I absolutely love working for VIP KID!!! I am on my second month with them and have already taught 154 classes!

I signed up in November and I am so thankful I did! I love working for VIP kid! It has been such a blessing to our family!

I have worked with VIPKID for one month and absolutely love it! I am a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom and I finally have found a job I can do that doesn’t take me away from my family!! I work early in the morning while my kids are asleep and Fri/Sat evenings. It is so fun and little to no stress. I’m telling you ladies (and guys who do VERY well at this position) I made $1k in my first month!! I was elated because I seriously felt like I hardly worked.

Another current VIPKID teacher here! I absolutely LOVE the flexibility this wonderful job gives me and my family. I am able to continue staying home with my two young kiddos while still contributing to our family’s finances.

I’m curious…how much time do you put in to this? I’m already a full time teacher but wondering if this could fit in to my schedule to help supplement our current income?

        • Jill

Hi Ranee! There is a learning/preparation curve. It took me a handful of hours to get my classroom set up correctly (lighting, background, props that the company makes available to print), but once you have that done, there is very little prep work that goes into each class. It can take you a few minutes to scroll through the class slides (like powerpoint) and that’s it. It is so easy and enjoyable! Let me know if you have any more questions! Jill_louisa@hotmail.com

        • Desiree

I’m also a current VIPKID teacher but have only been with them for a little over a month. I’m in Ohio and I teach from 5:30-6:30 every morning and on Friday and Saturday nights I teach from 8:00-9:00. My hours are only limited because I have 4 young kids and I only teach while they are sleeping. I also like to still be able to spend time with my hubby before going to bed. You set your own hours. I think it’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to make some income while not taking any time away from my family.

I’m a full time teacher. Mom of 3.
Haven’t worked much with Chinese New Years.
I invested maybe 25 in props and my teacher wall.

You could easily work a few hours at night, or early morning before you go to work! I know lots of full time teachers that do this on the side.

  1. Tara

I have a Bachelor’s Degree (Communication & Sociology) but the only current experience I have with children is babysitting… I used to coach youth volleyball but that was about a decade ago so I don’t think it would be relevant…Would the babysitting experience really be enough to qualify in anyone’s opinion? I’d love to do this to supplement my full-time job if I could….

    • Amanda S.

I think that would be enough. I’m pretty sure they only require a Bachelor’s degree…not necessarily in education. Hope that helps!

    • Randi

Any teaching experience at all will do! Apply and just be super elaborate when describing your job. You are always teaching in one way or another!

    • Jill

Hi Tara! I think if you detail your babysitting experience and volleyball coaching experience, it could very well be enough.

    • Rhonda

      Hi Tara!

It is an easy process to find out if you are eligible for an interview. They call it the “Basic Info” step and you will find out within (usually) 24 hours if you qualify. The worst they can say is “no”. I recommend that you give it a try!

I am a stay at home/single/homeschooling mom and this has been the biggest blessing! I have been teaching for almost 6 months. I do it on my own time, before the kids get up and i can work as much or as little as i want. The hours are hard in Arizona, but it’s so nice to be done for the day by the time my kids get up. • Desiree

I teach from a little corner in our basement with a laptop on a laptop cart that I can roll out of the way when I’m not teaching. I did have to purchase a pair of headphones for $20 from Amazon. I know some teachers use earbuds though that have the mic on them.

VIPKID has been a great way for me to supplement our family income without having to give up homeschooling or family time. 8. vessiegirl

I have taught high school for 20+ years, but I’m not sure about teaching the younger kids. Does VIPKids provide enough support to bridge the expectations for non-English learners?

    • Jessica

VIPKID provides all the lesson plans for each child. In addition to classes online with a teacher each child also has a live in class experience, workbooks, and online “games” to reinforce their learning. As for your experience, that is plenty and while it may be an adjustment, the platform they use and teacher learning materials they provide are helpful. They show you exactly what is expected of the teacher and how to execute it in a classroom.

    • Danielle Schildhauer

Hi vessie girl, My husband watched me for the first few times, he has no experience with children and thought he’d be ok! They provide the lessons, any props or whatever are yours to make/print/etc. You don’t get to choose the ages, but you can let them know what you are comfortable with. I started at $8/hr, I’ve heard anywhere starting is 7.50-8.50 and you can ask for raises after your first contract/six months. If you have any other questions, let me know!

