If you’ve signed up for mobile Garden offers in the past, text STOP to 57227 and then sign up again.

3. Subscribe to Style & Decor emails to save 10%.

Whenever you subscribe to Style & Decor emails from The Home Depot, you will get an offer for 10% off your online purchase of select furniture, home accents, bedding, and bath products whenever you sign up (valid for two weeks after signing up). You can also request The Home Depot Decor Catalog for home decorating ideas and inspiration.

4. Sign up for PRO Alerts for yet another coupon.

If you’re running a business (technically anyone can sign up), you can get another Home Depot coupon for $5 off $50 in-store purchase coupon by subscribing to The Home Depot PRO Alerts!

Hip Tip – Basically, you should never shop at The Home Depot store without a $5 off $50 Home Depot coupon in tow, since you can use them on Clearance items and there are lots of easy ways to score these coupons (see the tips above!)!

5. Take advantage of the Low Price Guarantee.

home depot sealy topper

For in-store purchases, if you find a current lower price on an identical, in-stock item from any retailer, The Home Depot will match the price – just bring the ad, printout, or photo with you to the register for validation. Note that this guarantee excludes seasonal, discontinued, obsolete, clearance, distressed, or going-out-of-business sale merchandise and other exclusions listed here.

For online purchases, HomeDepot.com will match the price of items plus shipping costs. However, the price match items must be available from the competitor to ship to your location.

6. Scope out the clearance sections first.

When heading in-store, be sure to browse through the clearance sections in various departments of the store for discounts 75-80% off or more (these items will be marked with yellow tags). Also, be sure to look for Reduced Tag Savings with 10% discounts on top! These items are usually floor models or store-return items in workable condition but may have a missing part or small flaw.

Also, be sure to look for Reduced Tag Savings with 10% discounts on top! These items are usually floor models or store-return items in workable condition but may have a missing part or small flaw.

If you can live with the defect or know how to fix things yourself at a fraction of the cost, you’ll get a really great deal PLUS you can always ask for a possible further discount from a manager.

7. Know how to read the yellow price tags.

Rumor has it that clearance prices ending in $.06 indicate that these items have hit their second markdown cycle and have six weeks left until the next price change, while clearance prices ending in $.03 indicate a final price reduction. If these items don’t sell within three weeks from when the yellow tag was first printed, they may be pulled from the shelves and donated to charitable organizations.

However, many times these items are left on the clearance racks for sale, so if you find these items at your store, you can usually score fantastic savings!

8. Return your dead perennials, trees, and shrubs.

Can’t keep plants alive? No worries! The Home Depot offers a 1-year guarantee on perennials, trees, and shrubs so if your plant dies within the first year of planting it, you can actually dig it up and bring it in-store for a replacement or refund.

If you purchase these items online (including, but not limited to, houseplants, perennials, trees, holiday trees, wreaths and garlands) and they arrive damaged or dead, be sure to contact Customer Support at 1-800-430-3376 within three days of delivery and they will ship a replacement at no charge. This policy does not apply to cut flowers or floral arrangements.

Also, whenever you use Bonnie plants with Miracle-Gro soils and/or plant foods, The Home Depot guarantees you’ll get a harvest! If your Bonnie plants do not produce in the course of the growing season (March – October), you are entitled to a refund for your plant and Miracle-Gro purchase. For a list of all eligible Bonnie Harvest Guarantee products, click here.

Hip Tip – Usually toward the end of the summer, you can find racks in the Garden Center with plants that are wilted or not as pretty as others for a fraction of the cost. The 1-year guarantee still applies! Don’t hesitate to buy these plants, as you’ll save a bundle and can return it if it dies.

9. Save 70% on wood scraps for small projects.

Need a small piece of wood for an upcoming project but don’t want to purchase an entire piece of lumber at full price for it? Locate the Cull Lumber rack at The Home Depot where you may be able to find pieces of wood marked with purple paint, which may be up to an additional 70% off at checkout!

Keep in mind that cull lumber are pieces of wood that are usually leftovers from a previous customer or may possibly be damaged. But if you’re just repairing a small section of a dog house sitting out in the backyard and likely to get chewed up in the future, it may be just what you need, right?

