  This will be a really frustrating rod for anyone. better off spending a little more for an ugly stick and then they’ll have a better experience.

  I’m sure it will be ok but if your child is new to fishing best to get a closed baitcaster style until they get the hang of that and then advance then to open reel. Plus with fishing you kinda get what you pay for also. It’s cheap enough to just go for it though. Lol

   I was going to ask about getting this for a child, then noticed the open reel… bad idea (snarls easily). However, as Day-to-Day noted, at this price, getting a few hours out of it before it flies out of a small hand into the water is worth it. Take a kid fishing today! Great memories are made that way!! 🙂

   Thank you for all of these comments…very helpful! We went to thr beach last year, and the kind of fishing rod we got our sons was too complictated. Sons were bummed out!
