The best ways to shop and save with these jcpenney shopping tips — clearance section with sale signage

I find I’m spending more time at JCP.

To be honest, I used to hate to shop at JCPenney (the cool kids were in Abercrombie), but now their savings are the best. Remember the time JCP tried to save money by doing away with sales altogether (and shocker, it didn’t work out)? Thankfully, they’ve been pumping out deals left and right ever since.

Collin even shared some of her amazing finds from this insane 90% off sale in a LIVE video! This prompted me to head into my own local JCP, and to share my favorite ways to save.

Search for coupons before heading to the store.

I prepare for savings before I even walk in the door at JCP, so I never leave the house without checking for coupons to print out or to save to my phone. If you’re new to the wonders of JCPenney and none of the sales are immediately eye-catching, definitely sign up for their text and email alerts and get a 25% off coupon on a future purchase!

Please note the coupon will only work on select styles, but it’s worth signing up for the potential savings. Another easy way to save is through their rewards program.

Earn points on purchases with JCPenney Rewards.

It’s a pretty simple rewards program that lets you accumulate points on any purchase at JCPenney or For every $2 spent, you’ll earn 1 point which can be redeemed for a $10 reward once 200 points are reached. If you have a JCPenney credit card, you’ll earn points faster with a $1 = 1 point earning system.

The best ways to shop and save with these jcpenney shopping tips — join the jcpenney rewards program

Better yet, signing up scores you a 20% off coupon sent by email! Overall, while it’s not the best department store rewards program we’ve ever seen, signup is free, and you may as well get some points for shopping.

Now that you’ve done all the prep work, here’s how to shop once you’re there. Luckily, JCP isn’t shy about highlighting their sale sections of the store. You’ll want to keep your eye out for the colors red and pink.

The Red Zone is where you’ll find clearance.

It’s pretty great that all the marked down goods are grouped together in a very easy to find section. If you go during a hot sale, you’ll likely find these piece marked down even further with an additional percentage off.

But sometimes the clothes and accessories can get moved around by other shoppers or associates, which brings us to the other desired color — pink!

Pink tags mean the item is on clearance.

Be on the lookout for pink stickers. These show the marked down prices along with the marked down percentage. You’ll be able to stack some huge savings during additional percentage off periods!

You can also download the app as a price checker if you’re not sure if a product is marked down or not. It’s a great way to get the lowest price possible. That said, there is always a chance the price could be less elsewhere, which you can then price check too.

Even sweeter, there are coupons that will work on top of clearance prices too! For example, when JCPenney had that crazy sale and Collin rushed into the store, they had this deal scenario up for grabs:

Weatherproof Infant Jacket $6 (regularly $60)
Show coupon on phone in-store (15% off clearance)
Final cost just $5.10
*In-store only

That’s a savings of a little over 90%! While that sale has ended, this is just an example of the awesome coupons + clearance opportunities that pop up every now and then!

Price check against other stores for an additional 5% off.

Yup! If you happen to find the item listed at a lower price at eligible JCP competitors, you could score an additional 5% savings off the matched price! How sweet is that?! While the price matching policy applies to a wide selection of items, major appliances, electronics, and fitness equipment are not eligible for the extra 5% off.

The best ways to shop and save with these jcpenney shopping tips — price match guarantee sign

You can also check which occasionally features different pricing than in the store. Ask a manager if you can get a price match (it’s up to their discretion to honor it or not). Keep in mind the 5% discount will not be applied to this type of price check.

Even sweeter, this policy is valid up to 14 days after your purchase, so should the price drop lower at JCP or at another competitor, you’ll still be able to get the lower price plus 5% off! Oh, and as if this policy couldn’t get any better, there are NO blackout dates, so the policy still stands for Black Friday! 🛍️

JCPenney kind of makes it a no-brainer to shop their stores, so it’s easy to encourage other people to do the same. If you’re tying the knot or starting a family, consider going through JCPenney for your registry! Your guests will have no problem finding a gift for you within their desired budget given their huge selection and frequent sales.

You get 10% off items you purchase for your own gift registry.