10. Know what things to buy (and what to avoid).

According to Money.com, some of the best things to buy at The Home Depot are Behr paint, patio furniture, lighting and ceiling fan fixtures, LED light bulbs, plants, Char-broil gas grills, and more.

However, some of the worst things to buy include wall and home decor, cleaning supplies, kitchen accessories, Glidden paint, Brinkmann grills, Home Legend flooring, select humidifiers, and HDX paper towels.

11. Shop the special buys for BIG savings.

Keep your eyes peeled for various special promotions throughout the store and also online, where you can get a free accessory or item whenever you purchase a qualifying product. If you’re shopping for Father’s Day or just looking to add to your tool collection, this is a great time to shop and save.

12. Moving? Save 10-20% on Penske rental trucks.

Whenever you book your One-Way reservation online with Penske, you’ll save an additional 10% off and get free, unlimited miles on one-way truck rental reservations. Even better, add your AAA member discount or military discount and you can save 12% off all one-way and local truck rentals!

Every moving truck comes equipped with automatic transmission, anti-lock brakes for safer stops, air conditioning, AM/FM radio, AUX or USB input, power steering, cargo tie rails, dual-faced mirrors for better vision, rear roll-up door, translucent roof and cargo lighting, and non-slip wooden floors.

13. Rent tools for odd projects before buying.

With hundreds of tools and equipment available to rent at The Home Depot, they’ll likely have what you need without making a large “one-time-use” purchase. Whether you’re in the middle of a home remodel or landscaping project, you can easily rent tools by the hour, day, week, or month, so it’s worth checking The Home Depot’s inventory and rental rates to see if they have what you need.

Also, before buying brand new, considering purchasing their professional-quality used tools for a fraction of the cost! They leverage the professional-grade tools that cycle through their rental program and sell them while still in good, working condition. Though slightly used, these tools have been serviced between each rental to assure performance quality. Note that these items are sold “as-is.”

14. Shop the 1-Day Only online sales.

Every day, HomeDepot.com offers different 1-day Online-Only Sales on select items – such as door hardware, ceiling fans, kitchen accessories, and more. Even sweeter, all 1-day sale items qualify for free shipping to your home (regularly free on $49 orders), so it’s a great time to shop!

Plus, when shopping online, don’t overlook the Overstock section and New Lower Price items to save even more.

15. Check the online rebate center.

Before making a large purchase, such as a major appliance, be sure to visit The Home Depot’s online rebate center to see what offers are available. You can easily search by typing in what you’re looking for and may find rebates for free products by mail, prepaid debit cards with purchase, and more.

Also, participating stores will offer a 11% rebate match for purchases made in a Home Depot store to match the Menards 11% rebate sale (receipt required)! Check to see if your store is participating.

16. Get a 10% military discount in-store.

The Home Depot offers an everyday 10% Military Discount on items sold and stocked in-store only. However, this policy may vary by store, so be sure to contact your local store for their policy.

  • All active, reserve, retired, or disabled military personnel and their immediate family members are eligible for a 10% discount every day of the year with a valid military or current dependent ID.

To redeem the discount in-store, show the valid military ID to a store associate when inquiring about the discount. Note that the discount cannot be used toward lumber, building materials, and select products.

17. Pick up a mover’s packet for possible savings.

Keep your eyes peeled for possible Lowe’s coupons in the USPS Mover’s Guide found at your local post office. Because of The Home Depot’s low-price guarantee, most stores will accept competitor coupons, such as Lowe’s coupons. Remember this may be up to the discretion of each store, so call ahead before making a special trip with your coupon in tow.

Bonus: You may even be able to find occasional coupon booklets for various P&G products!

18. Register for FREE workshops.

The Home Depot offers FREE DIY Workshops for people of all ages and experience levels where you can learn about various topics, such as organic gardening, how to tile your backsplash, and more. Registration is required so be sure to secure a spot in advance.

Also, all kids who attend get to keep their project and receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a workshop apron, and a commemorative pin (while supplies last). Children must be present at the store to participate in the workshop and receive the freebies. My kids have always loved these workshops!

