Hi Hipsters! It’s Jennifer, one of Hip’s Sidekicks! 😃

If you always manage to buy just the perfect size avocado, then the Avo Saver Avocado Holder is for you! 🥑 If not, well…

Have you ever been so excited about a product, and then SO let down, you wanted to tell everyone about it?  Well, that just happened to me. I was super excited to get this Avo Saver Avocado Holder for only $4.79 a few weeks ago.

I usually only use 1/2 an avocado at once. My current method to save the other half isn’t hard. I just use Glad Cling wrap because it seals out the air to keep my avocado green and fresh for a few days.  The Avocado Saver looked so easy and convenient –plus it reduces waste, so I had to get it.

The idea is that the Avo Saver stores and keeps cut Avocados fresher by reducing exposure to the air. The seed fits right into the middle, and you lay the avocado down flat. It also has a rubber strap that holds the avocado in place. As you can see above, it does hold it nicely in place!

My first try was terrible. The seed was smaller than the hole and air got to it (air will ruin an avocado fast).

Attempt #2 – As you can see, the seed was too big and left space for air to get in. This meant another ruined avocado.

At this point, it’s not worth it to me. I can’t find the perfect size avocado to fit into the Avo Saver – so I give up! 🤷‍♀️

I’m going back to the old tried and true method with Glad Cling wrap. So, unless you have an avocado that fits perfectly in this keeper – AND can always buy the perfect sized avocado, I’d opt not to buy this gadget!

Avocados turn brown form oxidation with air. Another way to help prevent the browning is to rub a tiny bit of citrus juice (i.e. lemon juice or lime juice) on it. I’ve never been able to taste it the next time I use the avocado.

    • cristine

      My thought too! Works great!

    • Jennifer (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks, Jenny! I have heard of that, but am afraid of tasting the lemon or lime on it.

    • mikeB

too many people buy these gadgets and there are simple free alternatives… this is a waste of money

  2. Janet310

Lemon keeps it from turning brown, or if you make guacamole, a splash of milk will also do the trick.

I recently discovered a mind blowing solution to this problem: Trader Joe’s sells very affordable bags of MINI avocados! MINI! I always buy them because the price is great and they’re the perfect portion for me. You’re welcome โœŒ๏ธ

    • Jennifer (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Mini Avocados?! Awesome!

    • Rainbow

I second mini avocados from Trader Joe’s. I was going to be the first one I thought but you beat me to it ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Wren

Mini avocados!? I have never heard of or seen these, I’ll have to find them! They sound cute ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Momx1boy3girls

Leave the seed in the part youโ€™re saving and wrap it up. It works perfect.

    • Brie

Yes leaving the seed in is supposed to help too!

  5. LC

    What an interesting invention!

  6. Tiffany

It’s like whoever invented this gadget never even tested it! Thank you for the review! ๐Ÿ‘

    • Jennifer (Hip2Save Sidekick)

You are welcome, Tiffany! I’m not sure they tried it.

  7. Kris

Iโ€™ve frozen avocados before if I can get a stock up price. I cut in half, dip in lemon juice and freeze. They come out a little softer but I usually use for toast, sandwiches or guacamole anyway

    • SandraNYC

      Iโ€™m going to try this!

  8. Rwild

    Fruit fresh works for us.

  9. Debbie

Thanks so much for your review.

I just leave my other half in the fridge unwrapped with the seed still in it, then when I use it (normally the next day so it isn’t too bad) I cut a thin slice to remove the brown dry outer part and also take out the seed. I find they still brown regardless of whether I store them in a baggie or with lemon juice so I just take the lazy route and don’t do anything. Haha

    • Brie

      Iโ€™ve done this too!!! Haha

    • Pharmchick

This is me all day lol.

  11. Roro82

Just put it in a ziploc bag with a chopped onion. Wont turn brown ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Jennifer (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Will it taste like an onion?

    • Belle

I do this too! Except I put it in tupperware with chopped onions at the bottom. Doesn’t taste like onions

  12. Amie

Thanks, yeah these niche products look great…..

  13. katy

My secret? Just eat the whole avocado ๐Ÿ˜‚

    • Jennifer (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Good secret, katy!

