Same thing appeared to me when I tried to buy as a gift.
So I selected join. Entered my account information. The site eventually redirected me back to the page after I went through all of the security stuff. I hit the join now button once again and was able to go directly into the payment option with the discounted price.

Yes, once you load the card onto your account it will set you up for a subscription. However, you are able to cancel or set your account to not auto-renew at any time! We updated the post with this info as well, thank you!
you can cancel or renew any time. i usually wait for H2S to put out a discounted deal and renew that way. you do not have to renew through microsoft on auto date.
Has anyone been able to get the Give as a Gift option to work? I usually buy this for my nephew but it’s regular price when I go through all the motions of buying as a gift.

Huge huge pain to buy this. I can’t even explain all the hoops it is making me jump through. My phone recently got ruined in water. Waiting for a new one to come. They want to text me a code for my protection except I can’t get a code. LOL So I tried using my husbands number and they are freezing any changes for 30 days for my protection. Just a big mess and not worth the hassle. Hope it works better for everyone else.
If you do the other “join” option it will give you the $39.99 price but then it makes you subscribe…and that means agreeing to be charged $59.99 next year.
