How is this different than just doing it online? any perks?
One plus downloaded versions have over online is that you get complete access to the forms. A couple years ago, I had a complicated state deduction that I knew the TurboTax software wasn’t handling correctly. With the downloaded version, I could specify & manually complete the necessary forms directly; online version doesn’t allow that.

@Sarah @Rachel I’ve never done taxes directly on a .com site so can’t compare for you, but I know buying the software (TurboTax or HRBlock) to install resident to a computer allows licenses for 5 free federal efiles. I suspect that online prep is 1 return. Installed software allows you to save your data as a .pdf in addition to the software’s data file (don’t know if online prep offers that?). Installed software doesn’t require you to have an active internet connection during input (just for initial software updates and final efiling). It appears this TurboTax deal is also offering a copy of their basic year ‘round financial software with purchase.
The key is how complicated your taxes are. Free online filings are only appropriate for basic taxes- investments, self-employment, incomes over certain amounts need more guidance.
Also, check software editions/levels/tiers – both the big tax software companies have charts that show what each includes. You may not need the more expensive “premier” version; the “deluxe” or “basic” may be just the thing for your tax situation. In prior years, the cheaper “deluxe” version of HRBlock handled stock sales and a simple home biz. (Haven’t checked this year’s version yet). Hip posted the HRBlock software back in Nov for $13.99 – a sweet deal! Last year a friend showed Amazon price to Staples customer svc in store, they matched, and she had it in hand to get started when she got home.
The H&R Block deal (on the H&R Block website) is still going on. I just got the Deluxe + State bundle for $15!
We love TurboTax. We always wait to find a good deal like this. The hardest part is basically getting all your basic info in and then after that (year after year) it should be a breeze. You still do have to buy the current tax year’s program though. TurboTax makes it easy as it defines elements of return in a “Barney” way. Agreed with what others said above. too, need to find out which version works for you if you go with TurboTax based on your situation, i.e., real estate, business, stocks, etc., or you’ll end up having to pay for an upgraded version.

I use the home and business and this is a good deal. 2 years ago the best I could find was $80 but last year I found $60 in February. Still good to grab it now for $65 and not have to hope for a deal later!
Fyi in previous years I”ve been able to do Sch E, Sch C, and stock sales on the basic TurboTax, however it doesn’t walk you throught the forms, but all the forms are on all the programs. So you can buy the cheapest and do any and all taxes.