    • Lily

Yep- no leftovers in this house either LOL

    • Melissaan

Yep! Definitely the best solution to the problem. In my personal experience it works 100% of the time!

    • Rainbow

      ๐Ÿ™‚ love it.

  14. Sarah

Use a 16 oz freezer safe mason jar with a plastic lid. No need for cling wrap. You just have to keep the oxygen off your avocado.

I use them for fridge leftovers, freezing beans and rice, freezing individual servings of soups, everything.

    • Jennifer (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thanks for the tip, Sarah!

  15. Barbara

Honestly Iโ€™ve never had an experience that I need to take care of avocado leftovers ๐Ÿฅ‘
My husband, my 5 years old and I are all avocado lovers and we can have one each if we found them on sale. Otherwise we share 1or 2 avocados and finish it with no time to let its color change. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹

    • carissadiane

I have this. Threw out the big one and the little one works just fine. There’s still a slight browning but a quick scrape and it’s gone. Use it all the time.

  16. Ph

Avocados are always cheap in Texas Aldi $.49. HEB $.59 buy and freeze for smoothies or spread on toast

    • Jen D

Lately in AZ sprouts has them for 33c (3/$1) during their 72 hour weekend sales. Love avocado and salsa with my eggs for breakfast. Keeps me full until lunch!

    • AZinOZ

Always seem to be $1 each in Kansas for normal size. $1.29 for “large”.

  17. Belle

I usually use half an avocado for my food, then I use the other half to make myself an avocado milkshake. SO GOOD.

  18. mel

Usually dh will eat 1/2 and I’ll eat the other so we don’t have leftover halves. But there are days one of us might not want the other half, so I just put the skin back on top of the other half with the seed, then stick in a small container. I’ve found the Rubbermaid Brilliance (I think it’s 1.5 C size) works best, b/c it seems to lock the air out!

    • Jennifer (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I love Rubbermaid Brilliance containers! Thanks for the great idea, mel!

  19. magdalena

I love my avocado saver! I’ve had it and used it for the last 4 years. I never had this problem. I do like to put a drop of lemon on the avocado itself before I put it in the saver. It works for me ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Katie

This is why the pig in me eats the entire thing in one shot!

  21. Namcy

Ebay has this for a little over 2$ and free ship

  22. HipMomof3

Bummer! I force myself to eat the whole thing so it doesn’t waste. My cholesterol is on the high side, but my good cholesterol is higher than most peoples. I give this credit to the avocado. Love them!

  23. pnwremod

I bought this, and the strap came cracked already. Wrote Amazon about my discontent. They credited my account. And I was able to keep the avocado contraption! It has been about a year. The strap is almost cracked all the way through, but it is still working!

  24. joni

im a pig so I eat the whole avocado but your article was hysterical thank you for a good laugh and I feel your pain nothing like a brown avocado

    • Jennifer (Hip2Save Sidekick)

You are welcome! Glad to give you a good laugh! LOL ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Sarah

      Made me laugh ๐Ÿ˜‚

  25. KED

    Mini avocadoes-YAY!

  26. nancy

I have one and when that happens I just take out the put. Works fine.

  27. Edy

My friend has a avocado tree Mini avocados eat one at a time no waste here ! Canโ€™t wait until July thatโ€™s when I get a basket full ,

    • Jennifer (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Sounds yummy!

  28. Judy

I use inexpensive coffee filters from 99cent store the ones that have flat bottom and fluted sides. I discard pit and place remaining half on filter then gently press all around the cut side keeping oxygen out works well

    • Eve

Will try this next time. Thank you.

      • Jennifer (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Wow, that’s a great idea, too!

  29. Pam

How about using the empty half avocado to cover the remaining half and secure it with a tooth pick. Perfect fit .

  30. Tiffani

I just saw a piece on T.V. that said to put it cut side down in a container of water and cover, said it would last about 3 days.

  31. Rebecca in TX

I just throw the extra half in a small plastic leftover container with a lid and my avocados stay nearly perfect for days.

  32. Dawn

I’ve stored the uneaten half on top of onion slices in a container. Works pretty good for me

  33. MyOpinion

We have one of these avocado savers and love it. We’ve been using it for a couple years. It looks like you cut off to much of the avocado, letting the air get into it. (Not the pit being too big.)
