Vet here. I see a lot of this in practice and have come to realize that most people are not aware of the limitations of a flea shampoo. Flea and tick shampoos have no residual action. If (and that is questionable, depending on the product) they do kill the fleas on your pet at the time of the bath, it won’t kill any that hop on the next day or the next. The adult fleas you see on your pet on any given day represent ~5% of the flea infestation. The other 95% are in various stages around your house. It takes 3 full months of treatment to break the life cycle. This is why you need a monthly product. It works 24/7 (though admittedly starting to lose a little effectiveness as you near the re-application date). On a side note, most people don’t understand the life cycle and think that if they see fleas the monthly product is not working. Remember, it kills the fleas on your pet within 24 hours but NEW ones are hopping on daily. So you may see some fleas (usually not moving so fast as the drug begins to kill them) for quite a while, but they will all die within 24 hours and they will die before they can reproduce. This is how the life cycle breaks. Also, most (good, effective) topical flea preparations (ex. Frontline, Revolution, Advantage Multi) are water resistant but most state on the package not to use within 24 hours of a bath bc it makes it makes the product slightly less effective. So feel free to bathe and wash off all the flea dirt (which is flea poop aka. dried blood which is why the water runs red) but if you use a flea shampoo for the job, understand it’s limitations. Cheers! 😀
Thanks!
Gone
Darn, that went fast! Thanks so much for the heads up!
