Are you a DIRECTV customer? If you have been considering cutting the satellite and ditching the service, this is a must-read!

(Written by Bryn, Collin’s sister who had to share this awesome tip!)

Rumor has it that DIRECTV is running an insane promotion right now for existing customers who are debating whether to get rid of the satellite service. My husband and I constantly ask ourselves whether our monthly DIRECTV bill is worth the expense and ponder the decision to just go to a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu.

BUT, since we still have DIRECTV, I decided to give them a call! And that call just saved me $600!

If you have been considering canceling your service too, this may be an alternative! Simply dial DIRECTV customer service at 1-800-531-5000 and state “cancel service” when you get to the menu options. When asked, be sure to state that you are not moving (unless of course you are in the middle of a move!) and your call will then be routed directly to the customer retention/loyalty department.

You will then need to share with the customer service representative that you are wanting to reduce your monthly bill and are looking for any special offers that may be available for your account. Within a few minutes, the representative will let you know if your account qualifies for additional savings.

Guess what? I was offered a savings of $50 per month for the next 12 months! You guys! That’s a total savings of $600! Merry Christmas to me! 😱💃

We have media com for cable and hate how much we pay every month. My hubs pays the bill, but I know it’s over $100 per month without the premium channels! I would love to ditch it, but he’s afraid he will loose sports coverage…

    • Ralph

Hi Amy. I am a customer loyalty agent for AT&T.
So what sports channels is he worried about?
U must not forget that Directv is the best for avid sports lovers like him and myself. Plus we are the only provider for NFL Sunday ticket! He won’t lose his sports with DTV! I’m sure he will have more!

      • Kendris Watts

I have an account with At& T at least I did I had only internet and phone. being tried to explain to them that i don’t and never had direct. my bill some how was connected to my sister. Now they want me to pay this big bill. every time I called to explain they only cut the service on without correcting the problem or they would credit the bill. Now they are saying the bill haven’t been paid in 7 months I called every month since February with the same problem. Couldn’t make them credit the bill that was there decision. Ispokewith directvthey said directv bill is still attached to my uverse account that big paymentshouldbe direct tv. someone was to call mebackprobably 3weeks ago I need help!!

        • Shawn

You need to call and speak with a manager get their name and explain the situation ask for an itemized Bill and make sure you get their name and iD number. Try to get someone stateside.

      • Wtf

So… someone talks about their bill being high, so you advertise a package (Sunday ticket) that’s $300 per year extra…?

    • Rebe

I need a post on how to save with Comcast (Xfinity)! Help please!

      • Tamika McKinney

Works the same way tell them you’re thinking of going satellite

  2. Rachel

We had cut cable a few months back and had trouble with streaming because of our internet. We saw a great promotion for DirecTV for only $50/mo. We have an HD DVR, don’t pay extra for the boxes (We have 4), and we’re glad we went back. We cancelled our internet which was $75 alone!! Then cancelled Hulu and Sling. It worked out better for us cause we live in the country and our providers are limited.

    • Disgruntled

That’s great until half way into your contract and they start charging you for all the equipment and figuring out a way to raise your bill every month.

      • Rhonda olivet

My bill is $170 a month. I have all the newest equipment but direct TV dose not have internet in my location. I went up from $120 to $170 after many calls to them. I really don’t understand if they don’t have internet why talk me into equipment that needs it!!! I want to scream

        • Wilson

Yes you are correct. At first directtv was a great deal. Then I moved. We made an appointment for the the move got moved. No tech for 3 days after the appointment. No internet in my area. Which I had in my old location. Then my contract started over. I pay 178.00 for nothing. And you are right 50.00 of my bill is for equipment. Leaving as soon as this contract from hell ever ends.

          • Bali39

Get wireless home phone with internet box 14 dy trial and 2 yr contract to offset its ewuipment cost($200)? With Att unlimited plus or choice plan -$20. Or by itself $60/25gb or $80/50gb with overage $15/1gb. I have this box now*connect 20 devices on wifi from it) as along as Att works well in your area you will have internet from cell tower

          • Rhonda Oliver

What good is the stupid hopper if I can’t record anything or even have on demand? They don’t care it’d all about the money. I don’t mind paying for s ok mething s long as it flipping works.
Why are all the good deals for new customers? When will direct TV take care of their existing ones?

        • Jay

Go streaming with no cable bill

  3. Beamergirl

We have Comcast an pay $104 a month an that includes internet an showtime ! Can’t beat that !