Register for the following workshops:

  • Do-It-Yourself workshops help anyone kick off their project with confidence through expert instruction reference materials.
  • Do-It-Herself workshops mix demos and hands-on learning to help women tackle a variety of home improvement projects.
  • Kids workshops provide a lively environment mixing skill-building, creativity, and safety for future DIYers.

19. Save painting projects for holiday weekends.

One of the best times to purchase paint is during a holiday (like Memorial Day or Fourth of July), as they often offer $10 off one-Gallon Paint Cans and $40 off 5-Gallon Paint buckets after rebate!

Also, if you’re not set on a specific paint color, be sure to check out the “Oops” paint section in-store. You’ll often find big savings on cans of paint that were either brought back by a customer or weren’t mixed well by the paint technician and ended up being the wrong color. It’s a great way to save on paint!

20. Government workers are tax-exempt.

The Home Depot also allows businesses with a valid state-issued tax exemption to purchase products without paying sales tax on exempted items. However, before your business can purchase products without paying sales tax, you will need to complete an online application process that registers your business for the tax exemption and allows you to create a special Home Depot tax exempt ID number.

Once you complete this process and receive your ID number, you can use your tax exemption at Home Depot stores immediately. Tax-exempt shoppers may include teachers and members of charitable and religious organizations IF they are registered with The Home Depot.

21. Buy discounted gift cards before shopping.

One way to save on your home repair purchases is to buy a discounted Home Depot gift card on Raise.com! You can also occasionally purchase discounted The Home Depot retail gift cards on sites like eBay and Amazon, but these deals often go fast and don’t last long. Be sure to check your local grocery store or pharmacy for gift card promotions during the holidays.

22. Consider the Home Depot Credit Card.

If you shop at The Home Depot often or if you’re planning to make multiple major purchases and want time to pay them off without accruing any interest, consider signing up for The Home Depot credit card. Unlike many store credit cards, you won’t earn rewards or discounts for making purchases with it, but the card does offer six months of deferred interest on purchases of $299 or more.

Also, cardholders will get a full year to make returns, compared to only 90 days for non-cardholders. Plus, be sure to watch for promotional offers for new cardholders valid on your first purchase, such as $25 off your first purchase of $25, or $100 off your first purchase of $1,000+.

Thank you so much this is so helpful!

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

      You are so welcome Jer!

  2. Joyce

Anybody know of any great Kingsford charcoal sales coming up for Memorial Day? Anywhere – not necessarily Home Depot.

    • Tonia

Home Depot and Lowes usually ( past two years they did) have the double pack Kingsford charcoal for $9.98. Sale should start soon; maybe tomorrow in anticipation of Memorial Day.

  3. Rcvmeg

What’s the best time to buy refrigerator and washer/ dryer? How to get the best deak with coupons or other offers?
Home Depot or lowes which gives good deal on appliances?

    • Tracy

I was wondering the same thing. About to move to new house and I need them

      • melanieeee

Just bought my mother a refrigerator at Lowe’s free delivery with in 75 miles and was $15 for them to take the old one. Plus used my military discount. I would of preferred home Depot but manager would not give the 10% military discount, said his hands were tied since it was on sale and the manufacturer doesn’t allow double dipping a sale and military discount said it’s a new rule. But I get all my paint at home Depot.

        • riss

That’s why I like going to Lowe’s over HD. Lowe’s give military discount even on sale items πŸ™‚

    • K

Per our contractor, there’s awesome sales 4x a year – I believe 4th of July is the next one. We bought an appliance suite for a new build in April (Earth Day sales) and scored 47% savings on an LG package at Lowes. They run sales, issue rebates if you buy a certain number of appliances, you can price match against other stores, and very easily can find coupon codes for 10% online. We also used Ebates and took advantage of 5% Discover cash back

    • Rebecca

We just asked this same question to someone we know that works at Home Depot. They said that the Memorial Day sales are some of the best times to purchase appliances. We are actually ordering our fridge from there tonight. Unfortunately Home Depot doesn’t provide discounts with Ebates anymore πŸ™

    • Kristen

And don’t forget to check Consumer Reports if you have access to see the best quality appliances! πŸ™‚

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

When we were buying a washing machine, we were told that one of the best times to buy were during the holiday weekends, like 4th of July, Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day etc. Also October and December are good months as this is usually when manufacturers unveil their latest models. Hope that helps!

