I remember those early days as a parent and being so afraid of SIDS. But, I hate that a company preys on those fears and developed this overpriced product (geared towards normal newborns) that is likely to frighten parents even more due to the risk of product failure and artifact. (When a newborn truly is at risk, such as a baby born preterm, with continuing lung issues, parents are trained on how to use a medical grade cardiorespiratory monitor and are sent home from the hospital with such.)

If you’re on the fence with this, I highly recommend it!! I’m a NICU nurse and bought this for my baby and it gives such piece of mind! I sleep much better and have had ZERO false alarms. Absolutely love this!

I completely disagree with you… I had a premature baby who was born 11 weeks early after 35 days in the NICU, he was sent home without any monitors. While in the hospital his heart rate would drop below 85 (when he was in deep sleep) which would set the monitor off but he was always able to bring it back up on his own.
We bought the OWLET for piece of mind. I was able to sleep without worrying. In 4 months, it went off twice because his heart rate dropped low.
      What I love:
      – you can monitor your baby’s oxygen and heart rate from your cellphone
      – the alarm goes off when the heart rate is 65 (vs the 85 at the hospital) and I’m not sure about the oxygen level (that wasn’t his issue)
      – it comes in 3 different sizes as the baby grows
      – the company sends messages as the baby ages
      – the price may seem like a lot but when you calculate it, it’s less than a dollar a day for a year
I highly recommended this but just for premature babies but for new parents.

This helped to alert my friend when her baby stopped breathing in the middle of night after developing RSV. She loves it. To each their own. I have had 4 and never used anything like this, but I would have if it had been around.

I agree with you, Deb. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against using these monitors based on a study of infants aged 0-6 months that were either hospitalized in generalized pediatric wards or cardiology wards. When compared to the hospital grade monitors the infants were wearing simultaneously with these consumer market monitors, it was shown that they often give inaccurate readings. The Owlet did perform better than the Baby Vida which would sometimes show normal oxygen saturation levels when they were in fact, according to the hospital monitors, dangerously low.

I agree Deb. I think it’s a great idea to give parents peace of mind but it’s ridiculous they charge so much, because they know parents “will do anything” for their kids.

I loved ours! Especially since my niece had died the previous year to SIDS. It was the greatest thing to sleep at night knowing I would be alerted if anything was wrong with my daughter. I’ve used it many times when my kids were up to toddlers to check their oxygen levels when I thought they might have RSV. Greatest invention ever. Just gifted ours to my sister who will now use it for her soon to be baby.

We love our Owlet! Such a piece of mind when sleeping!! We have used it for two babies now and we use it Every.Single.Day. So it is worth the hefty price tag. This is a great deal! I am going to look into purchasing on amazon with HSA reimbursement. It would be a great gift for our best friend!

I WISH one of my babies had needed something like this! Oh how I envy the parents of babies who sleep!

      • Amy

I had the non-sleeping variety too, Mary! The first time my oldest slept more than a 2 hour stretch we were months into parenting. I woke up in a panic trying to lift my husband to breastfeed! He was not amused. The thought of something being wrong with my baby never crossed my mind at that point. Oh sleep deprivation, I don’t miss you at all!

These were on clearance at my Sam’s club for 199.81

Oh cool! Thanks for the heads up on your find!

  6. Jennifer

We bought the owlet and the new cam for our new baby and we love it. It gives me peace of mind at night which is nice because I felt anxiety with our other kids worrying all night. We haven’t had any false alarms and the new Camera is AWESOME.

    • Jennifer

On a side note… maybe sure you don’t set the sock on the couch… my husband left it on the couch, the Velcro got stuck to a dirty diaper and ended up in the trash! Hours later and a panic attack my husband found it in our dumpster ewwwwww!

      • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh no! Thanks for the warning!

Do you need WiFi for this?

    • Ashley

Yes it works off of wifi.

  8. Ashley

I purchased this for our 3rd baby- it helped ease those new born anxieties I had. Also you can resell them for close to what you pay so it ends up not being too bad price wise
