I was able to keep my son rear facing until he was 4 with a Diono (he is very big for his age), and we would have maybe been able to go to 5 if we could have configured it that way next to our younger son’s rear facing seat in our Elantra.
I found in the long run these seats are cheaper because it’s the only seat you need. My first car seat was a Snugride 35, then my daughter outgrew that one within 8 months. So when you add another car seat then booster seat, multiple seats can really add up. I think the quality of our Diono is really great and we’ve had our almost 5 years.
The main reason these seats get so much praise is the space they save. I have three across in my mid size suv with no problems. I’ve heard of people fitting three across in sedans. That said, they are very heavy. The seat part does fold up, making it slightly less awkward to move or transport. I have found that installing and uninstalling seems to be a lot easier than other car seats that I’ve previously had and the LATCH fasteners are really easy to use. They automatically lock when pushed in far enough and release quickly by pushing a button. The tether strap is very easy to loosen and tighten.