Hosting a gift registry with JCPenney gives you so many ways to save and lends a hand to people buying from your list. Even better? You’ll get 10% off any items that remain on your list if you decide to purchase them yourself!

The best ways to shop and save with these jcpenney shopping tips — dinnerware sets at jcpenney

And seriously, JCP has everything from dinnerware to small kitchen appliances to linens and so much more. You can even add bathroom items or pajamas to take on your honeymoon! Adding items is easy, and you can do it from the comfort of your own home.

Speaking of which, if shopping online is more your style, here’s a simple trick to avoid paying for shipping.

Have $25+ purchases shipped to the store for free.

JCP’s free home shipping threshold is $99, which to me is just too high. On the bright side, as long as you spend a minimum of $25, you can have most items shipped to the store. If the item is already in stock at your local store, you can even pick it up the same day — nothing like getting your shopping done from the couch! 🙌

The best ways to shop and save with these jcpenney shopping tips — ship to store option on product page

It’s a great option to save you time since you’re not browsing through the crowded clearance selection, and you won’t miss out on items you may have otherwise overlooked.

And while you’re online, make sure to hit up some of our favorite discount websites to save you even more – with gift cards.

Discounted JCP gift cards can save you up to 12%!

We love this method of saving even more on our overall purchases, and it’s so easy to apply them to your order. Check out Raise and Gift Card Granny to view their selection of discounted gift cards.

Be sure to double check the fine print for exclusions and conditions, since some cards are good for only in-store or online-only redemption.

If you end up making a purchase while in-store, you may not realize you’re getting a coupon with every purchase. In fact, it could be hidden at the bottom of your shopping bag!

Save the receipt for 10% off on your next trip.

At the bottom of each printed receipt, you’ll find an access code for a survey which rewards you with a 10% off coupon on your next purchase! It’s a simple survey, and I got my code within minutes after submitting the survey.

Even better, you can use the coupon for 24 hours in case you forget to include an item in your order or at the in-store checkout — sweet!

So, who’s lacing up and heading to JCPenney?!

I LOVE JCPENNEY. It was my first job when i first moved to Florida. Sadly my store closed and now have to drive 45 mins to visit. I only shop the clearance area when they have a $10 off $25 store coupon or 50% off total store coupon. Levi’s, Nike etc is always excluded but you can find great cheap items.

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

What a great first job! The clearance section is definitely the spot to shop, and like you said, the store coupons make it even sweeter! Thanks for reading!

  2. vidhi

Agree! JCPenney is offering great deals. Love this sore.

I love JCPenney but I feel overwhelmed by the clearance areas in my 2 local stores. They are a total mess. XXS cloths mixed in with XXL and stuff hanging off the hangers and dangling on the floor everywhere. I can only look at the piles of clearance stuff for a couple minutes before I get too anxious and have to move to a neater part of the store lol is this just me?

    • Deb

Nope, me too. The OCD in me wants to organize it all

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Haha I know what you mean, Sarah! I need to have a coffee and breakfast in me before I even think about sifting through the clearance — it helps me power through. 😄 There’s a lot of inventory and it definitely takes some work but most times it has a great pay off!

We got some ridiculously good deals this Labor day weekend. There was a lot of clearance, it was at 50% off and then you could apply the $10 off $25 coupon. I bought quality dresses for $9, Stafford formal shirts for $3-$10, formal tops for $3-$7 and more. We stocked up on some really nice quality clothes at really low prices!

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

What great finds! Their holiday weekend sales are usually filled with deals and then additional savings on top of that — I love it! Thanks for sharing your recent JCP steals!

  5. Julie

I feel like JCP is the best kept secret in town. I love shopping there, and anytime someone asks me where I got something, it’s from there! I get nice, in style dress shirts and other pieces for under $5 often.

