Ours hatched just fine, for what it’s worth. However, it hasn’t been touched by my 6 yr old since then. Luckily I paid $45 for it.

I read it yesterday. It’s all over social media that so many kids were disappointed. The biggest complaint is that they never hatched (some have been waiting since Christmas morning). People have been calling the customer service number and after being on hold for so long the call just drops. I’m so glad my son never asked for 1, and I feel really bad for those that paid way more for them from places like Ebay, etc. for it not to work.
My daughter’s didn’t hatch on Christmas. After 6 hours we just told her to help the Hatchimal hatch by pulling the pieces of the egg off since there was one hole in it near where the eyes were. The website says it should hatch in 40 minutes, but you may need to help with the process. She took care of it all those hours except she did get bored towards the last couple of hours. It is a cute idea and I wish that it had worked properly, but it didn’t seem to make her too sad. We paid retail for it at Target when they first released them. I’m so glad we bought early because I was not going to pay hundreds for it.
Ours didn’t hatch, we had to help it & when we got it out it does nothing so now I have to take it back 🙁
Good luck mist stores have said they are not accepting any returns on it and getting ahold of the company has been a nightmare for most
There’s a trick when it gets stuck in one of the levels to tap the bottom of it. My daughters kept going backwards in level and stopped with the tapping noise then she would tap the bottom repeatedly and helped the Hatchimal move forward. It hatched in less then an hour.
So many toys just don’t work as advertised or live up to the hype. I can’t imagine paying inflated eBay prices for stuff like this, or really anything super trendy since the price always comes down (and you get the benefit of reviews by first adopters). The toys that get the most playtime in our house are low-tech toys (like Minecraft minifigures, My Little Pony figures, or crayons, paper, tape, and glue) or–if we allowed unlimited use–high-tech not-really-toys (iPad, computer). These are sort of that in-between area: too expensive to really play hard with, too inexpensive to be high quality or well made. I’m rather suspicious of toys with too many “moving parts.” Crayola and Play-Doh “gadgets” tend to be a bust if you read reviews and/or have purchased a few. The base products are fine (crayons, markers, Play-Doh) but the gadgets are often just too ambitious for toys. Nerf’s another that is hirt-or-miss in my opinion. My daughter really wanted a bow, so I carefully researched Nerf bows (even returning one after reading exhaustive reviews). I hit on one that had great reviews (and a great sale price), but the bowstring was dry rotted out of the package. I knew I’d researched it, so I went back to reviews, only to find that it received awesome initial reviews, but terrible reviews after a month or more of ownership because of the string. Parents have to do a *lot* of research these days to avoid spending a fortune on a houseful of junk.

Ours took a really long time to hatch. Like 2 hours maybe. I gave up on it at one point because I thought it was defective. I decided to pick it up like 20 minutes later and love the heck out of it. It finally did after a looooonnnnggg time of my husband and I constantly talking and petting and sometimes manually turning it… the videos looks really easy, but ours was a diva.
Just be advised that there are news stories going around that many of these never hatched or don’t work, stores won’t return them once hatched (even if not working), and the company is not taking any customer service calls…you have to contact them via twitter.

The first time I saw this I thought they would be super cute for Easter… I am hoping by the spring they will all be on clearance and I can get several😋

Toys r us will not price match them even though their policy does not say it will not price match them. I got transferred to a manager and went no where with it. $80 is not worth it to me. Soon or later we will be able to get one in stores again.

I agree with Laura. My daughters hatched on Christmas night and she hasn’t stopped playing with it since. It plays music and moves around and we have to kindly tell her it cannot eat dinner with us. No disappointments here.

Ours took almost 4 hours of constant holding to hatch. We opened it at the start of our road trip and had 5 kids in the car to pass it around. If we were home I know this would not have kept her attention, but it was perfect being stuck in a car. I think some just take more cuddling to hatch and people aren’t willing to wait 4hours

They aren’t wanting to price match this….saying it is a promotional item due to limited quantities at other retailers.
I’ve seen all the news stories that they didn’t hatch properly and all. However I got one for my daughter(6yrs) and one for my niece(7yrs) from Target both for $67. Christmas Day they both hatched without a problem and both have been playing with them nonstop. I sat with my daughter for 30 min reading the instructions and making sure she did it right so it would hatch. I do feel that reading and following the instructions is very important to the whole process. Also the hatchimals turn on/off by turning it upside down. If you purchased it from eBay, amazon, etc they might have been mishandled causing it to not work properly.
Ours hatched in about an hour. I was holding and flipping the egg. It was cute but still not $65 cute. Ours makes a lot of noise. It thawed my grinch heart a little hahaha
We were another family who had a hatchimal that never turned on/hatched. Customer service so far has never led to a person and has disconnected 3 times– once it rang 10x and picked up saying “this number is not answering. You will now be disconnected”. 😂 what a joke.
Toys R Us price matched for me. It took two calls. The first representative said they wouldn’t price match and hung up on me. The second time I called the representative was very friendly and matched Target’s price. Thank you.
This was my Daughters favorite Christmas present. Totally worth the money. It hatched without a problem.
This toy is super cute and worth the $ if you really think about all the technology put into it. There is a very important step with removing the little turn keys on bottom that activates the battery. This is ONLY MENTIONED IN VIDEO- that they tell you to watch FIRST. I’m sure most families did not read all the instructions completely then watch the Youtube video (Christmas AM) to catch these set up steps which = all the holiday disappointments. My advice is to open up, take 30 minutes reading & watching everything and then allow about 45 minutes of time for it to hatch. It’s an amazing toy & process. My child loves the toy still since you can teach it all kinds of stuff but a 7-8 year old appreciates that more and is willing to work with it. HTH Happy New Year!

