Do you have any IKEA Dressers purchased before June 2016?

In June of 2016, IKEA issued a recall on select chests and dressers as they have a risk of tipping over and causing injury. You can head here to see if any of your IKEA chests or dressers are included.

If you do have a recalled dresser, you can either request a free wall-anchoring kit OR return your chest or dresser to your local IKEA store and receive a refund. If you’re unable to return the chest/dresser to the store, you can even contact IKEA and they will pick it up and give you a refund free of charge.

Check out this email we received from reader, Julianne:

Hey Collin and team! I just wanted to pass some helpful information. There are still a lot of people that don’t know about the huge IKEA dresser recall. It’s super easy to either 1) Get an anchor kit or 2) Get refunded.

My family just moved and we almost left behind two dressers as we were not sure if we would have room for them. These dressers were between 5-10 years old and when I found out they were part of the IKEA recall, I took the dressers and their matching glass tops back to IKEA for a full CASH refund of $260+.

I even found someone on Craigslist right before Christmas who was also selling their dresser. I felt like a little big of a weirdo but emailed them about the recall and they went to IKEA and got $90.

Thanks again for all you do!

(Thanks, Julianne!)

Thanks for the info! Can it be returned without receipt?

    • Melissa

      I’m wondering this too

      • Kara Farmer

Yes it can be returned without the receipt

    • Weber14

We return ours and they gave us a cash refund. (I would have been happy with store credit lol)

    • visitor3

Yes! They gave me back the retail cost of each dresser, plus tax. Picked up for free, and I got a check in the mail. The dressers were about 10 years old and used a lot. Was glad to see them go now that little ones are in the home.

  2. Jay

Yes. You can return them without the receipt. I am not sure if a limit is set on a store by store base but I have been able to return multiple items for a full cash refund for the current price of the item no questions asked. Ikea CS told me they did not care what the condition was. It could be broken, painted or have your kids stickers all over it, they will still take it. All they do is ask for your license, as do most places when you return something without a receipt. Ikea has great customer service. Also, there are more series other than Malm that have been recalled. I know some of the Hemnes dressers also qualify.

My daughter has an IKEA dresser and just this week she mentioned the dresser almost tipped over…I am glad it did not hurt her and she was able to ask her grandma to help. I will be checking up on this. Her dresser is white with glass and we did purchase it prior to 2016. Thank you!

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Glad she is okay! You’re so welcome!

  4. Shannon

Do you have to bring the dresser back to the store for a refund? I have the malm dresser and it’s definitely dangerous. If you pull down on any open drawer the entire dresser will tip forward.

    • Melissa

All you really need is the anchoring kit. That takes care of the problem. Then you don’t have to return the dresser.

    • Oatbunch

You can return it or if you contact them, I believe they will pick it up. Also, you can go to any register and they’ll give you an anchoring kit for free—they handed me a whole bunch when I just mentioned I had an older dresser.

Just a reminder that this can happen with any dresser/changing table in a moment’s notice if not anchored to the wall!! One of our twins tipped over the changing table and luckily wasn’t injured, but it reminded us to anchor all our tall dressers, etc.!! Super scary!

    • couponer

Good point made here. Any tall furniture like this can be toppled over sometimes with very little force. We always put wood shims under the edges to force furniture to tilt slightly back toward the wall…helps reduce the forward pull.

    • Holly (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Great Reminder, Crystal!

    • Connie

Yes. As pointed out on many news reports, this is not just an issue with IKEA chests. Many kids are injured every year by furniture falling on top of them, not just IKEA chests. It’s always a good idea to be safe and attach a chest to the wall. IKEA has been including an anchor bracket or strap with chests/dressers for as long as i can remember, but most people choose not to use the anchor. Kudos to IKEA for making us more aware of this danger and going above and beyond to keep children safe.

    • visitor3

True, but IKEA dressers are worse than most tall dressers because the front and tops are heavy, but they lack counterweight. The bottom is empty. The back is flimsy particleboard. Therefore, they are very front and top heavy and VERY easily tip forward.

      • Mysty

This is true of most new inexpensive dressers from anywhere…Target, Walmart, even furniture stores.

  6. Dwilson19

Thank you we have two of these & had no idea of this recall. Just over Christmas break one of them did tip over. 🤦🏽‍♀️

    • Holly (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yikes! That is scary. You’re welcome!

  7. Nina

Oh my Gosh, this is so scary. Just another thing to worry about.

  8. Melanie

Anyone know if the dividers inside of the dresser in this picture are available for sale at IKEA? I need those in my life.

    • je

I don’t know if they have pink, but I own them in cream.

    • KathyKay12

Melanie, Yes IKEA sells the dividers.