I have been working with VIPKID for a few months now. I started it on a whim and quickly fell in love with it! The kids are so cute and have so much respect for their teachers. I work full time and teach either before my kids wake up or after they go to sleep. It’s wonderful! I love that I set my own hours, and you can make up to $22 an hour!!!

Is it possible to do this while traveling?
    Or from different locations?

    • Danielle Schildhauer

      Hi there,
It’s definitely possible to do it on the go. I’ve had to use it at my parents during the winter holiday, and at a Starbucks once. I’ve seen a lot of people bring a foldable cardboard to have their stuff on the back, but I don’t normally use a lot of props anyway so I just brought the ones I normally have. • Jessica S

The article saysthey start at $14/hour, is that not the case then?

        • Danielle Schildhauer

Your base pay is about $8/ 30 minute class which equals $16 an hour. If you start class on time you get an extra $1 per class = $18/ hour. If you finish more than 45 classes a month you get an extra $1/ class which equals $20 an hour.

    • Jill

There are many teachers who teach while traveling! I have read blogs from those that do that and there’s even a facebook group for “vagabond” VIPKid teachers! Many teachers teach while on vacation, too. I just travelled to a different state and took a tri-fold backdrop and a few props with me and taught while there. You can teach from your ipad, laptop or even your phone if needed!!

    • Tp

Not really. You need props and a wall that looks like a classroom

    • Holly (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes, as long as you have a good internet connection.

  11. Sally K

Do they provide the format for teaching? Do we get to choose the age group? How much is the starting basic? Thanks

    • Danielle Schildhauer

      Hi Sally,
They provide the lessons, any props or whatever are yours to make/print/etc. You don’t get to choose the ages, but you can let them know what you are comfortable with. • Sally K

Is there minimum hrs u need to teach each week.Regarding commitment of 6mths incase for some reason u r not able to teach how does it work? Apart from laptop and mix what else do we need? Thanks for answering my question.

        • Cc

          No minimum

        • Danielle Schildhauer

There’s no minimum. When my baby wasn’t sleeping thru the night, I took some time off. When I’m on break from school, I open more spots. It’s totally up to you!

    • Mandy

They provide the slides. You just have to come up with a creative way to present the information. Pay and age group depend on how well you do in your interviews. Pay starts at $7 per 25 minute class, and goes up with experience and your interview. There are other incentives, so it usually ends up being more than that. I hope this helps!

    • Jill

Hi Sally! They choose the level that you begin teaching. After the interviews, you are assigned a level, a few levels or sometimes all levels! It’s kind of random. Once you have taught a certain amount of classes or been assigned that level for a certain amount of days, you can request a new level. I think it’s 30 days or 60 classes before you can request. Base pay is $16 per hour + per class participation of $1 and $1 extra dollar per class for every class taught after 45 classes. Classes are 25 minutes long. So minimum would be $20/hour if you teach 45 classes in one month. Email me if you have any more questions! Jill_louisa@hotmail.com

      • Sally K

Is 1 yr teaching experience a must? I volunteer in my kids class does that count?

        • Danielle Schildhauer

I don’t think that would be a problem. Talk about any experience ou have around kids. Helping out at your kids school, babysitting in the past, etc. anything helps!

      • Jill

I stand corrected. Minimum base pay would be $7/class not $8. Many people are offered more than $7/hr. to begin.

  12. WM

For those of you that do this, what has been your general average and starting pay because one person said $8/hr and another $20/hr which are vastly different…

    Thanks!

    • Mel c

Your base pay is $8/ 30 minute class which equals $16 an hour. If you start class on time you get an extra $1 per class = $18/ hour. If you finish mire than 45 classes a month you get an extra $1/ class which equals $20 an hour. The only month i didnt get the full $20 an hour was my first month when it took longer to get fully booked. Now its been a year and a half and i am easily booked anf make about 1500 a month part time.
please email me if you have any questions Melissamcampbell@gmail.com and i can help you tbrough the process.