    • Ralph

Great but how how many channels and what speeds on your internet.
I am a a customer loyalty agent and people don’t understand price vs value.

    • Chris

Comcast is ripping you off – we have a ton of channels, 1 DVR, 1 mini DVR, digital adapter, 100 Mbps Internet $34/mo 5 yr deal all from Comcast!

      • Jen Law

How did you manage that deal?

      • Diane OC

Chris, I would love the details on your Comcast deal so I can ask them to match it for me. Please share. Thanks!

      • Joe

        That’s BS..lol

      • Madeline

So what plan do you have. because I have directv and I pay a lot for a while I was paying $92 then last month it went up to $176 all at once so then you call them and explain the situation and they keep you on for over 2 hours for a then to tell you that all they can do is change the plan and that’s not counting that they merged with AT&T so you wind up being transfer back and fourth for over 2 hours and the problem never gets solved I finally hang up on them. Now I have a problem with the directv app on my phone ever time I try to connect it sends me to my phone bill app so now I can’t watch anything on my phone.

        • Itoaj38

OK first and foremost it’s not call direct TV and threaten to cancel you’ll get the first rep who could care less about customer retention or your problems. I have had developed forever and I know to only deal with the loyalty department period. Ask for a loyalty rep and explain to them only your circumstances and absolutely QUESTION any and every charge on your account. The key with DTV and Comcast is before the end of your contract renew it during their promo season which for DTV is currently now in December.

      • Iris

I’m guessing you are in a market that Google Fiber is located, or another very competitive competitor. Comcast will not offer that rate in an area that they know they don’t need to.

  4. Devon O

This was AMAZING!!! Called and just saved $111 off my bill EACH MONTH. My mind is blown on this. I knew we were paying a lot but no idea how much we were overpaying. I am so pleased with this deal! THANK YOU, HIP2SAVE!!!!

  5. Bonnie

I spent over half hour waiting on the phone only to be told SINCE I AM UNDER CONTRACT, there are no available reductions in my bill. Very disappointed especially since we have a lot of problems with their service.

    • Ralph

Issues? What kind of issues? Have u called tech support to troubleshoot or have u had a repair technician at ur home? Or is it billing issues?

  6. Bridget

We did this and we had to sign up for a 2 yr contract. Just a heads up when calling.

  7. Mari

My husband and I had a really bad experience with direct TV we will never go back to them even if they offer better deal, because they make the contract, yeah first few months is cheap than they go higher and to cancel is 400 more than what we pay to get it, and we only had the basic channels and our payment was 50 a month, it was the most horrible experience, my sister in law says same thing, direct TV makes you sign a contract for two years.

    • Ralph

    • Ralph

U say bill goes up after few months. Well its a 2 year commitment and u get a discount on first year of the 2 year commitment. Second year the discount falls off. U call and ask for customer loyalty to get another promotion to lower bill for the second year! Did u do that? And nobody makes u sign a 2 year contract. It’s not by force. Also contract just locks in ur pricing. U say basic channels but what do u mean by basic? DTV has many packages. I am almost sure basic wasn’t ur package!

      • Winnie

Ralph, I did call after my bill went up by $30 (starting 13th month)I called every week to try to get them to lower my bill. All I got was for me to bundle with another att service. Well, att internet is not available in our area, we don’t need a home phone. We had no other option. After 4 hours on the phone, a supervisor credited me $30. As I thought our bill issue was taken care of, 14th month the bill came. There! Again, went up by $30. So I called. A supervisor told me he would take care of things and ask me to wait for a call from Directv. A couple days later, someone from Directv left a message on my phone telling me that I had to bundle. Okay I tried to call again in a week. I was told there’s nothing they could do to lower my bill. So tired of lies and false promises. I decided to cancel directv. The next day after I cancelled it, they started calling me everyday to win me back. If they really value me as a customer, why didn’t they help me with my bill while I was still a customer? What kind of business tactics is that. Sorry no more directv for me

      • Amy

        Ralph-
Dude, quit trolling people on here. We are all trying to help each other figure out deals and such. And you’re on here trying to plug AT&T. (And I know they own DirectTV.)

        • Ralph

I’m not trolling anyone! Notice u never answered my questions. I am in customer loyalty. If the cx has a promotion available on their account, we add it. Simple. Some require a commitment some don’t. I was trying to help u but oh well. Some customers are just difficult.

