Is Roku better than the Fire stick?

Is the only difference between this and the express+ stick the 4K? Thanks. I saw them both at Walmart on Black Friday just wasn’t sure the real difference.

When you buy the stick, do you still have to pay for memberships for Netflix, Hulu, etc?

Is there any free streaming with this stick? Like is there channels that have some free episodes or news channels to watch for free?

    • Chad

There are some free options. There is a local news app that (if your local news channel is participating) then it shows the live news broadcasts and then loops the last broadcast until a new one airs. There are also some free movie channels. Mostly older movies https://www.roku.com/showcase/the-roku-channel . Some local stations have dedicated apps as well. But it likely only broadcasts the news or lets you retrieve past news broadcasts. Most apps will require a valid login to a subscription tv service. I would suggest checking out the Roku site. They do have some articles on apps that are free and don’t require a login. https://blog.roku.com/blog/2014/09/29/which-roku-channels-are-free#!

If you have Xfinity – there is an Xfinity app. Currently it is in Beta testing and it is free. This will allow you to stream all of your Xfinity channels. I was able to give back 3 of my rented boxes and stop paying the monthly rent when I purchase the roku device. You do still have to have one Xfinity box and of course an Xfinity account , but I think of it like going on an Xfinity “diet”.

Thank you for the replies! I’m assuming you still have to pay for Xfinity?

I have a roku streaming stick-does this one improve the picture quality since it’s 4K? Our Tv is not an ultra Hd.

Currently i dont think there is much streaming in 4k-i think only netflix does. Doublecheck on that though.
