More Walmart

Get ready to say goodbye to Walmart Savings Catcher!

That’s right! Walmart has decided to discontinue the Savings Catcher Program effective May 14th, 2019. This means that after May 14th, you will no longer be able to submit your Walmart Pay eReceipts to Savings Catcher. 😔

However, the money you have earned on your Savings Catcher eGift Card will remain yours to spend until you’re ready to use it in-store or online – there is no deadline by which you need to spend the eGift Card/rewards. Click here for more information about the program discontinuation.

What are your thoughts on this program coming to an end? Did you use it regularly or will you not really notice when it goes away?

(Thanks, Amber, Cristen, Allison, Ellen & taminator!)

It’s funny how my Walmart said they no longer accepted coupons because I could get better savings through Savings catcher. And yet two months later they take that away, too. One of the many reasons 95% of my shopping is now done at Kroger.

    • kayti

I have so many issues with my Walmart. I go out of my way to avoid it!

    • Melody

I agree 100%! I switched over about 6 months ago to Kroger/Fred Meyer and have found even more deals there than i do at Walmart. I now avoid Walmart like the Plague! Terrible service, dirty stores and scary people!!!!

      • Sue

I agree with the scary people. I don’t feel safe going to the Walmarts in my area!

        • Bertie

Yes! I also avoid Walmart because of the people. It’s so sketchy and dirty in there!! I’m fine with paying higher prices to shop in a clean, safe environment.

          • Sharon

Walmart prices are higher than other stores on many items. I do most grocery (food) shopping at King Soopers. I only use Walmart for clothes and hard goods like TP and toothpaste.

      • Sheila

Agreed! Not a store I want to support.

    • jimk

Add me to the agree list. I pick up a specific deal there now and then and get the rest from Kroger and Amazon.

    • Ihearthip

I have several Walmart’s to choose from and most are clean and decent so I guess I’m fortunate. I still go occasionally, but now with Kroger Clicklist I am doing the majority of my shopping at Kroger. It’s convenient and there have been great deals and coupons!

Not surprised to see the Savings Catcher go. That seems to be what happens. Something that is deemed a deal-getter is actually just a marketing experiment. They get the data they need and then they shut it down, on to the next thing.

    • Diana Walker

I was surprised recently to find out that Walmart doesn’t do price match anymore.

  2. Ashley

After they made it so hard to use I’m not surprised.

    • R

Yeah, when I got the email today, it was a hard eye roll. I didn’t save much with it anyway since I buy offbrand most of the time, but the hoops you had to jump through to use it now made me quit altogether months ago.

    • uscmanrob

When WM first stated the program, it was quite easy to rack up $5 or more on a typical cart of $50 – $60 worth of groceries. That was obviously costing them too much, so they “fixed” it by changing their product descriptions to “abbreviations” so that fewer of them actually matched the competitors ads. From that point on, the savings each trip dropped to $1 or less. Their next move was to make it harder to use by no longer allowing you to manually scan the receipts, you had to use Wal-Mart pay through your phone app. That eliminated all but the most tech-savvy people. Now, the final nail in the coffin, good riddance.

  3. Danielle

I stopped using it after you could no longer submit paper receipts. It never worked when I tried doing the Walmart pay receipt…so frustrating.

    • Nicole

Same! I hated you had to use Walmart pay to get it. Once they dropped the paper receipt option I quit.

  4. Alexandra

I used it everyone I went to Walmart. Didn’t save me that much but I loved that it kept my receipts!
    When does it end?

    • Sharon

You can still use Walmart Pay. That is what saves your receipts.

  5. Kim

I loath Walmart. I’d rather pay a lil more and go to our grocery store or Target.

    • kerRI

Yes me too. When we are in florida its publix, & any publix shopper knows their prices are generally higher than walmart, but its cleaner, quicker and nicer people (staff or customers). When in RI its stop & shop & same applies price wise but ill be damned, if i dont avoid walmart at all costs. The staff and customers at walmart (ESP in fl) are out of control rude and unknowledgeable.