    • Brad Zimmer

I have an issue with Directv about my bill. My bank corrected their mistske on Nov 13th. So account was paid in full. We mailed in this months bill, but Directv’s computer still has original amount due, and if you call their 1800 number to paid its a completely different amount. But the reprs only go by their computers rven after listening to the updated account info. So here i am account current, but no tv becsuse they dont undetstand. The financisl dept is suppose call me some time nrxt week. So here I sit with a bill current until Dec 5th andI no tv.

  8. sherry

I use an antenna. It is free. There are no bills or fees all year long.

    • Teresa

Us to, and we just watch movies with our Amazon prime for free or once in awhile use promotional money for those movies that are not free. We are not big TV watchers except the NFl, which we still get about 90% of the games we want to see anyway and can always find the other games online to watch free.

    • Jeanne Brattin

Antenna tv for me too, no more charges, former direct tv subscriber. Love it .

  9. Ashley

I just got the same deal and a free upgrade to my receivers. Thanks for posting!

  10. Evan Stubbs

Ever since direct TV and CBS in our area can not come to an agreement on costs we’ve been unable to watch any programs which come over the CBS network even sports on the NFL channel… we will be leaving direct TV as soon as the football season ends …we are extremely disappointed with customer service representative telling us there is nothing they can do to fix the problem

  11. ChristinaB

We’re paying $48 a month including HBO and Showtime for 3 months with a 1 yr contract. I call periodically to ask if there are any discounts and usually get $5 additionally off, etc. I’ve been a customer for 8 yrs, they have been good to me and the DVR works well for the kids.

  12. Rachel

Try ACTUALLY cancelling your service and then see what happens when the actual corporate office themselves call you. That’s when the real deals happen. We recently cancelled DirecTV completely and get letters everyday in the mail with offers to come back for $200 visa gift cards with savings included

    • Kim

Did you go back? If so, did they make you sign a contract?

    • brit

True. We cancelled and disconnected and they “paid ” us to come back. We received a $300 credit. Of course, with a new contract.

  13. Jbabii

I had the same offer from direct tv. But I ask what the catch would be and hopefully you guys ask the same question, but the catch was its really renewing your contract. Yes after that year your bill will shoot back to the moon and you will be stuck all over again. I figure why take that deal when my contract over in April. They don’t play anything on the tv anyways.

  14. Marty

We are getting over 100 channels for $21 including tax with Dish.

  15. Rae

I worked as a csr for directv and this is correct but everything everyone is saying is also correct. Usually the first person you reach is an “ace agent, they can’t do anything for you. They are required to transfer you if you say the magic words “I want to cancel”. They transfer you to a retention specialist and that person is allowed to offer you several different things based on your “loyalty” and if your contract is about to expire. It’s a discount but most people hear this and call and say hey I want the discount I heard you’re giving, don’t say that. Also, be nice 😣 this is a job for a lot of people and there’s only so much they can do for you sometimes.

  16. Sueyb

Thanks for sharing your positive experience, Bryn. I just spent less than 15 minutes on the phone with a very pleasant representative, and my bill should be shrinking by more than $60 per month, plus I’ve got a free Showtime trial. I’ll pay close attention to the bill to make sure they follow through with the deals. Yay!

  17. pjstahl1108

Thank you so much! I just called Direct TV & woohoo saved $50.00 a month!! 🙂 Happy dance!!

  18. todd

    Ill stick with DISH

  19. C

Thank you! I just called and they offered me $50 off each month! I’ve tried this before and the most I’ve been offered is $15-20 a month. In fact, I have a $15 credit that is set to end in 6 months, but they actually said I get to keep that until it runs out. So, for 6 months I’ll actually be saving $65 in credits per month. I thought for sure since I had that credit on there I wouldn’t be eligible for anything else. I’m glad I called anyway! They must really be trying to retain customers with the growth of many streaming services.

  20. Queenjen87

For those frustrated with promotions ended, what I always do if the retention department can’t give me a good enough discount, is we switch the account from my husband’s name to mine and vice versa.

Most reps know what we’re doing and happily take care of it for us and waive “installation fees” or anything like that.

  21. Rick

Same exact scenario for me…$50 off for 12 mos.

  22. Alicia

I’ve tried to cancel DirecTV many times. I get told since I’ve moved a few times in the past couple of years I’m not allowed to unless I want to pay a huge disconnection fee. I don’t have the huge funds their demanding. I was also told by reps in the area that their is new receivers and I should get mine upgraded for free and when I asked DirecTV about this on the phone they said it would not be until 2020 when it comes to my area. Umm hello their already here. I hate satellite TV. Every storm or even rain we have no TV. I’ll be lucky if I save $5 a month on my bill but it’s added right back with all the extra taxes they add on.