    • Melanie

Yay! Thanks guys! I guess I know where I’m going tomorrow 😁

    • *Angela-Miles*

The container store also sells those dividers 🙂 Just incase you need another option

  9. Jaclyn

You can also go on the Ikea website and request that someone come to your house to anchor it for you, for free. We did this recently since we’re not too handy and didn’t trust ourselves to do it. Guys came out and anchored it, all for free.

    • Holly (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Wow, that’s awesome! Thanks for sharing!

  10. Just passing through

Shout out to Julianne for being a bit of a weirdo! 😂 I do stuff like that too and my father in law esp. thinks I’m nuts Hahahah. I’m like I’m just spreading the info/ giving options and that person can decide on their own

  11. GKeller

I have a Hemnes white dresser from about 2005. I can’t find any info on the dresser-I took out the drawers to look, etc… I’m guessing the sticker was removed. I do have the directions for putting it together which have a date of 2004. Do you think I’d still get the refund?

    • Shannon

I have that dresser also. You can order the kit I did that already. The website is somewhat confusing but I just ordered a bunch of the anchors. The (3 drawer) hemnes dresser isn’t as tippy as the malm (I have both).

  12. ree

we did this with an older dresser a few years back they recalled. they gave us a check back not even store credit. They arranged to pick it up too (outside service).

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh wow! Thanks for sharing your experience on a previous recall!

  13. cathm

Many thanks for sharing! I am heading to Ikea this weekend!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You are SO welcome!

  14. Missmarie05

I had two dressers that were on the recall list that we wanted to get rid of. I have small children but I also just wanted to get rid of the dressers. Ikea actually sent a truck with 2 guys to my house to pick up the furniture for me and then gave me a check for the value. It was amazing. Just another reason ikea is one of my favorite places!

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

That’s awesome to hear!! Thanks so much for taking a moment to share how easily the recall worked for you!

  15. Sarah

The Hemnes 8 drawer is not included in the recall.

  16. mary

I have a bookshelf and tv center that are the Expedit line. They aren’t on the list, but I don’t feel confident that they are safe from tipping over with a toddler. Do they allow me to return them?

  17. MommySpendsLess

Am I the only one who thinks it’s a little wrong to return the dresser just because you don’t want it anymore for reasons unrelated to the recall? I understand returning it if you’re tired of it tipping over or have safety concerns for yourself/kids/pets but it’s not like they’re offering a “changed your mind, give it back” promotion…
They’re offering an easy and generous way to solve a safety issue…

    • visitor3

The important thing is that the dressers are off the market, regardless of the customer’s motivation. Protects a visiting child who doesn’t live in the household that got rid of the top heavy dresser.

    • Robin

Although I see your point, think about what people usually do if they don’t want furniture any more, in most cases they:
      1. Donate/give it away, or
      2. Sell it.

Either way of those options just transfer the risk to someone else who may not be aware of the issues. Returning the item eliminates the risk, to the individual and to IKEA. That is why they are refunding the money because that is cheaper than a wrongful death/injury or class action lawsuit and the poor publicity that comes with those.

  18. tanya

I think any tall chest will tip over, we had an old chest, and my boy was under 3 years old, opened the bottom drawer, and it tipped over, good thing there was a couch close to the chest, so it didn’t fall all the way on him, the couch stopped it. I wasn’t in the room when it happened, my other boy called for help…that was so scary.

    • MidwestMama

Oh my gosh! That is so scary. I’m glad he was ok. Ikea issued these recalls following numerous injuries and deaths. It is very important to anchor all of the large furniture in your house. Great reminder H2S!

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

SO glad he was okay Tanya!

  19. Momo

I was not aware of this recall! Dh always complained about my Malm dressers, how they were hazardous & could easily tip over around our new baby. Wow*0* I have 5 Malm dressers x $50= $250!

  20. MJ

We own the Hemnes 8 drawer and it actually recently tipped over when my three year old had pulled all four of the top drawers open. It fell and all the contents spilled out. We were lucky she wasn’t injured but the dresser took a beating. I don’t see the Hemnes on the list however I wonder if they’ll still provide the wall anchor or the refund?

  21. Steph

I have the Hemnes 6 drawer in white. Does anyone know if that is part of the recall? It says 6 drawers stained pine….so is it only that color? Odd

  22. Olivia

I purchased two MALM dressers that are recalled, and definitely during the recall time period. However, my sticker looks nothing like the one pictured on their recall website and has a 6 digit code instead of a 4 digit code. The pickup people came two days ago. Just wondering if anyone else has had my experience. Not sure if I’ll get money for them or not.

  23. OTTAVIO

Just wondering if Ikea is recalling the tall cabinet too??

  24. christine

I have a transit 6 drawer which they don’t make anymore. How much would I get for a refund. I believe it was after 2002