We got 3 hatchimals for my 3 daughters & only 2 out of 3 hatched. It wouldn’t turn on or light up. Luckily, the one that didn’t hatch was for my 2yrs old & she enjoyed holding the egg :). My 2 bigger girls still loves theirs & constantly plays with it.
On the phone with toy r us and they are saying they will not price match. Waiting for a manager now. I may hang up and just keep trying for a nicer representative.

Ha I keep reading all of these people were disappointed with this but our daughter loved hers. We got the owlicorn one and it hatched in about an hour. Our entire family interacts with it off and on throughout the day. We spent $40 though back in Oct not sure I would of spent $70. Really adorable toy though.

Hi all, thanks Colin for this!! I called at 11:30am Eastern Time with the number provided and a friendly staff member priced matched for me. Although $59.99 is a super great deal considering this time after the holidays, I just don’t like how in my credit situation I would have to pay full price for the match first and then receive the credit after. I know this is how all systems work but I just wish it was an easy transaction for me when I look at my credit card statement. This will be an awesome gift to ring in the new year. My friend’s egg took 6hrs to hatch and they had to do an emergency C-section on it while a friend of hers hatched fine. In all the kids were excited and these furry friends will be awesome for their stuffed animal collection that they receive on top of the bears and dolls.

I got one of the defective Hatchimals that wouldn’t hatch….the problem with mine was the hair on top of the Hatchimal was stuck in the little spinning mechanism at the top of the egg which was preventing it from hatching. I bought mine from Amazon and contacted them right away and let them know what had happened and they refunded my money without a problem but my daughter was very disappointed she never got to see it hatch. Seems like this company is a little sketchy!

My daughters hatchimals seemed slow at first and then went to sleep and couldn’t wake it up . So I decided to reinsert the 2 key like prongs it had at the bottom and it reset it and gave it new lifestyle it began to make noises and hatched just fine by end of day . And that’s because the first one hatched fast and my daughter took her time with this one ..For those who’s hatchimals doesn’t respond try doing this maybe it’ll work for you ,.

Our was hatched inside the box. My daughter was so upset on Christmas morning. I’ve also heard about ones that won’t hatch or their eyes won’t stop glowing red which means angry.
Nikki, that sounds just horrific! I would be scared to see the angry red eyes, I’m sure a kid would be terrified. :-/

I am so thankful we bought this from Amazon and paid retail price. Our hatchimal didn’t hatch and our little guy was super dissapointed. It was the only thing he wanted for Christmas. We got a refund today after spending countless hours on hold. Wishing we would have skipped it.

Our hatchimal hatched in about an hour. The only issue with ours was that we did have to help it hatch towards the end of the hatching process because it seemed to be off centered and some parts of the egg never got a peck. Our little 2 year old loves it and wakes up every morning asking for her purple hatchy:)
It is very unfortunate to hear that others had eggs that didn’t even hatch! I can only imagine how frustrating it is to try to get your money back! Wonder why there are so many that didn’t work? The hatchimals company needs to show they value their customers and make it right!
My daughters hatchimal didn’t want to watch either. It was very frustrating. We had to make an indention to get it out. Defeats the whole purpose of the hatchimal.
I bought one for my daughter before the craze back in October and saved it for Christmas. Christmas came and it was the one thing she wanted. It didn’t hatch. It did nothing. Thankfully she understood and I promised her another one. I pre ordered it on Monday and am now waiting for it to arrive. Hopefully it’ll be a good egg.
And we tried all the tricks online and nothing. It’s probably mummified in its egg.

We had two and ine hatched within a few hours and the other one took 24 hours of playing with it pretty consistently. I think you just have to be patient andbthats kind if the fun part for the kids. I don’t know anyone who had theirs hatch in 40 minutes.
My daughters hatched great. My sons did nothing and wouldn’t turn on. I stuck activation keys back in and twisted it a few times and that turned his on. Thinking we didn’t turn it enough times the first time.
I’m confused… why is toys r us selling them so high? 59.99 is the retail price! Got my via Best Buy for retail the end of November. It took a good while for the egg to hatch but it was super cute and both my daughter and son liked to look to see what he needed to do by the lighting of the eyes. My daughter is 9 and my son just turned 7 and I have to say that I cannot see a little child having the patience to hatch this thing. Since they hatched the other day… they really have not fooled with them since.
Spinmaster is selling them for 79.99 so I’m guessing Toys”R”us feels justified.

We got one for our 6year old daughter for Christmas. Very excited and happy we got it for under 50…..however it didn’t hatch on its own…my daughter was ok with helping the animal out and hasn’t put it down….all I can say is its just a furby in an egg and wouldn’t spend over 50!