  23. Adf

Just saved 600 a year just this second!
No discussion at all, 50 bucks a month credit.
    Thanks for the suggestion!

  24. Catalina Sanchez

Who cares about the first 12 months they go up substantially on the 2nd year, that’s the problem

  25. Rita

I had called direct tv in August and asked them to disconnect my cable, never did. Called again in August asked them to disconnect the cable.
I was told that I would have to wait till November before they were able to cancel. Called a few more times finally said they would send boxes.
Never did finally in November I got an email to bring my equipment to the UPS Store and they will mail them .
I kept calling and telling them that I refuse to pay for SEP, Oct and Nov they just ignored mee
About the bill and canceling my subscription. Maybe I’ll just ignore their bills!!!

    • Winnie

They will send them to collection if you don’t pay your bills

  26. Susan Twitty

I have been a loyal directTV cut omer years. I will be cutting the cord aso the cost is way too much.

  27. John E Kollar Jr

I’ve been a DirecTV customer for 11 years now. Since AT&T has acquired DTV the customer service has gone down hill fast. My bill was around $75 and now is just shy of $200/month! I renewed my NFL Sunday Ticket (only reason I haven’t switched… Yet) which obviously added to the bill for a few months but that is ridiculous! I’ve called “customer service” several times and it takes over 3 minutes to navigate the menu to actually speak to a human. Then they tell me they are unable to look at my bill at their level and transfer me up the chain. That person isn’t sure why my bill increased do much and can’t see the details. What?! They send a message to some department that should be able to see everything (?) and say they will give me a call. They give me a one time credit of $20 and tell me this other customer billing department or whatever it is will be calling me. That was a couple months ago. Wait, is that the phone ringing? Nope. Still waiting… Never had this type of problem until AT&T took over.

  28. Cruz

    Spectrum all the way!!!
Wi-Fi is the fastest possible out there since fiber optics or something like that is used. There is never NO CONTRACT. I just got a bundle deal guaranteed 1 yr for $30/Cable, the fastest Wi-Fi/ plus telephone service. So for all 3 – $90/ month!!!! I thought that was a ton till I read how much some of these companies are charging!

  29. riss

So which one should I get if I want NFL? Sling, Hulu, Amazon Prime? Cutting the cable tomorrow. Help!

    • riss

And we have a smart tv, so do we need a stick of some kind? Thanks.

    • Ralph

      Directv.

    • Sam

Riss, we had Direct TV for several years and were spending about $200 a month. About a year ago, we bought a Shield (https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/shield/) at Best Buy and canceled DirectTV. You can also stream through game systems like PS4 or Xbox. It has been amazing. The only thing that we pay for is Sling at $20 a month. My husband never misses a college or NFL game. For more info Google “cut the cord” ans you’ll see a lot of tips on how to stream tv shows and movies.

  30. Bigtula

This works! I did this a couple of months ago! I have $50 worth of credits each month as well as HBO free as long as i keep the service and Showtime free for 6 months with automatic cancellation instead of automatic renewal that’s annoying. They also told me to call back in 6 months and get Cinemax or Starz free.

  31. Sarah G

I have DirectV tried to cancel a week after I got it, they told me it would cost $480 to cancel. Then they offer me a deal but not a deal in my book,, told me I can get 5 extra channels for $5 more . Already paying $68 really!!! It’s a big scam.

  32. Florent

What a bench of idiots . haven’t you learn yet that cable is going away. Why don’t you buy yours self an amazon stick at 40 dollars or better yet a fire tv second and 1st generation to take advantage of the new internet system that just started few days ago. Remember every thing today is on the internet it is just a matter of you finding where to watch it. For free. It is a one time payment and nerfix is 1o dollar a month.or amazone student and you can have the world. Why is the world so full of stupid people.

    • riss

      Wow! Just…wow!

    • Rebe

Trolls do not know how to spell! And you are calling others a “bench” of idiots?

  33. dc

We have gotten $35 off a month the last 3 years. 4 tvs and a dvr for $56

  34. Elton Massey

They are all screwing us! Net Neutrality forever!

  35. Sonya

My At&t/directv bill has been increasing since March 2017. Every month i call and waste hours of my time on the phone. Every month customer care reps LIE and say my bill will be reduced the next billing cycle. I even have a case#. I’m so frustrated, I’m going with the competition!

