I have been wanting one of these, can anyone vouch for weather they are worth the expense.

I have one and love it!! We grow cherry tomatoes in two of the spots and lettuce in another. It’s awesome to have fresh tomatoes in the winter. We usually start herbs but they get a little crazy so once they are bigger we move them to jars on our window sill. We’re actually thinking of buying another so we can do peppers as well!

Chelsey, which model do you have? I’m also thinking of purchasing it for my son. He is a chef and I know he would like to grow his own herbs and vegetables. Is it worth the cost? Are the nutrients and plants expensive to replace. I’m just really on the fence about purchasing it at this time. Going way over my budget. But, it looks really good.

I think it’s worth it. I have the same size model but the discontinued my exact version and now it comes with Wi-Fi – mine doesn’t. The tomatoes taste way better than store bought and I’m always watching for deals on the pods. You can actually buy ones that you do yourself and put your own seeds in but I’ve found the tomatoes relatively inexpensive every time so I always do that. Ive had my machine exactly a year and haven’t had to buy a new bottle of nutrients a yet so I’m not sure on those. If you’re growing tomatoes, peppers and lettuce I’d recommend this. If you just want herbs those can easily be grown in a windowsill jar. Also, I love having this in my kitchen because the lights automatically turn on and off and mine are on at night so we use it as a nightlight if anyone needs a drink of water it’s always on.

They are not. First. you will never grown the amount of vegtables to cover even the sale cost of the machine. Second, vegtables grown indoors won’t be as bountiful or as good as those grown outside. Plants love rich soil, outdoor air, direct sun and rain.
You might also notice the tomato plant in the photo is unrealistically small, lush and full of cherry tomatos and very short on vine. In fact you don’t even see the vine.
I garden all spring and summer and wanted one too for winter to grow lettuce but laughed when I saw the price tag.
Also the little seed pods the machine uses are expensive and the selection of plants is limited – the package comes with some pods and I think you can reuse them. But unless you already have seed it might be hard to find vegatable seeds in winter.
All and all you could go to the expense and buy it anyway and just enjoy it and see what you get.
As an alternative you could also go to a hardware or garden center and design your own system – with some plant containers and a grow light. That essentially is all this is except its in a neat, attractive, little package.