Or follow the link below (teachers get incentives for referring new teachers)

      https://t.vipkid.com.cn/activity/popup?refereeId=2403323&refersourceid=a01

      • Mel C

Sorry there are so many typos. I was typing on my phone 🙂

    • Jessica

I was hired at $8/ class base pay. With the $2 incentives I make a minimum of $20/ hour. I have made up to $34/ hour with the incentives associated with signing up trial students and short notice bookings. My norm is around $20 though.

  13. Carol

I think the base pay is $7-9 per half hour lesson, and then with various incentives it can add up to 18-22 per hour. I love the job too but not everyone makes that much their first few months. I definitely haven’t. The newbie facebook page is full of new teachers complaining about no work while the company keeps pushing everyone to recruit. Just don’t invest a lot of money in props and things to get hired, because you may resent how long it takes to earn that back.

    • Sally K

Do we need to pay for the props?

      • Jessica

Yes you do. You are considered an independent contractor. All props and supplies are your own. There are several resources though for printing or buying props. I mostly just raided my kids old toys! They work great.

        • Leslie

Since you are considered an independent contractor, save your receipts for what you purchase as you can deduct them on your taxes. (HRB worker typing here). 🙂

          • Sally K

Roughly how much do we need to invest in props?

Why do you have to have a referral…why can’t you just apply? It just sounds like many of those business models where you make money by getting others to join.

    • Jessica

You can just apply! I did. The referral plan is to help new teachers navigate the process. It can be daunting if you are unfamiliar. But you can certainly apply without it. Best of luck on your application!

    • Jill

The referral code is also a way for the company to encourage and recruit others to apply and become teachers. It’s probably cheaper for the company to pay current teachers incentives than it is to do more advertising or hire people to advertise throughout the U.S . Plus it’s an awesome incentive and adds to the positive atmosphere for their current teachers. I personally love this perk:)

  19. Felix

Definitely High activation energy and low pay in the beginning. very little opportunity to move quickly and raise or increase the amount of money per hour

    • Jessica

I know that each persons experience is different but I had a very good beginning. I started teaching half way through a month. I got classes starting 3 days into my contract. I made about $500 the first month. My highest month to date has been about $1600. Money that I could not make any other way. It has been an awesome opportunity for me. I haven’t had to rearrange the rest of my life for it. I simply get up early. No other job has ever been this rewarding with so little inconvenience. I wear yoga pants to work everyday in my basement. I consider that pretty awesome!

  20. Katy

I am a teacher and started the application process, but was worried about the almost overly cheery examples they showed. My own kids were watching too and laughing so hard. Do you have to be SO animated? I was afraid I wouldn’t be hired because I’m not that over the top. That was my reluctance in joining.

    • Jill

No! The videos on youtube can be pretty animated but there are tons of teachers that consider themselves more serious and low key. I am not over the top animated. I do smile a lot and have a very friendly atmosphere; not at all silly or overly animated. And, of course, here is my code:) CODE: 05QXHS

      • Katy

Thank you! I am happy and smile, but not so goofy. Ha! I’m relieved to hear that’s not a necessity!!

  21. Meredith

Can someone give a real example of your working schedule? I’m in the mountain time zone and worried about how early in the morning it could be.

    • Crystelle

I lived in the MST until a few months ago and taught for VIPKID. You set your own hours, but there are peak times (times when you are more likely to get students to book you for a class.) Your peak hours would be from 4-6 am. You could likely get students to sign up for your classes until 7 am. I am not a huge fan of getting up super early, so you could open your schedule from 5:30-7 or whatever else may work for you. You could also teach on Friday or Saturday nights and not have to wake up early to teach. I would be more than happy to talk to you more about this.

I have the qualifications but I am a non-native English speaker. Is VIPKID open to potential applicant like me? Are there any non-native English speakers here that are currently VIPKID teacer? Can you please share your experience. Thank you.

    • Jill

VIPKid will not hire you if you have an accent other than American. I saw a youtube video of a VIPKid teacher that, I thought, had a Mexican accent. I grew up and live around a big population of Mexican immigrants and 1st and 2nd generation Mexican-Americans and am very familiar with their accents, so I may have picked up on it better than someone else. So, it depends on how thick your accent is. An accent can be learned, though. Actors do it all the time:). My code:) 05QXHS

      • Clara

        Thanks Jill.