If you’re going to buy a lot of appliances, you can do a bulk order with Home Depot or Lowe’s. You can also just ask them to quote it for you so you’re not even committed if you ask them to do it. We did that at Lowe’s and we saved a ton. It also helps to compare prices. We were going to order from Home Depot initially, but my husband ended up going to Lowe’s to ask for a quote and they not only gave us bulk pricing, but also price matched Home Depot’s prices. And there was some sale going on with rebates so we got $300 back too.

      • Rhonda

While my parents got a great deal on appliances from Lowes, the delivery was awful. They rescheduled 4 times which made them waste many hours waiting around. They ordered late November and the appliances were delivered a few days before Christmas.

        • Deb

My kids had a similar delivery experience. Plus most pieces were dented then had to be reordered. Another long wait!

    • rcv meg

Thanks all for the wonderful tips..it would help me to shop around better πŸ™‚

    • Elizabeth

Right now will probably be a good time. Memorial day sales. FYI, for the few of you that live in Texas, Memorial Day weekend S-M, is tax free on some appliances that are Energy Star. Ex. Refrigerator under $2000, ceiling fans, dishwasher, etc. Look it up for details. I’ll be looking to buy during that time, plus, there are usually decent sales at this time.

  4. JC

I love Home Depot. In December 2015 They marked down a really nice refrigerator (stainless steel, french doors, bottom freezer, filtered water/ice dispenser, name brand) to $599 online and I snapped it up. Turns out it was a pricing mistake. They emailed me and said so, but agreed to honor the posted price.

  5. dblD-amber

I HAVE bought many gallons of Behr paint for about $5 That normally sell for 50.on the oops rack Even of its a shade off they can usually make it darket

  6. Daniel Garber

Cashiers are also “empowered” to mark items down up to $50. For example, if you go in looking to buy a particular model but it is out of stock but a better model is in stock, the better model can be reduced up to $50 without manager approval.

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

Thanks for the tip Daniel! πŸ™‚

  7. Daniel Garber

Also, most stores will give 10% discount for using the HD credit card.

  8. jaci

Sears also has good deals on appliances free delivery and setup with Sears card. Sears outlet online deep discounts if you can look past oops stuff.

    • Cathy

They don’t honor “any” other retailer for price matching. It varies by store. My store will only match Lowes.

      • Daniel Garber

        Most honor comparable retailers.

        • E4

Sears has the worst customer service. We were waiting for our fridge for 3 months. πŸ™

    • Laura

Plus many times you’ll earn points buying your items at Sears and they often times have coupons for appliances πŸ™‚

  9. Chris

Anyone know if you can use more than one $5 off $50 purchase coupon at a time? I figure you probably can’t use two of them if you only spend $50 but say you spend a $100 at one time… can you use two $5 off coupons on one purchase for every $50 you spend?

    • Daniel Garber

      One per transaction.

    • Daniel Garber

They will take competitor coupons as well (i.e. Lowes)

  10. Dee

If your HD has a gas station, remember to scan your HD gas rebate card for purchase points that will add up to lowering the price of your gas the next time you need to fill up.

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

      Great tip! Thanks Dee!

  11. Terri Fisher

Great post! We actually just bought a pool last fall and financed it through the home depot card because they priced match an online price and gave me the 18 months no finance charges. We got a great deal and did not need to open up another charge account somewhere else. You get coupons almost monthly for 10% off or extra long financing with your HD credit card. We are waiting for another good coupon and will buy our hot tub there too!

  12. Laura

I had no idea about the Cull lumber or the oops paint and holiday paint deals. I remember once they had a $10 rebate but couldn’t remember the time of year. Any upcoming paint deals?

