in the same world…u know the world where knowing math and science are considered a good thing.Oh and polling also is on our side….i hope and pray that the ‘trumpets’ are silenced in Nov.

    • visitor3

Well, the money comes from somewhere, whether higher premiums or taxpayers (our earned money). No such thing as free. Definitely a nice thing for nursing moms, tho.

  14. Elle

I concur! Check with insurance first! I bought a pump out of pocket with my first child (almost $300!) before ACA. My second, I was able to get a pump for free because ACA had kicked in. I know a lot of people like to hate on Obamacare, but that was a true blessing to my family.

Now if only we could have paid maternity leave!

    • Liz

Love so many positive comments about Obamacare…are there problems?…im sure…but it was time we replaced our old system..i would have preferred a single payer system just like every developed country in the world. But we are on the way. Our healthcare is one of the most expensive and we are ranking in the bottom 50 in the list of the 1st first world countries.

      • Deb

I think we can all agree that having access to breast pumps and the promotion of breastfeeding is a good thing from a public health standpoint. (I am not saying that bottle feeding is wrong—please don’t take my comment that way.) But, perhaps there are other sites where political discourse is more appropriate?

        • Chris

          True!

  15. sue

I bought one from by bye Baby used it once and never used it again because I never had time to pump. If you want it email me Suzycoca@Gmail.com

    • Deb

This may be a perfectly fine thing to do, but please do your research first before you use a used breast pump. Some models cannot be fully sterilized and breast milk can carry CMV and HIV. Some models use a “closed” system, so cross-contamination is not possible.

    • Just Me

My midwife gave me her old one when she walked in on me using a hand pump while I waited on her lol. I was Army at the time ( manual took forever for me and I was a milk machine) and she just gave me the new tubing package system the hospital gave that attached to the hospital grade version.

      • Deb

As an OB nurse who works at a Baby Friendly hospital, I need to share that not all hospital grade pumps use the closed (no possibility of contamination) system. Your hospital’s lactation consultants can help you learn which pumps are safe to just use a new tubing kit and which are not.

  16. Nikole

It is pulling up at 199 for me

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Thanks for the heads up!

  17. Vivian

Used this for 2 kids! It’s a great pump! I did receive a free ameda pump from kaiser for my 2nd, but I didn’t even open it.

  18. Ali

I used this pump with my first. It’s okay. However, I can’t say enough about the “Spectra” pump that my insurance provided with my second child. They sell for around $100 on Amazon and it is a much quieter pump with better suction. My milk production increased using the spectra.

    • SJ

      I love my spectra too!

  19. Cristine

    This is a great pump!

  20. Danielle

I called to inquire about pump coverage and was flat out told that “pumps are not covered under my individual health care plan”. Thankfully, I BF for two years so I get my money’s worth, but not having to spend $200 would have been nice.