  24. leslie

I am guessing all you current VIP teachers know this, but manage your taxes well. If you are making 1000 a month, you might want to send quarterly payments to the IRS. You will need to pay 15.3% in social security taxes, your current tax rate for federal taxes (most people are 15% or 25%), and you might even want to pay quarterly payments to the state so you will not be surprised at tax time.

I am a volunteer tax preparer for AARP and I am also a paid preparer. Email me at lesliearney3@yahoo.com if you have any other questions about what I am talking about. I would be happy to answer them.

I have been with VIPKid and love the experience. The kids are amazing and really want to learn English. The best part about the job is the flexibility. 28. Kimberly

Can you set your own schedule, at various times because I need flexibility?

    • Mel c

you only open times you are available to teach and the students book you. Its completely flexible.

    • Jessica

Yes you can choose how many hours and when you work each week. The only limitation is that it has to be during hours that a child in China would be available for classes. For instance, they would not be awake to have a class at 12 noon Chicago time. They would all be asleep! So you can compare your time zone to Beijing using worldtimebuddy.com to see which hours will fit the best for you.
I live in CST. I teach daily from 6-8 am and 7-10 in Friday and Saturday evening. I could teach earlier in the morning and later at night if I chose to. It is all up to me how I plan my schedule.

    Hello,

I applied and put no teaching experience and didn’t get selected but am hoping to apply again and get hired.

I actually was a Sunday school teacher at church for a while and tutored kids in college. So I am hoping to spin that.

Do they check for past employers? Bc this was like 12 years ago and I wouldn’t even know who to give as a reference.

    Someone help! Bethtamara@gmail.com

Yep, spin that girl!! Give it a try and see what happens. I really do no think they check with past employers. People go through the hiring process so quickly sometimes, that there is just no way. Good luck!! My code 😉 05QXHS

Yes Sunday school does count. Make sure to list extensively ALL previous experience. They did not check my references. I don’t know if that is always true though. They did require a copy of my degree.

I read that you need a passport to work here. Is that true?

Can someone describe their personal experience communicating with the students?

    • Jill

Hi! At the beginning of every class, in the beginning, you say “My name is Teacher so-and-so!” “What is your name?” Most kids have been taught this exchange at home or in VIPKid classrooms and can say “My name is…” then you say “How old are you?” and show them a birthday cake or something and they say “I am 5 years old”. Then you skip to the next slide and teach whatever is on that slide…smnthng like “Are you a boy?” sometimes they will understand and sometimes they won’t. If they cannot answer you, you show them how! You say “I am a boy!” Then you cup your ear and they repeat you or you hold up a microphone and get them to repeat you. If that doesn’t work you pull out your awesome puppet or stuffed animal and talk to it to teach them how the exchange goes. For the older students, they can totally answer you. If they cannot, you say what the answer should be and cup your ear like you’re listening and waiting for them to respond. So easy! 🙂

My son has his bachelor degree and is currently set to get masters as a LPC, license practitioner in counseling . He works with kids and has 7 yr old. He is struggling to pay bills and all the expenses of graduation . He don’t have much time with work school and family. You think he could make some extra money at this? Also how long does it take to get paid and how is it paid to you? Thanks so much!

    • Jill

I think he could. It takes about 3-7 days to get hired and I think, as a male, he has a very good chance of being booked to teach right away. Pay day is around the 15the of every month and is direct deposited into his bank acct. he would do great! He has good experience:)

Does anyone with a full time job do this? I am a sixth grade teacher looking for extra money to pay off bills. I currently work full time. Also wondering if I could do this in the summer too.. appreciate any advice you can share 😀

    • Theresa

Hello. I work for VIPKID and I love it. You can work with VIPKID and work a full time job. You block off your hours that you want to work so you control what hours you are available to work. The classes last 25 minutes. They can start anytime from 9:00 pm till 9 am. You decide what are you want to work during this time frame. It would be a great job to work during the summer. If you are interested or anyone else reading this post. Please feel free to use my link. Thank you.

My questions: is there a minimum number of hours each week? I’m wondering what happens when you go on vacation, a kids gets sick, etc. and you can’t work that week?

Anyone share a lesson “gone bad” and how you handle it? What if you get a kid who just won’t focus or cooperate?
