Are you ready for the solar eclipse? ☀️ 🌚 🕶

The countdown is on to the much anticipated August 21st solar eclipse – we are actually going to experience the total eclipse in many locations here in Idaho!

Do you have the right eye protection?

If you plan to view the eclipse, it’s important that you have the right eye protection as looking directly at the eclipse can cause serious damage to your eyes! According to NASA, unsafe eclipse glasses are being sold in the United States so it is super important that you look for an “ISO” Icon with reference 12312-2 on the glasses. NASA recommends buying from one of the following five companies to ensure truly safe glasses: American Paper Optics, Baader Planetarium (AstroSolar Silver/Gold film only), Rainbow Symphony, Thousand Oaks Optical, and TSE 17. See NASA safety info here for more information.

*UPDATE: You can now grab a 10-Pack of FOUMECH Solar Eclipse Glasses CE and ISO Certified for only $6.99 – just 70¢ each!

As an idea, head over to Amazon.com and grab this 10-Pack of Soluna Solar Eclipse Glasses for just $17.95 – that’s just $1.80 each. These glasses are both ISO and CE certified for safe viewing.

      Thanks for the heads up!

      • Yar

Thank you, I was thinking of buying some. Its truly a great experience to watch a solar eclipse, I have watched 2 trough out my life, several lunar eclipse and meteor showers! I would recommend to look into the local planetarium as they held free or close to free on events like the up coming solar eclipse! Also check the NASA website for time lines and what percentage of the eclipse your state will be able to experience!

Walmart, every convenience store, bank, library and business in the southern Illinois area are selling them for $1 each here.

    • Aleshia

I can’t believe they are selling them! I contacted my library in TX and she told me that she is surprised these libraries are taking advantage of people. The library was sent these glasses for free to hand out to people.

      • Aleshia

Not every library is selling them. I called the one in my sisters area and they are free. She is going to go pick some up and mail them to me! Thank you for the heads up.

    • Christine B

Yah I’ve seen them all over down here in southern Illinois ,however one walmart in our area is completely out of them.

      • Bobbi

I’m in soIL too. It’s Eclipse everything here, huh? 🙂

  7. redsoxgirl

I bought a 5 pack on Amazon, and now our local grocery store and Lowes has them.

  8. Beth

    • AP

Yep! I’m in KC too, and looking forward to it!!!

  9. Cari

Check out your local library and/or city hall. Our local library is selling glasses for a $1. So are other local city hall in the area.

  10. Deneene Miller

My eye doctor’s office was handing them out for free so worth checking into.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Sweet! Thanks for the tip!

  11. Allison 💙

Our library has a “how to view the August eclipse” program the week before, and they’re giving out free glasses too! 🤓

  12. KT

There is a 12 pack for $11.87 as a lightning deal right now.

    • liz

    • Mourrene

August 21 is my birthday too! I’m so excited! I feel so special that it’s happening on the day I was born….😊🙃🎉

      • a. rich

My sons too, we are excited to watch it from the highest point in Ga!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      How cool! Happy Birthday! 😀

  14. Shannon

My library is giving them away for free!

  15. Traci

My kids will be in school during the entire viewable time. I’m hoping the school seizes the opportunity.

    • Kiwi

The county I work at has cancelled class that day! No other country has that I know of by is though.

    • Brandy

I teach 5th grade and we are planning our first unit around the eclipse–but I HAVE called the local libraries and they won’t give class sets of the glasses. I can’t afford three class sets so I’m hoping to find a way around this! We WILL be making this happen.

  16. Amy

Not only are we going to watch the eclipse from Oregon, headed to Reno afterwards ;).

    BRING ON VACATION WEEK! 😀

    • anna

where in oregon? That is where we live and they are saying our town in expected to get an extra 500k people. The little airport here is making adjustments to fly in a 737. haha I might stay home.

    • Kathy

My daughter and friends are flying up to Portland for it. Wish I was going with, but I’ll enjoy however much of an eclipse we get here in L.A.

  17. Maggie

Headed to Nebraska to get into the path of totality!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Cool find! Thanks for sharing!

  18. PDX To OGG Mama

Check your your kids schools too…our relatives school districts in TN are giving them to each student.

  19. linda

My local library said the kids will be getting them from school. And adults can pick up for free at library.

  20. Suzanne H

Going from VA to SC in order to get into the 100% zone!

  21. cucumbers787

i got one from the maker fair

  22. PDX To OGG Mama

Oh, my 2 cents, I purchased the Thousand Oaks brand. I purchased last month after reading reviews and what was approved by NASA, etc. Thousand Oaks also makes highly rated telescope filters. I purchased the solar filter observation cards (1″x4″ filter window, 3″x5″ card frame) instead of the paper glasses.

  23. Barbara

Hoping we get an awesome show here in South Carolina… Schools here are closed that day as well! Apparently we’re right in the path! I was just talking today about getting glasses for us!!

  24. Amber

My husband is taking two of my children to Lincoln NE to go to one of the 100% zones! (and mommy gets a couple days to herself with the younger ones 🙂

  25. Ms. Frizzle

We got our solar glasses free in the 4th of July parade. The library float threw them out.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for the heads up Kari!

  26. Jackie

Our local library has them for free. I already went there last week and got one for each member of my family. Question- my kids have school that day. I’m debating if I should have them home so we can all enjoy the eclipse together. We are in KC also so we will have the full eclipse

  27. Marie

Driving 9 hrs to Nashville to get in the path of totality!

  28. holly

The 6.99 on Amazon just sold out as I added them to my cart. Darn.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Bummer! Thanks for letting us know!

  29. Heather

I found this cool website the other day!! There are over 2 million free glasses being distributed at over 4,800+ libraries. Click on the link below to view a map of participating locations near you. We were excited to discover our little tiny library just 2 miles down the road has them! Yay!
