HELP! I have two stinky teenagers, a man and a dog who live with me! Do you think you and your team could put something out there about which air freshener products people like best? Which work the best or have the strongest fragrances? Or which items are the best value for your money… whether it’s Bath & Body Works Wallflowers, Glade plug-ins, Wax melts or what?

Please share!

Bath and body Works limoncello wallflower x

  2. Jessica

I love Febreeze candles. They always smell very fresh. Although many other candles smell nice, Febreeze is it for freshening.

  3. Taylor

Febrezd Heavy Duty!!!! Works miracles and the scent is not overwhelming. I use it near my son’s diaper genie because it’s powerful but doesn’t leave him sneezing.

  4. Bryn

A diffuser with the Purify essential oil from RMO/NAN makes my house smell sparkly clean.

  5. Amy

I feel your pain, I found Yankee Candle to have the most bang for scent. I usually will hit up the sales and buy the votive candles (they equal 2 tarts) cut them in half, and if I need an extra extra boost, I buy the same scent in the room spray and boy smell is gone.

  6. LeAnne

The Gain scented Febreeze melts are super strong even not warmed up. After awhile all plug ins seem to not work as well. Change your furnace filters more often if needed and always clean out your vacuum. Yankee Candle clean cotton and Midsummers Night are strong. Bath and Body works Mahogany Teakwood is strong too. Get some air circulating too and don’t let towels or clothes stay too damp before washing.

    • AP

Ditto on the gain febreeze melts. I used one last week in my basement family room (a large room). The room continued to smell like the wax melts for days. I finally put it away, and today it still smells like the wax melts. It’s been about a week. Unfortunately, I don’t like the smell very much. I normally like the smell of gain, but not in the wax melts. If you like it, it’s a strong, long-lasting sent.

  7. Beth

I use essential oils and a diffuser. Nothing toxic and really good for you. Worth the investment.

    • Another Michelle

Thank you for not contaminating our planet.

    • Jennifer

      Same here.

    • Beth

Agreed! Me, too, Beth. (This is another Beth….) I only use essential oils in my diffusers. For my stinky teen boys’ room, I also use a Sharper Image Air Purifier. It works wonderfully and there’s no toxic chemicals.

  8. Arianne

I love the Bath and Body Works “Room sprays”. They are currently 2 for $11. They pack a powerful punch and fills up a room with one spray or two for several hours.

    • Michelle

Yes these are the best air spray freshener so have ever found!!!!! Last forever… Stinky baby diapers are no match!!!!!

    • brdavis55

Wish they still sold Creamy Nutmeg though, my favorite!

  9. Mary

I don’t like the idea of spraying and breathing in toxic chemicals, if I can help it! Especially around the kiddos! Just my preference, but maybe try essential oils? Lots of great spray recipes on pinterest!

  10. moonsirena

I use yellow suavitel dryers sheets. I put them inside the closet, and drawers, in the dirty clothes bin, corners etc. Inside their shoes. It will absorb the moisture and smells too. I replace them every month. $1 @dollartree. I also put them inside the storage bins so everything is fresh when I need it. Good luck. It also keeps bugs away.

I also own a glade wax melt and I buy the wax on sale at target with coupons. Great for instant aromatherapy

  11. Nena

Purification oil from young living. Eliminates the works stink!!! A couple drops on cotton ball in my sons soccer cleats and we can all breathe again lol

  12. Jenni

    None!

  13. Jessica

The Lampe Berger cube. Use less expensive essential oils mixed with alcohol (you can google how to get it right) instead of spending a fortune on their brand. Burn for about 15-20 minutes, then the scent lasts pretty much all day. It’s $30 on amazon for the cube gift set.

    • Jess

What a great idea! I love my Lampe Berger!

  14. Kristie

You can also add a few drops of essential oils to your heating filter to spread your scent of choice through the whole house!

  15. art

I use deodorizer from Plant Therapy in my diffuser. I don’t really like it’s smell (it’s not unpleasant, it’s just not pleasant either…). After its done diffusing the house is odorless! I also put a few drops in my work shoes every now and then. For a pleasant scent I just pick out a few Plant Therapy oils and diffuse!

    • Jennifer

I put plain old cornstarch in my husband and kids shoes. It’s super cheap with no chemicals or scent and works like a charm!”