  13. Amanda S.

Wood scraps at Lowe’s is 100% free πŸ™‚ They will even cut it the size you want: they charge 25 cents per cut, but most will just do it for free rather than ring up such a small amount. This is how I do all my wood decor projects!

    • Amy

Amanda – Thanks for sharing that tip! I’m going to check it out.

    • Daniel Garber

The HD cull lumber is not scraps. It’s pieces that have minor damage or are bent. Scraps are free at HD as well.

      • Laura

Where are the scraps located? Right next to lumber or moved to a different clearance area?

        • Daniel Garber

our location has a big box next to the saw.

    • Cat

Okay so I’m not getting scraps free at either store. My Lowes bundles them up in HUGE bundles and charges a lot for the whole bundle.

      • Daniel Garber

The cull lumber at home depo is a really good deal. Very often it’s barely damaged/warped. My HD has cabinet grade plywood in cull on a regular basis. The damage can easily be cut out.

  14. Marylynn

Lowes coupons are always worth more. They do $10 or $15 off $50. You just have to be good at searching them out online.

    • Daniel Garber

you can buy them on eBay dirt cheap.

      • melissa

I buy them all the time on eBay. Although right now no one seems to be selling them so cheap like usually.

        • Daniel Garber

I buy the Lowes coupons and HD will match it.

  15. Kiwi

I love the oops paint! I will work around that in any room.

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

      πŸ˜€

  16. Lyndi

They have an unadvertised 11% rebate in the form of a store gift card at the same time that Menards offers the 11% rebate at their stores. Just google Home Depot 11% rebate. We have done this several times and it’s great!!

    • Deb

We did this with our kitchen appliances and got a nice sized Home Depot gift card in the mail not long after. This is the way to go. I was waiting to see if anyone was going to comment on the Menards 11%.

    • Daniel Garber

That’s great! Wish it were in all states.

    • Cleob

I am also glad you mentioned the 11% matching rebate at participating Home Depot locations. We do this all the time.
Menards has 11% rebate this week, so save all your Home Depot receipts this week and submit online https://www.homedepotrebates11percent.com/#/home. Sometimes we find receipts in empty shopping carts or on the grounds by the garden center, and use them as well.

  17. Karen

Home Depot is also very good at donating to non profits. They have donated items to our Vacation Bible School many times. Aprons, kids projects, paint. Ask at the customer service desk. They have been great to work with.

    • Daniel Garber

They also do lots of community service. Our local HD has built fences, painted houses/buildings etc, for the community.

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

Wow that’s awesome Karen! And thanks for all the helpful comments Daniel πŸ™‚

  18. Daniel Garber

πŸ˜‚ no worries, let me know if you want me to shut up, haha.

    • Karen

Wow! Thank you for all your helpful advice!!

  19. maya

I know its of topic but does anyone has Crazy 8 coupon code ? Please email me at sulehri7867@hotmail.com thanks

  20. CW

Re: plants from Home Depot. We bought about 30 pieces of sod. 4 didn’t “take”. My husband took it back and they exchanged the sod for better sod

  21. Amanda

The one day sales link doesn’t work 😿

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Hmm, It is working for me as I click through. Are you able to try it in a different browser?

  22. Wendy

Our home depot will not give military discount if the item is on sale. Its one or the other. Lowes will do sale price plus military discount. We got a Bosch dishwasher on sale for $900+ 10% off + $100 rebate at Lowes!!

  23. Joan

AND, in regards to the paint, if there is a rebate, sometimes you can spend the $5 – 10 for an oops color and get your rebate on it too, which means they pay you to take it home. I use that paint for my art projects!

  24. Lacey

I’ve gotten so many good deals on their one day sales!!! Bundles of furnace filters, smoke detectors, rain barrels, even our dishwasher!
Thanks for posting them Colin! So much appreciated – not by my UPS driver though πŸ˜‰

  25. bryn1982

Does anyone know if the usps movers packets have actual 10% off lowes cards in them. HD said they do not take printed lowes coupons it has to be actual ones.

  26. Ian

Beware of buying discounted gift cards. People are selling store credits to raise.com and Store credits with Home Depot are tied to Ids
