4.) Download Free Fitness Apps

Try one of these to get you moving:

Hip Tip – Did you know that there are quite a few Free Fitness Apps available that also offer rewards just for being healthy? Check them out here.

5.) Check Your Cable TV Channels

Did you know that if you have On Demand programming as part of your cable TV package, you most likely have access to FREE exercise programs from Exercise TV? Exercise TV provides a wide range of exercise programs, including yoga, Pilates, stretching, walking, strength training, along with abs and cardio workouts. There are programs for every fitness level from beginner to advanced.

If you have a Roku or Apple TV Streaming Media Player, you can access Free exercise channels as well! Go here to see a list of Free Fitness Channels available for your Roku (most are same for Apple TV).

6.) Attend Free Classes at Your Local Library

Check with your local library for possible exercise DVDs that you can check out for exercising at home. Plus, some libraries offer Free Fitness classes, so be sure to check the schedule or call your local library. As just an idea, this public library offers a Free “Walk On” Class that is open to the public.

7.) Take Advantage of Free Gym Passes

Most large gyms and yoga studios offer visitors the chance to try before you sign up. Not only will you get to workout for Free for a limited time, but the facility will be eager to keep your business. If you decide to become a paid member, there are often special discounts or deals whenever you sign up.

8.) Use What You Have at Home… Free (Including Kids!)

You can get a crazy good workout using things you already have at home – like canned goods, couches, stairs, jump ropes, chairs, hula hoops and even your own babies/toddlers! 😀 Here are just a few household items you can use to get a great workout without paying hefty gym fees…

  • Stairs – These are great for running up and down or doing calf raises on the edge
  • Wall – Use any wall to do a timed wall sit…your thighs will love you!
  • Jump Ropes – Using a jump rope as intended will get your heart rate up!
  • Broom – Lay a broom on the ground and jump over it side to side
  • Canned Goods – Use soup cans for shoulder presses
  • Hula Hoop – Place it on the ground and jump in and out of the hoop, going around the circle
  • Chair – Perfect for doing arm dips – your triceps will feel the burn!
  • Kitchen Counter – Great for doing narrow pushups!
  • Babies/Toddlers – Kids love being part of the exercise and they make great “weights”

You can also hunt for Free fitness equipment and make your own “gym” at home. You may be able to find items on Craigslist or on a local Facebook group where members gift things they no longer want.

9.) Take Advantage of Your Free Corporate Gym

If you work at a place that has a Free gym on site (such as General Mills, Facebook, Verizon Wireless, ExxonMobil, Chick-fil-A and others), why not USE IT?! Instead of going out to eat on your lunch break, consider spending half of that time breaking a little sweat and the other half eating a healthy meal.

I get outside at 6:00am in the summer and walk/run (the sky’s awake, so I’m awake– thank you “Frozen”) and use Jessica Smith TV in the winter/when the sun isn’t up as early. I love Jessica – hundreds of videos of varying exercise degrees and workout lengths. She’s encouraging but not overboard.

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

Wow – good for you, Amber! Glad to hear you like Jessica Smith TV (and Frozen LOL 😉 ).

    • rcv meg

Yes Amber.. i do love Jessica’s workouts. I was able to loose about 20 pounds using her videos and a good diet …:)

      • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

        Congrats! So awesome!

Very helpful post! I’m in the baby/toddler/marriage/work/more/life is too busy to breathe and so I’m stress eating junk phase, but I’m thinking I need to incorporate 5 minute work outs in to my day. Or may be just plank for as many minutes as possible? I’ve heard it’s amazing for your body. Anyway, I need to do something. So the ideas in this post come at a great time!

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

🙂 Yes – planking is great!

    • sam

Bikini Body Mommy has FREE workouts on youtube. She’s amazing. She has 90 day challenges that you can do completely free. It started doing these while my 2 year old played. Takes 20 minutes and it’s right out of your living room. NO GYM FEE!!

      • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

        Thanks for sharing Sam!

      • Linda

I’ve been doing BBM for a year now. I love it, and being that they are about 20 mins long but intense makes it great.

      • Abigail

I just went to check it out online…sorry if this Is a dumb question, but would you suggest starting with the 1.0 challenge? I see she has different ones and wasn’t sure what the differences are…thanks!!

        • allyson

I have done several of her challenges and I would recommend staring at 3.0. It took a few challenges for her to get a good format down.

  3. Casey Meyers

I workout to a dvd and YouTube videos in the comfort of my own home on my own time. Just the dvd alone I have lost ten pounds. With all the free videos online there is no need to go to the gym. There are so many ways to get a good workout without stepping foot in a gym.

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

That’s awesome Casey! Way to go!