  6. Kristy

I LOVE shopping at JCP!! Their Labor Day sale was AMAZING! I got myself 2 swimsuits. For my son, I found him 2 swim trunks for next summer, a pair of Nike shorts, another pair of black gym shorts, Nike tennis shoes, and a pair of camo flip flops. For my oldest daughter, I found 2 swimsuits for next summer, 2 shirts, and an outfit (top with leggings and a cute heart locket necklace). For my youngest daughter ,I got her a shirt and a pair of Nike sandals. ALL of those items came to $100 and then I got $20 back in rewards. I just discovered that REWARDS and BONUS BUCKS can be used on toys. All of JCP’s other coupons exclude toys, but not the rewards! They had a dinosaur lego that my son wants for Christmas. Plus, the lego set was $5 cheaper elsewhere so they price matched and then used my reward bonus bucks. I was so happy to get Lego’s for “free”. 🙂

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Kristy, I LOVE that you stocked up for next summer. It’s so smart! And you sound like a JCP saving pro — I need to tag along during your next shopping trip! 😆 Thank you for sharing your latest JCP finds with us!

  7. Amanda

I love JCP!! I have been a loyal customer for quite some time, but when they sent me the 50% off coupon this past week, and I used that with all the crazy clearance prices, I was able to save 90% on most items. I even went ahead and replaced my husband ‘s wedding band, because the coupon made the band an extra 50% off…I had already done quite a bit of price shopping on it, and knew that with the sale and coupon it was the best price in town by far!

  8. Karen

I love JcPenney! I scored some grrat deals during their Labor Day sale. I got 10 tops, 4 shorts and a pair of shoes for me; 4 polos and a pair of jean shorts for hubby and a dress for my toddler all for $74.xx since they had extra 50% off clearance and a $10/$25 coupon to stack. I was so happy!

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

That’s quite the impressive JCP haul, Karen! That’s great you were able to use the coupon on top of the additional 50% off clearance to score so much stuff for the whole family 😁 Thank you for sharing!

  9. Ashley

I’m so confused… the title is how to stack coupons, the Facebook link to this article was how to stack…. nowhere in this article does it state how to stack coupons. Hm…

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi Ashley! So sorry for the confusion! We wanted to highlight all the ways to save at JCPenney, most of which can be used in conjunction with one another. We’ve added in a specific scenario of how coupons can stack on top of a sale or clearance as an example of potential savings opportunities — hope that helps!

  10. Dana

JCP is still a pretty good spot to shop, but they were even better last year when they used to give away their $10 off $10 coupons. I’m so sad they haven’t done that once this year. FREE items were the best!! 🙂

  11. Marti

Was just there last week and got a super cute dress, on clearance, good for summer, fall, or winter for $2.58! I picked up some other clearance items for myself and baby and used the $10 off $25 and left with four shirts, dress, duster, and baby clothes for $15. Cannot beat the clearance racks!

  12. L

I love JCP but I actually LOVED when they did away with sale prices. There prices where amazing and then they did clearance on those low prices combined with rewards and coupons. I walked out once with 30 tank tops and shirts from clearance for $32 after 1 coupon, one $10 reward and tax! I miss that.

  13. Linda

If somebody has $10 reward to spare I would really appreciate it.

My first “real” job was there, too! I honestly don’t know how they stay open with their prices so low and the amazing deals/savings you can get. It would be a sad day if they ever went out of business. My favorite store! I can ALWAYS find something! 😄

  15. Charlene

They no longer have free ship to store for $25 online purchases. It cost $3.95 to ship to store. Maybe its different in other areas.

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hmm, when clicking through the shipping link above, I still find the details to show Free Store delivery with an order of $25 or more. It does however “exclude select manufacturer-shipped items and truck-delivered items.” Hope that helps!

  16. Emily

I have always loved JCP! In fact, ai just bought a jewelry armoire from there last week. It arrived broken and they sent a new one right away. All my cellular shades for my windows are from JCP. Clothes. Shoes, purses. I am pretty sure I got a prom dress there back in the day. Me and my JCP credit card have been good friends over the years.

  17. Pamela Gohde

    Hurray for JCP.
I have been shopping in stores in WI and AZ for over 50yrs. We had a local outlet store I took all my out of state friends family to until it closed.
Now some shopping online with new smartphone.
I own wear their items for years. Awesome quality and savings.