      • R

Hmm, I live in Florida and my Walmart is fine. Not scary, in the newer section of town. My grocery pickup people are so polite and accommodating. In fact, I always bristle about the comparison of it to Target – my Target’s CS is so rude. God help you if you want to price match and the people working the Drive Up clearly feel hassled that they even have to walk orders out of the building. Aside from their BOGOs, Publix is notoriously expensive compared to anything else in the area. So it’s almost like it matters who actually works at these stores and not just the company name 🤷‍♀️

        • kerRI

kissimmee/orlando line. Ill leave it at that…🤣

          • R

Trust me, visitors from the northeast have their own reputation, too…

  6. KHH

I have not been to Walmart in a year and a half. Just another reason I’m glad I gave them up!!

  7. shannon

This is so frustrating! Yet another reason to hate Walmart. I haven’t seen it officially posted by Walmart but I am not surprised. I shopped there instead of going to Publix and Winn Dixie so I guess I will be taking my business elsewhere. I saved a lot of money using this program. At most of our stores they have also started cutting down on the number of actual cashiers too and have replaced them w/ self checkouts.

    • micnic

I received an email from them about it….

  8. Kathryn

Wasn’t this supposed to replace ad matching? Would like to see that return.

    Won’t miss it, never used.

  9. coulter

Im always curious, nearly EVERYBODY i talk to says they avoid walmart & hardly ever shop there, yet its like the highest money making store. Lol some people are fibbing…🤣

    • Shannon

And it’s always super crowded lol

    • Ok

Because in a lot of small towns, they are the only option. They monopolize.

  10. Mrsyancy

I love Walmart. I’m almost always able to find what i need, and it’s one stop shopping. The savings catcher gig was a joke, but it doesn’t make or brake anything for me.

  11. It’sMe

I love Walmart! Especially my Neighborhood Market one, the employees are super nice and helpful. My store is clean and the pick up service is so quick and convenient!

    • Sharon

Does the pickup service cost? If someone is shopping for you seems like it would. I won’t do it if it costs.

      • Alyssa

It’s free and I love it!

      • Tonya

It does not cost anything extra

      • Sarah

It’s free and my local Walmart does an awesome job. I never loved shopping at Walmart, but it’s our only option for many things here, so I am grateful to have one.

      • Kristin

I also use the Walmart Pickup. It’s been AMAZING. And no fees, or hidden fees. Minimum order is $30, which is easy to you. The car loaders don’t even accept tips! Totally worth the time saved physically in the store.

I just add stuff to my cart like a shopping list throughout the week, and when I’m ready I pick a pickup time window, and show up! You don’t even have to get out of your car.

  12. Brian

They lost me when forced to buy on app.

    • Sharon

What app did you buy? I have their app. It does not cost.

      • Kel

I think Brian means buying through the app using Walmart Pay.

      • Lauren

She meant you had to use Walmart pay to purchase, not that you had to buy an app.

    • Tracy Whitten

Same. I have about $35 still stuck in it that can’t get! 😠

      • ljc1976

I also have have money stuck in savings catcher. 73.00 and I have tried calling and sending emails, no one can help. Even at store level they have no idea how to help…I am gonna keep trying because Walmart has enough of my money. Any one have any suggestions to get my money out of savings catcher account???

        • CJay

It should apply to your total at checkout when you use the app to pay.

        • uscmanrob

ijg -You have to set up WMpay in the app and link it to one of your cards (debit, credit, etc.). When you get to the register, be sure to use your phone app to “pay” for your order. Once you get all your money used up, you can go back in and delete your linked card from the app.

  13. Keri

So disappointed… used it every visit! Saved $23.44 just since the program change in October… lifetime savings is currently $173.19. I love being guaranteed the lowest price available!

    • Sharon

You must buy lots of name brands. I hardly saved anything but I buy mostly Walmart brands. Walmart isn’t all that cheap though. I get most items as cheap or cheaper at KS.

  14. Jennifer Z

I stopped using it when I couldn’t scan my paper receipts anymore. I still shop there but only for products that I can’t get at my local grocery store or Target. Oh and if there’s a really good ibotta deal that’s only available there.