  36. Lisa

Ever since att took over direct tv there has been billing issues and b.s. we pay 178.00 a month total with nfl package no hbo as we don’t watch those channels. Just have to call monthly to get bill corrected and it is ridiculous! Thinking of going to dish after nfl over next month. We are out in country no cable or other companies all satellite out here so hands are tied!

    • Liz

I am a retired computer programmer and it is very obvious to me that AT&T has IT system issues, and have had these issues for a long time. I did support Sprint systems for a while when I was still working and they were a complete nightmare to maintain. I suspect AT&T is the same way as Sprint.

  37. PB

They did the same for me for me for 12 months and the price changed back. I then cut the cord and with a balance of streaming products at a lower cost than their 50 dollars off. Wish I had done that in the first place.

  38. VideoGuy

Look at the fine print. You just got a reduction for 1 year, but you agreed to a new 2 year contract. Guess what happens in year 2. Typical ATT/DTV gotcha. Sad thing is that you are propagating this. Are you really just a shill for ATT?

  39. Richard

I have Directv Now for $35 a month. No contracts! All you need is internet and you have all the tv anyone could want for 35 bucks!

    • Joe

Great deal if you don’t mind losing CW and a few other channels that have your shows on them.

    • Peaches

Me too. Love the DTV Now service. I’ve had it for a year now and it was one of my better decisions. Regular DirecTV not so much. And now the local channels are being added in I don’t even have to switch to my digital antenna as often. It’s great!

  40. Jo Ann

I called DirecTV and had them reduce my bill$50 a month for the next 12 months but the little catch is they sign me up for another year contract so now I might be saving money but I’m stuck with something that I wanted to get rid of

  41. Kim Plucker

I did this yearly with Spectrum. I really dislike their new programming tiers now though. I am only paying for internet and the lowest tier of cable but with the new tv I bought you can stream almost any of the channels we do not get. So for $70/month I am still happy.

  42. Saver

We did this two months ago and they couldn’t have cared less we were threatening to leave. They told us we’d simply have to send back our boxes. We decided to actually drop them and go with “DIRECTV Now”and are happily saving $100 a month. If you have ok internet and don’t mind losing dvr, but having “on demand” for most shows, slip into an AT&T and ask about it. That’s 1200 a year for us!

  43. Thomas Dashiell

I tried to reduce my DTV Bill by calling the Loyalty Dept. They wouldn’t reduce my bill. Yes I told them Comcast was cheaper. They didn’t care if I left. They even offered to waive my ETF.

  44. ASC

This worked wonders. Saved $50 a month and got the 3 premium channels for 6months free. They even offered to up my data for my AT&T account by 5gb from 20gb. I have 4 lines.

  45. Jen4kids

I didn’t know if it would work for me since I am in month 11 of our 2 yr contract but, I called customer service and asked if I was eligible for any of the Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals …..CS said they could only offer me 3 month of a pay channel or they could transfer me to the loyalty department so, I asked them to transfer me. The loyalty lady was able to reduce my bill from $69 to $19 with the $50 off for 12 months! AMAZING!! Thanks so much for posting!! Anyone wondering if it is worth the time, DO IT! I sure can find a better way to spend that money! I love H2S!

  46. Tarah

I’ve been with DTV for 7 years and recently our shows have been glitching in and out even when it’s paused. A serviceman came and told us our equipment was hooked up with old equipment and said he changed it out, but we’re still having the same issue. DTV told us we would not be charged for the service is it was a technical issues, but they did charge us for it and it was like pulling teeth to have the charge removed. We were also supposed to have discounts applied to our bill but I’ve yet to see them applied. It’s highway robbery.

  47. Liz

I am a retired computer programmer and it is very obvious to me that AT&T has IT system issues, and have had these issues for a long time. I did support Sprint systems for a while when I was still working and they were a complete nightmare to maintain. I suspect AT&T is the same way as Sprint.

  48. Andrew Martin

It worked, no adding to contract. Called and received 50 dollars off the choice package for a year on top of getting NFL Sunday ticket at 11 a month for the remainder of savings. So all in all I received a 700 dollar savings this year. Thanks for the heads up 👍👍

  49. A m

Horrible experience trying to get att internet with our existing direct tv. They are supposed to be one company but they are not they refer you to call the seperate companies back and forth. They don’t communicate. Don’t keep notes of what other half said. Horrible horrible

  50. Noelle

It worked!!! Thanks for sharing! They gave me the $50 credit for 12 months and $10 off the sports package we have for 6 months. You saved me $660 this year!!!
