Can I use this phone for wifi like a tablet without using it as a phone?

These kind of phones are so cheap because the company assumes they’ll recoup the money when you subscribe to their phone service, but you don’t have to do that. If you never activate a phone like this, it’s essentially just a small tablet. You’ll need wifi to use things that require data, but it does the same things as a tablet or fully activated phone. Maybe it’s too stingy for most people’s tastes, but I’ve made great use of phones like these. One of my favorites is popping in a memory card with some movies on it for the kids to watch in the car.

I’m just looking for something cheap to use with the Ibotta App.

If you have wifi this would work fine. It’s an android device, so it’s no different than a tablet other than a smaller screen and probably some preloaded junk software that comes with all phones.

Is this phone a good first phone for a teenager to have for emergencies?

    • David

The phone itself is fine, more than sufficient for emergencies. But honestly pretty much any phone out there is sufficient for emergencies. For most parts of the country, Verizon has the best coverage also. You may need to weigh the monthly cost of the plan you need with this vs other companies though because that’s likely to be a much bigger expense than the phone.

Thank you, David. Since I’m new at this, could you please give me some cheaper suggestions? We just need a phone which can text and make phone calls…nothing fancy. I also don’t want to pay $100 up front for a new phone. Thanks.

This phone would suffice then. Also there are $10 phones at dollar general with $15 monthly plans if you just need the bare minimum in texting and local phone calls

I may be reading wrong, but it looks like (from Verizon’s website) the cheapest plan for this phone is $50 a month prepaid. Am I wrong?

irelandsunshine Tracfone Alcatel Big Easy Plus Phone with 800 Minutes and 1 Year of Service These were selling on ebay for around $26.50 to $36.99 on Ebay over the past 3 months supplies have seem to have dried up though the remaining sellers are selling them overpriced at $53.99 and above. So regularly check ebay in case someone lists some lower again. One problem with the phone is that when in a pocket or purse it buttons get pushed and the phone dials without trying to.

Check into kroger iwireless. I pay $10 a month for my pre-teen and she has 100 minutes/texts a month which she never really uses up. Also any purchase made at kroger goes toward your bill/prepaid plan so there may be months you wont pay anything.

Hi, is this phone GSM unlocked to be used in other countries?

    • NolaGirl

      No. Verizon is CDMA.

  6. Cindy

Can I use this phone on a Verizon plan instead of my old flip phone?