    • Amy

I also only go to Walmart when there are good Ibotta deals. Haven’t used savings catcher since they stopped letting you scan paper receipts as well.

      • cooper

Same here. I hate WalMart. Everything about the store makes shopping horrible and I’ve been to many Walmarts – all of them are the same – Always very long lines (never any cashiers open), rude employees, store not stocked well, and the clientele are always rude.

        • Ok

          Yup, sounds like Walmart.

  15. Amesy

Was it though? Good while it lasted I mean. It was an awful idea, both iterations of it. Never worked correctly, and the time wasted trying to get it to work wasn’t worth the trifling sum of money you got back. I would like to add: I second the return of ad match, but I fear Wal-Mart has decided that it needs to eek out every last dime it can from consumers. I stopped going as much when they started doing the “warehouse look” of the merchandise shelf stocking, and I couldn’t find an associate that could/would help me. I think the decline in Wal-mart is a physical manifestation of the way they treat both consumers and workers. As in not particularly well.

    • Holly

How would you even ad match now that we have to be the cashier too? I’m waiting until I am required to stock the shelves as well. We had water in our finished basement this week and my husband went to get box fans at 11:30pm and found only one. When he asked if they had more they told him they did but they weren’t going to bring them out until next Wednesday. No empathy and pure utter laziness.

      • Amesy

Oh, Walmart is definitely trying to get you to cashier yourself. Every time, no matter how short or long the line is, I’m approached to go “give self checkout a try! It’s fabulous! Like a dinging, self serve party where a screen keeps yelling at you to place intem in the bagging area over there!” Hard pass. Not unless you pay me. You must be in the Midwest as well. I had 2 rooms full of water, and I’d just paid good money last fall to have professional landscaping work done so that wouldn’t happen. I’m one of those ” get a manager” types. Considering how anxiety inducing the situation was, at least your husband kept his cool. I would not. I hope you’re getting dried out and fingers crossed this nice weather combined with snow melt doesn’t cause even more problems.

    • Ok

They don’t pay or threat their employees well so most of the time they look miserable. They also do not emphasize customer service, so that is why there is hardly anyone around to help you when you need it.

  16. Luv2save2

I love my Walmart! I used the savings catcher every time I shopped there. Wasn’t much, but every little bit helps.

  17. Deal Dawg

Wal-Mart makes you jump through more hoops to use the app, eliminating the receipt submission option , now cancels it altogether. It sounds like they were hoping more customers would quit it after the changeover. I used it and every penny of savings adds up. I’ve gotten back over $300 since I started using the app. I agree with others, it makes me want to shop elsewhere. This was the main reason I shopped at Walmart. I am curious how many shoppers they will lose over this cancellation.

  18. Deb

Walmarts in my northern state are all quite nice. However, I stopped using savings catcher when I could no longer take a photo of the receipt with my camera. I do not own a cell phone. I now shop at Aldi’s even though it is twice the distance for me.

  19. Pooja Garg

I only shop at Walmart for clearance things only! My Walmart is great I know many of the managers who are great but employees are rude, shelves messy

  20. Amber

I love the Walmart in our area. Their prices are already low compared to the grocery stores available so I never really got much back in savings catcher anyway. It was nice to accumulate the little amount here and there but eliminating it isn’t a big deal for me in the long run.

  21. Jen

I use Walmart quite a bit – used them before the Savings Catcher. So much easier to do one-stop shopping since they offer more hardware, automotive, and sports/outdoor items. Just got $5 muck boots for my kiddo to use for at the barn and spray paint for a makeover project.

  22. Polly

I will miss it, even though it took a while the savings did add up. I’ve saved over $200 since I started using it. I liked using the Walmart pay to submit my receipt, easier than scanning the receipt. It’s too bad it’s ending.

  23. warrencubed

I stopped shopping at Walmart when they stopped price matching. Prices are way better at Kroger when you shop their sales and use coupons! Aldi’s prices are unbeatable as well! I’m so done with Walmart!

