These have no padding = these are not cycling shorts!

No, they are, in fact, cycling shorts. They are not road cycling shorts, but they are mountain biking shorts ~ that’s why they are baggy. You are supposed to wear underwear with padding underneath these shorts. They have zippers you can open for ventilation. My husband is a HUGE mountain biking nut and he owns an endless collection of a high-end brand of these types of baggy shorts. He also owns an equally endless collection of padded underoos to wear underneath.

Really? If they don’t come with the padded insert, what makes them cycling shorts versus non-cycling shorts? My mountain biking shorts came with the insert.
What makes them cycling shorts are the various features that are specially adapted for mountain biking. It’s kind of like saying, “what makes swimming trunks, swimming trunks? They look like regular shorts.”
For example, what makes them cycling shorts is the material they are made of ~ fast drying, wicking etc. They also come with zippers that you can open and close for ventilation when you get hot. In other words, you open a zipper ~ not to access a pocket, but instead to expose a mesh panel that lets air flow. Also, special pocket placement for storing energy gels, energy bars, etc etc.
I have Zoic mountain biking shorts, and they came with the padded inserts. These are just shorts like any other shorts that you could wear an insert with.
