Hop on over to Amazon where you can score a Amazon Fire TV + HD Antenna Bundle for just $94.99 shipped (regularly $131.47)! This bundle includes an Amazon Fire TV, the AmazonBasics Ultra Thin Indoor HDTV Antenna (35-mile) and an AmazonBasics HDMI cable (6 Feet). How does this bundle work?
The Amazon Fire TV + HD Antenna Bundle comes with three separate products (mentions above). When you use these devices together, you can access great television shows and movies without cable. Fire TV lets you stream TV shows and movies from Amazon Video, Netflix, HBO NOW, and more, while the AmazonBasics HD Antenna receives free over-the-air HD local broadcast content from stations like ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX.
(Thanks, Couponing 2 Savings!)
Is there a monthly charge to use this?
No monthly subscription charge for this, but you do have to have an internet subscription.
No there isn’t. You need to have it loaded the right skins though so you can pretty much watch anything from anywhere. Some people don’t know that.
How do you do that?
I don’t know if you can have it loaded straight on Amazon or not. But we ordered off eBay full loaded with the skins my husband wanted. You would want Kodi, Exodus, Prime Wire if they don’t come on there. You can watch mostly anything from anywhere any time period, live tv, movies, shows, etc. It is streams so different ones work better than others. Over all I have been pretty happy with it.
I wasn’t think all that is with in Kodi but there are other good skins too. If you search eBay for loaded ones you will probably be able to tell skins you need
So this can almost duplicate what we get with cable? With the monthly subscription to Netflix still I assume. What about dvr?
I don’t think you need a subscription.
No dvr available it basically gets you access to tv programs via Internet amazon has its own selection of tv and movies or you can use your Netflix subscription through it as well
When you can watch any show or movie anytime you want…. there’s no need for DVR or REDBOX… JUST LOOK ON YOUTUBE TO SEE HOW TO LOAD UP KODI AND THEN LOOK UP HOW TO ADD EXODUS AND SALT (THESE ARE THE ADD-ONS TO KODI TO WATCH THE MOVIES)
I’ve been trying to find a list of channels that it offers, anyone know where I can find that?
It depends what skins you have they are like apps.
So the channels that come from the antenna will vary depending on your area, and they might not come in at all depending on where you are. Otherwise, you’ll get what you subscribe to – Netflix, Hulu, HBOGo (if you have a friend with cable), I think even CBS is developing an app (but again, you’d need a friend with cable to share a login).
I am assuming you would have a separate monthly charge to use Netflix and Hulu?
I know HSN has a 2 pack Amazon Fire stick with voice remotes for $89.95.
Is this a better deal? I want to drop cable so bad but all of this is so confusing to me. Help! Any advice will be greatly appreciated
Fire TV and Fire Stick run almost the same way. Just the thing is Fire Tv is a streaming box, so u can plug in your hard drive too. Play local content. And since I’ve used both, I find the fire stick more convenient, since, as you mentioned, you can get 2 Sticks for the price of one box. I’d say the Fire Stick is a better deal.
Install kodi onto it and you get free access to almost every tv show or movie out there
Be careful–loading 3rd party apps, using Kodi on your Firebox may not be against the law until you download & stream the movies free of charge. That is not what Kodi was designed for!!! Do some research before you suggest illegal activity!
FireTV is a terrific product if used within the law.
Can I still get local channel with this?
Yes, it appears you can. Here’s what the description states:
“When you use these devices together, you can access great television shows and movies without cable. Fire TV lets you stream TV shows and movies from Amazon Video, Netflix, HBO NOW, and more, while the AmazonBasics HD Antenna receives free over-the-air HD local broadcast content from stations like ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX.”
Collin-
Can you or someone on your team do a comparison type wrote up on all this? It seems many readers (myself included) would love to drop dish/directv/cable but need more information. TYIA!!
What about ESPN and other sports channels? Nbc sports, Fox Sports?
Look into PlayStation vue subscription. I was just able to drop Dish because it did include fox sports, ESPN, and a bunch of others. $35 a month compared to $90. The best part is that my husband is happy to watch his games on his iPad and not take over the tv with sports all day. PlayStation.com/vue
Does it have bravo? Or a way to get it?
Hello! We have not had cable for a few years now. We stream through Hulu & Netflix for around $8/month each. My husband also built us a cheap antenna (~$5) which stands in our front yard that gives us access to live tv on all the local networks & over the air channels we can pick up. It usually streams through the cheap antenna at HD & we have better quality than the digital antenna we had tried first. I am sure you can google how to do this. You can also look it up online which channels are likely to be broadcast in your area & see by zip code which channels you may be able to pick up via antenna. We do have a roku box to stream through, but since getting a smart tv, we haven’t used it as much. Good luck!
What about the jail broke ones?
I just ordered Dish for my new home….thinking if i should cancel and just do this instead.
Sling is an app for this, Roku & similar and you get many cable channels like HGTV and NFL Network partnered with them for this season. Similar to Netflix in that it’s a subscription but SO much cheaper than cable.