  24. JanMc

So disappointing!! I relied on that extra money at Christmas each year.
It certainly will change my grocery shopping instead of only Walmart. I will definitely go to the store with the best ads. Walmart slowly increases the “hottest items” prices anyway.
A positive point….by shopping at other stores I’m no longer in ridiculous long lines with rude cashiers 🙂

  25. Bardda

Our neighbor market is great! I can’t stand going to a super center. Anything we need that the neighbor market doesn’t have I have WalMart ship it to my neighbor store.

  26. Loretta

I never used this particular app. I shop at Walmart as much ss possible. They have saved me a ton on groceries and prescriptions. I have a couple Walmart markets that I go to that are newer and nice. The employees in Walmart Market and Super Walmart are always super friendly and helpful. I like the self check-outs, but if I really don’t want to ring it and bag it myself, there’s always cashiers available. If I have a problem, they are quick to help in the self-checkout.

  27. Brianne

I give Walmart 5-10 years max & they’ll be out of business. I rarely shop there since they quit ad matching. I can get better deals shopping sales at my local grocery store & Target.

Walmart has went to way too many self check outs, they now have a machine that drives the isles to see what needs restocked instead of an employee, the quality of their items has went downhill, stores are a cold industrial look, no more weekly sales, no ad matching, etc… not the friendly hometown business it used to be

    • R

Walmart literally is the largest retailer (perennially , I might add) and makes $380 BILLION more than its next closest competitor! All that you described about restocking robots, low quality products, no price matching, declining customer service, etc., sounds a lot like Amazon and unfortunately, it seems to be working well for them, too.

    • Ok

When was walmart a friendly hometown business? Lol they have always been that way. They are stingy and cut corners any way they can. They’re trying to move on to the “Neighborhood Market” model to compete with smaller stores like Walgreens. I see more of those growing.

  28. Luann Schroeder

I always used it when I turned in the receipt but when they started where you had to use your phone I could never
get it to work right. Even the clerks tried to help me. Not good reception in store.

  29. Brooke

    I have just one word… ALDI! 😀

  30. Christal

I am very disappointed that they are discontinuing this program. I hate Wal-Mart and even hate the long lines more. However, I have to go there for items that I can’t get at Aldi. I feel like they seem to always find ways to make more money from employees and customers.

    • Brooke

Christal, did you hear about the whole Kohl’s and Aldi merge that our girls at Hip2Save posted about recently? I’m crossing my fingers that the alliance will give Walmart a run for their money or at least influence them to make some positive changes!

  31. Kelli

I avoid Wal-Mart as much as possible. I would rather drive out of town to Target and pay more to have a better shopping experience. I hate they are taking away Savings Catcher but it doesn’t surprise me. Wal-Mart better clean it up and step it up or they will be going away like so many other places…yet would it be such a great loss?

  32. Tracey

I don’t necessarily love Walmart I hate that I always spend more money there then I would like lol. But I literally live across the street from one so it just saves me from driving 30 plus minutes to go to another store. I love Kroger’s but it’s 45 min from me so what I would save there on groceries I save in gas just going across the street. My store is also very clean and I haven’t really meat any mean or rude ppl (customers or associates) at my store. The savings catcher saved me and I loved seeing my savings. I’m sure they will be thinking of something hopefully better to save their customers.

  33. Rachel

Doesn’t change anything for me. In a small town, it’s really the only option unless I want to pay 3x as much at the local mom and pop grocery store. I go in there if I need a few things bc I want to support local business but I can’t afford to all the time. So I’m stuck with Walmart, whether I like it or not.

  34. Cindy

I found that out today. But Meijer Perks and Target Cartwheel have always blown Walmart’s little Savings Catcher away and they are superior stores. In fact I drive sixty miles to Meijer and Target just to shop at those two stores. Savings Catcher never caught any of the sales in my area anyway.

    • Cherryluva

I LOVE meijers savings PLUS they actually have sales on meat! Our meijer NEVER has lines, isnt dirty, has nice cashiers has a starbucks inside, they actually have SALES unlike walmart plus i can clip their coupons online. Granted, some things are expensive, but its like any other store, you have to know how to use their savings program and shop clearance and sales.