  16. Renee

The three wick candles from Bath and Body Works have the strongest scent – stronger than Yankee candles in my opinion. I stock up when they are on sale around the holidays and in summer.

    • Stephanie

Agreed! It still gives off a light scent days after blowing it out in small spaces.

  17. Stacy P

Definitely essential oil diffuser. It makes your whole house or living area smell so good. I get so many compliments when people walk in.

  18. Cherdh

I use Purification from Young Living. You don’t have to have a diffuser- it works as a room spray, laundry additive, simply on a cotton ball, etc. it is my go to for stinky shoes, dog linens, spraying to eliminate food and other odors. A little goes a LONG way.

  19. 4Ella

I put two-three drops of lavender essential oil on the vacuum filter and the house smells awesome after vacuuming.

  20. Kari

I love the Unstopables Fresh Pluggable Scented Oil Refill Air Freshener (blue) it is very strong but doesn’t give me a headache like some fragrances do! Also the wax melts sold at Walmart for $2 (I think the name is “Line Dried Linen”) it makes your house smell super clean! I have 2 dogs, 2 teenage boys, and a hardworking husband, I feel your pain 🙂

  21. JA

I’ll ditto what the others are saying and recommend essential oils and a diffuser. We use lavender the most. I don’t care for the blends. Heavy duty Febreze for shoes and the laundry basket if needed.

  22. j

Weekly I wash my teens blankets, sheets, laundry and pillows. I put a zippered cover over the mattress and there is a no storing shoes in the house rule. Also picked up some activated charcoal air fresheners for his bedroom. There is 95% improvement in stink. I used to just shut his door. Also, open curtains and blinds everyday and no food in their rooms. Dirty dishes and food garbage equals stink in a small bedroom!

  23. Emily

I have a dyson vacuum and I drop a few drops of essential oil on the filter before vacuuming. Wow it does an amazing job making the house smell good and the bonus is clean carpet at the same time!

  24. Kim

I love my essential oils! I use Young Living. They have a blend called purification. I use it for everything: stinky shoe spray, laundry that was left in the washer too long, mixed with baking soda for carpet deodorizer, mixed with lemon oil and diffused while cleaning, etc. It’s great for getting rid of stinkyness. Plus there is no toxic chemicals! I feel safe diffusing them around my kids and pets.

  25. Rob

The best air freshener that I have ever found is called Pure citrus. It smells like you took an orange headed half and put it directly up to your nose. You can find it at Walmart and Kmart I believe. Best odor killer I have found hands down.

  26. Ihearthip

I like the Walmart Mainstays room sprays. Pretty potent. Also I’ve found that if I rotate sprays every month or do, it keeps it “fresh.” Seems like we become desensitized to a fragrance after a while.

  27. Ihearthip

My favorite room deodorizer are Citrus Magic brand in Linen. They cost a bit more but don’t bother my nose like some others can.

  28. Sara

Air freshener have been proven to cause cancer. I use Plant therapy EO!

  29. Anthony

I indulge my candle addiction and hit up marshalls and Ross and just find random candles to burn in my house on the daily…

  30. Lana

    Hopewell Oils .com Purify.

  31. Grandma Cathy

I use Young Living Essential Oils, specifically Purification for stinky stuff. I just put a few drops on a cotton ball and stick in stinky shoes. Other oils smell yummy diffusing. And no toxic chemicals!

  32. kerri

One of the best is the yankee candle apple cinnamon. Its an oldie but a goodie.

  33. Sue

Glade auto spray. Set it at 36 minutes. One can lasts about 6 weeks! I use it in the room where the kitty litter box is.

  34. Ap

I have 3 large dogs, kids, and a construction worker husband. I feel your pain with smells!!! I use the wallflower from Bath and Body Works called ODOR ELIMINATING LAVENDER AND VANILLA. It’s amazing! You have to order it online though, the one in store is not odor eliminating. They carry other scents that have the odor eliminating (fresh cotton and brilliant citrus). I haven’t tried them though. Hth

    • AP

      Hey, that’s my handle!!! 🙂

  35. Holly Carstens

Another vote for Young Living purification! It is one of my favorite essential oils. Love them so much i became a distributor a few years ago!

  36. Luna

Oh I’ve got to say thanks for asking and posting about this! But none of the above have actually worked as I wished to except for the purification thing that many of the Hipsters have mentioned. I am yet to try the diy too. Please let us know if anything worked for you.