Check out PlayStation vue. Even better than sling!!!
With firestick if you have the right skins you don’t need Netflix or Hulu or anything . You can watch anything that there ever was. Sometimes live sports are tricky but can be watched. We might get antenna for that.
Our antenna is super hit or miss. Signed up for DirectTV. Do others have and like DirectTV?
I love my Direct TV. Of course it costs more than some of these other options, but I like the convenience. We almost watch exclusively off the DVR, the kids can only watch what I let them record. My husband has all the sports channels that he wants, too. It always works and I don’t have to set anything up, for all this, the price is worth it for our family. We are just an “old school” family I guess!
I’m with you. Been with DirecTV for 8 years. We love it. Ya it costs a lot more but to our family it is worth it. We live very rurally so firing the winters we hibernate and watch holiday movies. Lol.
Michelle. I have direct tv and yes it can get expensive ! But call them.. Depending how long you have been a customer they do offer discounts!!! But you have to call and say it’s too expensive , and your thinking of cancelling. ( your not really cancelling 😄) !! They gave $40 off a month for a year!! I can tell you they will definitely offer u something to keep you..
I like directv but the bill just keeps going up and up and up for nothing.
My bill hadn’t changed in years. Unless we order a movie. You should call them. Every 6 months they have deals and they pass them on to existing customers, you just have to call.
Just call them & ask for the cancellation dept. They dropped my bill by $25 a month just for being a loyal customer. I do this once a year. We have Directv because of the sports channels. That’s all my hubby watches.
Since ATT took over I haven’t been able to be a discount. I have been with them for years. I am thinking of cutting them loose.
I called yesterday and told them I was being bombarded with Sling tv,etc. Our bill went from $90 for the expanded basic to $44.95 for plus, then she added HBO for $10 a month for 6 months ($7off)Showtime for 4 months free, and NFL Sunday ticket for mobile free. The 1 yr contract takes $50 off per month. I can drop HBO anytime, hubby wanted to watch Ballers.
I got rid of cable 6 months ago and have never been happier
From our experience with Apple TV you have to have a cable subscription to access many of the apps/skins. Maybe I am doing something wrong. Does anyone know if this is the case?
I have an Apple TV too and I’m just as confused; does anyone have any information about how the Apple TV works?
Fire TV and Apple TV are the same in the sense that they are are like place holders. They offer different channels (skins as called here) for which you either need a subscription or a cable account. The difference is that they both offer slightly different channels (for example Apple doesn’t have Amazon videos and Fire TV doesn’t have iTunes). You can play video games with both. You get for watch for free either the movies you own on iTunes (both or from digital codes) and the Amazon Prime Video if you are a subscriber. You can watch here and there on some Channels short videos for free. You can listen to music on both of them, and watch your photos.
Both devices have their pluses and minuses. First one is that Apple doesn’t allow you to install Kodi (because of all the illegal activities it is associated with). You can install Kodi on Fire TV but I would recommend you disable the auto update in case Amazon decides to disable it too. With the voice remote, using Alexa you can shop on Amazon, it is cool but it is not the easiest thing. I personally have the older and the newest models of both Fire TV and Apple TV. I love the picture quality and the new remote of the Apple TV. I love the air play on Apple TV, which means that wirelessly I can connect my other iDevices and use the TV as a monitor only – ex. Play games on your iPad on the big screen or use your Mac and the TV as a big monitor. Possibilities are endless.
After this lengthy post I would like to say that the TV you choose should be based on you preferences. Go to their product pages and compare the channels. If you want Kodi then you should get Fire TV. If you have smart TV and don’t want Kodi then you don’t need any of them because you have the same things on you TV.
Also, please don’t pay so much money for Fire TV with Kodi. Google it or go to you tube and do it yourself. It seems complicated but if you do it step by step you will succeed.
And as far as prices go this price is really good with the antenna, if you are. It going to use it buy only the Fire TV. It is often on sale for $85 (last week at Staples for ex.) and occasionally for $75. Fire stick is the smaller brother of Fire TV. It doesn’t have the games and it is less powerful and it comes with a remote without voice control.
Hope this helps someone make an informed decision. If Colin reads this and is interested I can throw in an article.
Thank you, very enlightening!
Thanks!!
I have satellite internet. Do you think this would work well enough with this?
I am so tempted to do this. My understanding is you can get ps4 Vue app for $30 that has channels and works as a dvr?
Yes and it is awesome! Love it!
I would love to drop our expensive cable but my husband needs his sports channels! It seems like the streaming devices do not offer much in the way of sports. Am I missing something? Any advice/suggestions would be great!
I’d love info or ideas about this as well. We pay almost $220/month for an Internet and cable bundle and I don’t even like TV! it’s so my husband and watch sports.
Same here! If the hubby isn’t happy watching sports, nobody is happy lol. Some things are worth the money. Oh, go bucks too!
