Burger King Charged Customer Over $1,000 for a 1¢ Whopper
Today is the last day that you can score a Whopper sandwich for just a penny when you head to your local McDonald’s and order via the Burger King app. Our new team member, Stetson, actually tested out the entire process at McDonald’s and then at Burger King, and it worked for him (watch Stetson’s deal testing experience here).
However, not everyone was as lucky. In fact, you may want to double check your credit card statement after making your purchase to ensure you’re not being charged a whopper for your Whopper. 😳
That’s because one California customer, Boyce Harvey, accidentally got charged $1,093.91 instead of 1¢ for the Whopper deal. 😱 He selected the Whopper deal in the app, but when he went to pick up his order, the manager said he/she couldn’t find it. Harvey then selected another deal but when he left, his jaw dropped when he saw that he was charged nearly $1,100 and now has a huge overdraft on his account. Talk about a whopper of a mistake! 😬
However, Burger King is trying to straighten out the mess with Harvey:
“We’ve seen tremendous success with the Whopper Detour promotion since its launch last week. We can confirm that the case concerning this guest is related to an isolated technical issue, and we’re taking this very seriously. We’ve been in direct contact with the guest to ensure a full refund is issued immediately.”
Hopefully, this customer will have it his way at Burger King from now on.
Omg!! Burger King should give that guy free Whoppers for life for that mistake!!
With you on that one. Hopefully they can settle without a lawsuit.
Good Lord, I hope it wouldn’t involve a lawsuit either. The right thing for BK to do is pay the overdraft charge (although a simple call to my bank would have remedied that in about 5 seconds since it’s an obvious mistake) and offer the man a free meal. How do these stories even make the news?
I completely agree! It’s going to be a lot of wasted time for him trying to straighten this out with the credit card company. Something similar happened to me, of course on a much smaller scale. I once went to the Steak n Shake drive through & ordered a large fries. I too made the mistake of paying through the app. Right after leaving I noticed the lady had charged me $15 for a large fries! I immediately went inside to tell this girl, but it was obvious she didn’t care. She disappeared into the back & the manager came basically putting me on a guilt trip that she’d return my money back, but it’d have to come out of her paycheck.
I left out that I had a gift card migrated on the the app, hince why I went inside to get my money back.
That was a lie, they can’t do that, take money from a paycheck for a refund to a customer. That in itself is a lawsuit. No one would be working for fast food if that was the case, as many people who want refunds because there was cheese when they asked for no cheese? The manager just didn’t want to have to explain to corporate why she had to refund $15. Managers always try to get away with not refunding. Makes them look bad.
Omg I had no idea about this promotion! That’s hilarious! Great job, BK! I love it! 🤣
Why is this news? What should be news is he paid it! When I get a bill that is crazy, I refuse to buy the item. The news is this guy apparently paid a thousand dollars for a burger, that guy is no COUPONER!
BK billed his credit card incorrectly, he didn’t agree to that amount, he thought he was only being charged 1 cent.
If he had a credit card in the wallet in lieu of using a debit card, he would be able to protect himself better. Overdraft is a hint it was a debit card used which makes the checking account vulnerable to these types of errors.
I just picked up one whopper. After driving half way home .. looked at tab and was charged double. Burger King on Bristol np beach.
Ok, Lenore…
That must’ve been one amazing burger
amazingly disappointing!
Wow! They should not only refund the full amount but the overdraft fee too. What a mess!
Something similar happened to me a couple years ago when I took my family bowling. There was a new lady working the register and she didn’t know how to use the credit card machines that you punch the amount in. She charged us $190 for what should have been a $19 bill. It took us almost 2 hours to straighten it all out with the manager. I was trying to be understanding and patient since she was new but then she overcharged us AGAIN for our dinner bill and then she got mad at us for telling her manager. Needless to say, we left extremely irritated and never went back again.
I had a lady at McDonald’s that charged for an item I didn’t order. When I asked for a refund she didn’t want to tell the manager (I overheard her making SOOO many mistakes before I ordered… and after) she tried to give me money OUT OF HER BRA!!!! So she wouldn’t have to talk to her manager!!! I know she is probably long gone but I still can’t bring myself to eat at that restaurant.
That is crazy but funny!
I once paid a bill using a check (many, many moons ago) and it was the $6.52. The company or the bank, whichever… put the check through as $652.00!
This has actually happened to me several years ago. They charged me $2000 for a $20 purchase. They said it wouldn’t go thru that they reversed the charge but the reversal never showed up on my bank statement so I had to work with both my bank and my local Burger King to get it corrected. I had just gotten bonus from my job so I was also making extra payments on Bill’s so I had several overdraft fees due to it. It was finally straightened out but what a mess.
Joann fabric did this to me years ago. A 60 buck order…but she rang it 3 times. WHEN she went to take 2 off…she charged me twice. Took forever for me to get my money back and dud overdraft me…the bank was nice and took it off. Rrr.
Who doesn’t look at their receipt before they leave the cashier.
Lol! I checked every item on my receipt as soon as I get it. 😂 but I think this incident is different. He ordered thru Burger King App.
Me. I have 3 kids in tow everywhere I go. I’m usually just trying to get out of wherever I am before one of them has a meltdown. It’s real life. So many self-righteous couponers. Lol!!
Yep. Everyone is perfect.
Read the post, he used the app to pay! Therefore, it’s not ones fault! What happens is you have these employees telling you one total & charging something totally different. Then, one is shocked when you get your receipt & the damage has been done. Usually happens at the drive thru where you can’t physically see the register for yourself before paying.
My husband. He never looks at the receipt. One time, we got someone else’s big check with multiple mimosas at brunch. We had OJ and coffee. Had I not looked, he would have just paid it!
I hesitate to ask him for a grocery pickup now. No telling what he’s willing to pay there!
That sounds like my guy! He once brought home a $75 3-pound roast!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT HAD to go back!
He bought $10 EACH pumpkins this Halloween, when the sign said $5, and didn’t say anything. I went back for the refund.
my husband 🙁
I just picked up one whopper. After driving half way home .. looked at tab and was charged double. Burger King on Bristol np beach. Will
Say this again. We did not look at receipt until
On way home! Now, let’s
Do something about this. I guess I have to go back to establishment.
Jokes on them if they try that with me. I used a prepaid visa credit card with only .25 left on it to pay for mine. Take it all i dont care lol
It’s my belief they will fix this probably to very much his advantage I like this story
I was never refunded from the Walmart purchase I made when the Google homes were 2 for $18. Not the same thing… Still, I was charged for an order they cancelled n never refunded. Did anyone else get refunded?
Call them asap. Sometimes orders go to limbo and you have to make them aware. It’s happens everywhere Ugg, kohl’s, joann, etc.
I got charges 100.00 for a 10.00 box of donuts, I had to provide a bank statement showing the amount and was issued a refund minus the cost of my donuts.
After the hassle they should have given you the whole amount back… your time is worth more than a free box of donuts
I once went to the post office and spent $43.55 on postage. Checked my bank statement the following day and was charged $4,355. It took nearly 3 months for the USPS to refund my money. It was a nightmare.
Burger King app has been broken for several weeks. I’m not sure why it works for some people, and not others. Luckily, McD can have all my business.
Boo…Straight terrible !!!
Reading through these comments, some of you are CLEARLY not reading the whole post! Please read before posting opinions. He did NOT agree to paying $1000 for a burger, like some of you think he did!
Wal-Mart never refunds me for stuff I ordered online and ending up returning them. I have to keep up with my bills all the time