    • Mom2Trent

I make a room/fabric spray using 1.5 cups water, half a cup of witch hazel (can also use rubbing alcohol or vinegar) and any combination of essential oils you’d like (10/15 drops). Shake and spray. AMAZING! and really works!!

  37. Tracy

I don’t have an answer. Most I buy smell good then dissappear.

On a side note I would like to see more hip2save readers questions posted like this …

  38. Tammy

I use vinegar in a spray bottle. It neutralizes odors with no chemicals. The smell dissipates very fast.

  39. Jill

I suffered from severe headaches and finally realized it was from my artificial candles and sprays! If I really want a nice smell in my home. I put cut up apples, oranges and cinnamon on the stove.

check out young living! they have so many wonderfully helpful and good for you essential oils! you can DIY your own candles that are good for your family and lots of other easy affordable DIY products for your home! I just made laundry detergent and it was so easy quick and cheap! next up toothpaste and candles!

  41. Shelly

I don’t think anything beats a Lampe Berger oil burning lamp with Lampe Berger oil at removing and killing odors. I have had excellent experience buying on ebay. I have used all kinds of candles, febreeze, simmering on the stove, etc. and it all helps mask, but the Lampe Berger is the only thing that has worked at eliminating the boy “funk”. Even if you don’t like strong scents, they have a Neutral oil or wonderful clean scents like Lemon Bubbles that you can even “cut” with 90% rubbing alcohol.

    • Agnes

I am curious about young oil but I can’t justify $75 for 5 milliliter of it

      • Mary

Try plant therapy!! High quality oils and great customer service. According to the comparison chart, PT deodorizing is similar to YL purify, but at 1/3 the price! I have used deodorizing oil in my laundr and liked it!

        • Nana Donna 2 6

I ditto the use/support of purchasing Plant Therapy EO. Free shipping and great customer service. They also have specific blends that are kid friendly… let them do the science of combining the oils at a fraction of the cost of other companies. Check them out for yourself.

  42. Jamie

Pet Odor Eliminator Candle. Just google that. Any of those candles work! I work for a county Animal Control Facility and those candles work magic(we use candle warmers). Burn one in your house and it gets rid of any and all odors. I swear by them.

  43. MMS

I am hooked on Pink Zebra Sprinkles! They are soy based and non-toxic to humans and pets. They come in a variety of scents, from outdoorsy, to perfumey, to food smells…and even some for men. You melt them in a warmer, like you would with wax melts, except they’re like little pellets and they come in a jar. I have an electric counter top warmer and a warmer that plugs into an outlet, and keep both of them going with my favorite scents. You can find the webpage by Googling Pink Zebra. (‘m not a dealer or anything, just love them.) My favorite scent is Beautiful Woman, but right now I’ve Winter Woods in my burners.

  44. Sondra L.

I love putting a Tablespoon of vanilla extract a few sprigs of rosemary and some lemon juice (1/4 C) together with 2 cups of water on the stove and letting it simmer. It’ll smell just like pottery barn.

  45. Tara

Febreeze noticeable plug ins..Hawaiian aloha is my fav and cranberry which is only seasonal I think..I stick up at xmas. I usually use a set and refresh in the same scent in my laundry room or bathroom

  46. TEAH

For an air freshener I think Zero Odor works really well. It’s very expensive but I found it dirt cheap on clearance and tried it. I like it because it doesn’t smell like anything, just deodorizes. What I have been doing for garbage cans and our compost pail as well as musty coolers, is wipe them down with cheap vanilla extract and a paper towel and leave the paper towel in the bin. Also I freeze our orange peelings and if the kitchen has lingering odors from cooking I simmer them on the stove with white vinegar.

  47. Allison

I’ll leave a little cup of vinegar hidden, after a couple of minutes you don’t smell the vinegar and absorbs smells. Especially in the boys bathroom!

  48. Ashley

Purification was the very first essential oil I bought from Young Living for this very reason! I told my friend if you have an oil for stinky teenage boy + dog smell, I’ll take it! Now I diffuse many different ones but purification is still my go-to for bad odors.

  49. angeld001

If you have a furnace and use filters, check your local hardware store for scent pads that can be placed along with your furnace filter. They are usually in the same aisle as the filters. We usually use the lavender one. They work really well.

    • AP

I’ve gotten them at Kmart and Walmart too.