  35. Regina

I honestly can say I will be buying less at Walmart. I buy as much as I do because of the savings catcher. I loved it because I would keep that money aside to buy my husband birthday and anniversary gifts.

  37. Amy

My family no longer shops at Walmart. So many other options. They’re not the cheapest option any longer, and treat us like criminals every time we try to coupon, and we are TIRED of it.

Walmart is horrible. I will never go back.

  38. Shirley Copperwheat

I hate shopping at Walmart now. Their shelves are always empty and you have to fight going around them putting stock up during the day instead of the way they used to do it at night. You have to also fight trying to get around the carts the workers are using to do the online shopping. They should do that at night also.

    • Cherryluva

Ive noticed thatbroo, stocking during thr day, even on saturdays when its SUPER busy. Makes for some really annoyed angry people, not only are the workers in the way, their huge long carts and pallets are too.

  39. M.E

My walmart in Sugar Land, Texas is niece, not scary, clean and organized, not to mention spacious and bright, I have no complain; I really use their app and I’m sad to see it go.

  40. Michele

I will no longer shop at Walmart if this is discontinued!

  41. Kcmiami

It always screwed me out of so much money! I would find lower prices on almost everything I bought but yet the savings catcher would tell me there were no lower prices found. I figured it didn’t have much of a future. They need to just go back to price matching like target!

  42. Kcaspie143

I feel like Walmart’s prices are higher now, & I was upset when they discontinued the submission of paper receipts for Savings Catcher. I rarely go to Walmart anymore…I still miss Kmart and love Aldi.

  43. Vicky

I use the savings catcher all the time. Be sad for it to go.

  44. llaura256

With Target having cartwheel and gift card deals and HEB (Awesome grocery chain in Texas)has coupon apps and freebies. How the hell does Walmart survive? I guess when more people catch on you can pretty much get everything at Target instead of Walmart in a much nicer store with incentives then, maybe then Walmart will try and catch up. Because right now they suck and most of the employees seem sad….just a thought.

    • R

But you can’t get everything at Target. We have a super target and I couldn’t even get grapes or cilantro out of their produce section. Their grocery selection is terrible.

    • Ok

Heb is awesome! And yes they always give away freebies and store coupons, plus they have the combo deals!

  45. Jean

I rarely shop at Walmart so it’s not that big a deal for me.

  46. hip2trade

I shop at Walmart some but I quit using savings catcher a long time ago. It never seem to catch the lower prices so I gave up on it. A bigger fan of in store price match. I shop bogos at Publix and it ends up being cheaper than Walmart on most items. Plus Publix is more coupon friendly. Walmart acts like anyone that uses coupons is trying to pull a stunt of some sort. Practically treated like a criminal. If I coupons there now I go through self checkout. Makes it a bit easier, at least for me.

  47. Mayra

It suck that they are doing this. That was the only reason i would go to walmart. I guess May 14 will be my last day at walmart .

  48. Kristen

I live in California and our town has 4 Walmarts. I do all my grocery shopping there and I have used Savings Catcher since it started. I have collected over $1800 since it started. I purposely go through the ads and purchase items that I know I will get money back on. I have bought my Grandkids Xmas gifts, Birthday gifts and everything I need for them using my Savings Catcher. So I’m a little sad its ending but diffently not surprised!

  49. Jacob

Me being a former 19 year assc ..I seen this coming for years..They took our price matching/Comp away 6 months after they introduced the “SAVINGS CATCHER” Walmart being the tyrant as they are thru the years blowing mom & pop stores out of the water… I hope the Wal*mart Stock drops ..Now killing a lot of there competitors as for the prices.. Yep now Walmart is going to “TRY” to squeeze more money out of there customers… (SHAME ON YOU WALMART!!!)

  50. Lily

I’m super bummed about this!!! I collected quite a bit of change with Savings Catcher!!! This is horrible news!!! Well, it was nice while it lasted (while it lasts).
