Help! What Is YOUR Favorite Air Freshener?
Check out this email from reader, Jaime…
HELP! I have two stinky teenagers, a man and a dog who live with me! Do you think you and your team could put something out there about which air freshener products people like best? Which work the best or have the strongest fragrances? Or which items are the best value for your money… whether it’s Bath & Body Works Wallflowers, Glade plug-ins, Wax melts or what?
Enjoyed reading the answers. Beware of the Wallflowers at Bath and Body Works. I have had the worst luck! One was knocked over, and completely removed the paint from my base boards. The fumes also made the paint bubble underneath cabinets in two spots, where I had them plugged in. The oil from the car freshners also spilled in my mom’s car and took off the finish.
They smelled great! However, I don’t chance it anymore.
Had a glade oil plug in fall over on my wood floor. It stained the wood.
Young Living’s Purification Oil!! All of the above reasons!! So long toxins! Good luck finding what’s best for you! π
I second the vinegar for smells. A few jars around the house got rid of smelly skunk after my grandfather shot one in his cellar.
Is Young Living only available online or are there any stores that sell it?
Glade and Febreze candles are great, but probably the thing that will help the most is opening windows and doors
Unless you live somewhere that’s either super hot, or super cold. In KC, there is only a small window each spring and fall where we can open the windows. π
For teenage boys have them take zinc everyday (pills or liquid in juice). My Mom used to have my 5 brothers take it daily and I forgot about it until I had a 13yr old. It really does work, takes about 5 days. I’ve had terrible luck with the Bath and Body Works plug ins. Invest in a diffuser (Lots of different kinds on Amazon) and a couple of essential oils (I use DoTerra purify, lavender, bergamot, wild orange) I run the one in my sons room several times a week. It also works for dog smells. You can find some different oil diffuser recipes online, to match up with the smells you like. Young Living Oils work well, also:)
Our teenage son adds 1 cup of ammonia to the washing machine– while it is filling with water, lets it sit for 1 hour, then starts it up. . . then his laundry comes out smelling much better! The smelly fragrance stuff for the air is hard for him. (allergies, etc. . ) The laundry fix has been huge!
Just FYI, all these products are very toxic and hormone disruptors. I didn’t use to mind them, now I can’t stand any artificial smells. they make me sneeze a lot and give me headaches.
I also have a teenage son, a dog and a husband…..I can vouch for Purification!!! I use it every single day. While I also diffuse it and other essential oils, I really like to make a room/fabric spray using 1.5 cups water, half a cup of witch hazel (can substitute rubbing alcohol or vinegar. Smell dissipates when it dries) and any combination of essential oils you’d like (10-15 drops). Shake and spray. AMAZING! and really works!!
I don’t buy conventional air fresheners because they are filled with chemicals. Also I only buy soy candles.
I usually just open the windows. And if we fry something, esp fish, I light up my caramel-scented candle from Bath and Body Works for a few minutes. I have never used a plug-in.
I simply use air wick apple cinnamon plug in. I like walking in the door and my house smelling fresh. I purchase at sams or BOGO at Publix.
My sister has 2 dogs and 2 cats her house always smells like she just cleaned…finally I asked her…”how do you keep your house smelling so clean?” She told me air wick. The end.
Don’t be hatin on me for sniffin my toxins. π
I don’t have anything new to add for room freshening but as the mother of a soccer goalie I do have a suggestion for cleats/shoes: equal parts peroxide and wintergreen alcohol sprayed inside shoes (and goalie gloves) works well. I’ve even found peroxide sold in a spray bottle at Walmart. Good luck!
Bath & Body works use to sell CREAMY NUTMEG in a small spray bottle & candle. My favorite! Hope some day they bring it back.
Sprays from yankee candle last the longest and the strongest. Wait for a sale quite expensive for a spray. Just a temporary fix also
I use a simple diffuser and a few drops of essential oils – right now I’m diffusing Young Living Thieves and Cinnamon Bark. My house smells wonderful (and I have a big hairy dog) and it’s super easy. The oils are a bit pricey but since I only use a few drops at a time they last quite a while. Diffusers are always on sale on Amazon.
I buy the little wax cubes from Wal-Mart (they’re $2 and come with 8). I have an electric wax melter. They’ll have your place smelling great, especially with the fall scents. (I want to try cupcake)
Natalie, I buy those at Walmart too, so cheap. Cupcake is a very yummy one, you’ll like it.
I love to diffuse oils, I love Purify from https://www.edensgarden.com/ and they offer free shipping all the time. π
Ionic air cleaner is my favorite.
I like Air Scense Lime air freshener. All natural essential oils, can lasts 3000 sprays, pump spray.
Love wax melts…bought my wax melter at Yankee Candle, but I’ve bought wax melts at the dollar store that smelled great. Just make sure you like the smell before you buy…also use fabric spray (febreeze) from dollar store everyday…works great…I too have stinky people and pets, lol
Two for one: buy a dwarf Meyer lemon tree (often on sale Aug-Sept at Home Depot) and keep indoors over winter. Te lemon flowers have a beautiful crisp, clean scent, and the lemons themselves smell and taste divine. We usually get about 12 large Meyer lemons a year, by picking off the excess flowers. No chemicals, brings outdoors inside over winter, and smells wonderful.
I like the air wick automatic spray air freshener. It lasts forever and smells so good/strong!
Mrs. Meyer’s room sprays are awesome, and a more natural instant solution. Smell great, not full of chemical, and a bottle lasts a long time.