  4. Angela

I use YouTube for workouts as well! For all you mamas out there expecting, if you search prenatal workouts there are plenty to choose from. My favorites are BodyFit by Amy and any of Denise Austin’s. Accountability with like minded friends is another free way of getting in exercise and sticking to it!

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

      Thanks for the tip Angela!

  5. Marianna

Bikini body mommy.com is also very good….can find the workouts on YouTube or sign up on her website (videos r free ). I like it because it’s a 90 day challenge that starts out slow and builds up….most workouts r 30 min or less if even that….I lost a little over 20 pounds by the time I was done with the challenge

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

Thanks! Congrats on the weight loss – that’s fantastic! 👏🏻

  6. Becky

    I love xhit on YouTube!

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

Thanks! I’ll have to check that one out Becky! 🙂

  7. Jess

Tone it up has great free workouts on Youtube and I really like Fitness Blender (as you mentioned above) on Youtube.

  8. Kerri

I have been following Blogilates with Cassey since 2009 when she started. She offers free workout calendars that use her videos on YouTube. She’s great! Super energetic and full of encouragement 🙂

    • Melissa J.

      Wow! That’s awesome!

I just started her beginning Pilates calendar. I’m on day 11 so far. It’s tough since I’m so used to just doing daily 45 minute cardio routines for years. I finally decided it’s time to actually start to tone and firm. I love Cassey’s spirit and motivation! I really recommend her too. 🙂

  9. Susan

Here in Las Vegas it’s too hot for outdoors workouts unless your up at 5am lol. I do Jessica Smith workouts! Found her on YouTube & then purchased her 6 wk transformation system & got in great shape from it. Love all her workouts, even the free YouTube ones!
By end of September we’ll be back outside to workout thru may!

  10. R2d2

Kayla Itsines , fitness Internet guru. Offers 28 min work outs at home , suitable for all levels . Guides can be downloaded on Pinterest for no cost .

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

      Good to know, thanks!

  11. Andrea

If you like yoga try doyogawithme.com or Lesley Fightmaster yoga. I love both of these websites!

  12. Jtaylorsmith

Thank you so much! What a great variety. Now, I have no excuses!

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

      😀

I walk almost everywhere. I do not own a car. I live a purposeful life. I can not rush, scenery does not blur by and consumption is very mindful. I started at 300 pounds, now 130. I’ve walked over 12k miles.

If I need a car (monthly dental appointment or bi monthly tattoo removal appointment), I walk 1.5 miles to the $7.75/hr Zip Car.

It is our choices that create our reality.

    • Mourrene

It’s great that you are able to walk to so many places. That wouldn’t be an option for me since I live too far from the places that I most need to go to but I’m totally impressed with your weight loss!

  14. Rachel

My husband loves the gym membership but the price and time away from home is hard now that we have 2 small kids.

We found a neighbor on Nextdoor selling a home weight gym for $300 usually it is $2200 new. Now $300 is quite a bit but it’s the cost of less than a year of the gym and can last a long time.

So many people buy home equipment that go rarely used and are willing to sell them cheap since they are taking up space!

    • Anna

My husband and son both lift and we bought the bench/bar at Dicks SG, but my son needed so much weight he bought it all off craigslist (not normally a fan) But with everything said and done it was about $500. All that weight in the store would’ve cost over 2k. He benches around 400lb and competes so it was a great deal for us!

  15. Denise

The most excercise I get is my arm movement from bag of chips to mouth

  16. Elizabeth M.

    Thank you!!!

  17. holly

This has always been my problem (saving money on fitness)! I would walk/run around my neighborhood but, for the most part, it wasn’t safe (dark by the time I got home, etc).
So my frugal fitness routine was: I bought 2 weights from Walmart (10 and 20lb dumbbell), NOT a set; just 1 of each! An agility ladder, resistance bands, and used an outdoor track at a local community center. That was my routine for 6 months. With eating less and no soda, I lost 40 lbs within a year (180 to 140).

When winter rolled around, I joined Planet Fitness. $10 a month, and I showered there (save water at home). I prefer this now b/c I’m more motivated with that $10/month. At times, they offer 3 day passes.

  18. Latoya

Check to see if your city has a “November Project”. It’s a free exercise group with boot camp type exercises. It’s mainly in larger cities but you may have a similar project in your area.

  19. Lauren

The free sworkit app is amazing!! I have been doing it for years

  20. Staci

I highly recommend Fitness Blender on Youtube. So many choices – different lengths and difficulties. I’ve recently been using one of their stretching videos to help with my back pain. And all free!:)

  21. Deb

I recommend the WAHOO7 app. 7 minute workout for those of us who don’t have time. LOL

  22. Emily Adams

Does anyone know of some good workouts on Roku?

  23. Emily Adams

Thanks for all the great tips!

  24. Cari

Thanks! I need to get back into a routine. I already follow a group called Lipstick and lunges on facebook which helps with meal planning!