We’ve explored Sling TV but there are still the games on the Big Ten network (like today) holding us back. Go Bucks!
https://www.playstation.com/en-us/network/vue/ look into this
Look into PlayStation vue. They have tons of sports stations included in their $35 a month package including fox sports, ESPN, espn 2,etc https://www.playstation.com/en-us/network/vue/
I got apple tv hoping to access channels, but nothing works without signing in to a cable subscription, so I would like to know what benefits the fire tv has that would be different? The only channel available on apple tv is ABC, even NBC and CBS require a cable subscription.
If you read my lengthy post above you’d get some info. Hope that helps.
We love our Fire stick! And Kodi!
We very recently dropped DirecTV, had for 5 years. We did love having a DVR, but just found we watched far too little to justify the price anymore. Yes, it’s cheap at first, but will steadily go up. And yes you can keep calling & threatening to cancel and get some discounts that way, but that usually ropes you into a contract. We have basic cable channels & 50mbps internet thru Cox now for $65, that’s including tax & all the fees that get added on. So we can watch a few games on the local channels. But we are getting Sling Tv for football season, both packages is $40 but that gets you all the Fox sports channels + ESPN+ NFL Network and lots of other channels. We’re gonna drop it after football season or downgrade to $20 plan, but for now, still huge savings over what we were paying. If you NEED to watch football like my hubby lol, that may be an option.
Now we have Amazon Prime we share with my parents, and they have Netflix they share with us. And researching shows we liked to watch before we dropped DirecTV, we found you can watch a TON of shows for free on their website or app… channels like A&E, History, Nat Geo, Animal Planet, FYI, those are just the few I checked! Full episodes, legit free from actual channel, sometimes a day after they air, sometimes right away.
As far as the Kodi boxes, you can order them already installed or do it yourself, watch YouTube to learn. (Yes you can install on FireTv)Don’t fall for the $200+ scams out there though, you can order them $20-$50 straight from Amazon, same thing! Whether you do it yourself or buy them, it’s the same exact software you’re downloading. And it updates frequently. Sometimes it works great, sometimes barely works. And yes there is about any content you could possibly want, but not always good quality. And not usually legal. People who said that’s not what Kodi was designed for are correct. So that’s something to consider!
Sorry that was crazy long, we just dropped our stuff about a week ago & I looked into a lot beforehand. I encourage you to go for it, we have found free/cheap ways to watch anything we want & don’t miss it at all!
OK I am more confused now than before. I think I am a smart person, have a college degree, know 3 different languages and understand complicated things pretty fast. But talk to me about cable and all these new streaming devices, health insurance or how they itemized your cell phone bill and I have absolutely no clue what they are talking about. We pay $140 every month for just basic and expanded cable and Internet from COX and every month they go up. I want to find something simple but don’t know where to start.
U can order one of these Fully Loaded with Kodi. Go to myfirestick559.com … I bought mine off there. Works great. The people there are very helpful, customer service is great. I canceled my cable last month cuz all my shows are in Kodi. U pay one time and that’s it. I love it 🙂
Can you record as if you have a dvr, so you can watch your shows later
Just about all the shows and movies and prerecorded so I guess its kinda like having a dvr.
Be careful folks. What some people are proposing using the Firebox for is illegal. Adding additional software and streaming movies through apps installed on the box is illegal unless you own the movie or purchase the stream from a provider. Installing additional software will likely void the warranty on your new box plus it’s also illegal and could end you up with huge legal fees or behind bars. Just be careful when trying some of the ILLEGAL suggestions mentioned above. Everyone wants to cut their cable bill but not at the expense of jail time.
I have never heard of anyone doing jail time for using Kodi. Millions of people use it. My opinion, take advantage of it while u can. I’m sure it won’t last forever cuz of all the copyrighted streams it provides. I’m in no way an expert on this stuff, but I don’t think u can get into trouble by simply watching a movie or tv show. I think the folks who can get in trouble over Kodi are the ones who are uploading the copyrighted material on it, not the ones watching it. I could be wrong though.
I don’t know where the fault would lie on that but I suspect you’re right. Good luck prosecuting millions of people.
I would just like to add something about using Kodi. I used to be one of those people that downloaded music illegally and while I was never prosecuted my Internet provider would occasionally get reports of illegal downloading from my IP address and they would “quarantine” my IP address from accessing the Internet. I was by no means downloading large quantities of music (10 songs a month average) and the amount of time my Internet was quarantined would increase every time they got a report. At one point I lost my access for 24 hours. Plus I essentially gave my computer every known virus known to man. Just know that these things can and do happen when you download illegally. While they may not be able to prosecute everyone using Kodi they can fine you thousands of dollars. There’s no movie on this Earth that’s worth that time, energy, and money.
I’m going to give Fire TV a try. The reviews on the antenna aren’t great though. I’m skipping the bundle, but thanks for the post and everyone’s information
Very informative! You can also try something like this!
What app do u have to have to watch live tv
