Don’t want the credit card? Get all the same perks with a debit card!

Consider signing up for the debit card instead of the credit version to receive the same perks, no annual fee, and no credit check required. The debit card is tied to your existing checking account so you can also withdraw up to $40 cash at checkout in-store.

Items excluded from the $40 off coupon – gift cards, prepaid cards, alcohol, milk, select baby brands, Levi’s Red Label, LEGO, Bose, JBL, Sonos, Apple, Fitbit, Tile, Google Home/Mini/Hub, LG OLED TV, Samsung TVs, GoPro, DSLR cameras & lenses, mobile contracts, Nintendo hardware and Switch games, PS4 hardware, Xbox One hardware, Simple Human, Traeger, Harry’s, Flamingo, power shave, power dental, Tylenol and Motrin pain relief, clinic & pharmacy, and Target Optical.

I have a Target debit card version. I like it. It doesn’t hit your account immediately. I think they process the transactions on Wednesdays. So if you use it after a certain time on Wednesday or any day after Wednesday it doesn’t hit your account until the next Wednesday. (I can’t remember if that’s Target or my bank that processes it that way though). But as long as you keep a proper check register it’s no issue because you know you used it and deduct it from your balance.

I’ve had a Target debit card for probably 7 years or so. I like the 5% off, the special coupons they send, including the anniversary bonus coupon and free shipping promos. We’ve never had a security issue either. Plus, being able to have it linked to your app makes checkout easy.

Hi I’ve had my Target debit card for close to 10 yrs and when I make a purchase, it hits my bank account in 2-3 days. So it totally depends on your bank. Love the debit, no complaints, you still get free shipping too!

If I have a redcard debit (linked to my bank account) and I apply for a redcard credit card and still get the promo?

    • Mayra

I have the opposite question as Kristy…I currently have the REDcard credit card….if I sign up for the REDcard debit card will I be able to get this promo?

      • Marie

I have a similar question to both! I have a credit and debit card, but I no longer use the account tied to my debit card. Can I get 2nd debit card which would be tied to a different/new bank account and still be eligible?

    • Shannon

They said in a previous post that they verified that if you have one, you CAN do the other and get the coupon

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Yes! I did speak with customer service to confirm that.

I’ve never signed up before and so I thought this would be a simple process but geez, they want enough info for buying a house. They did 3 change debits in my account and then said I will find out in 7-10 days …crazy but I did the whole thing not knowing so I sure hope I get at least $40 credit for all this trouble.

    • Amanda

I found their follow=up email in my junk folder. I followed the directions for the small charges and will get the debit card in the mail

  3. Amanda

I really want to do this but we are closing on a house in a few weeks and I don’t want to do anything to mess with my credit. Hopefully this comes around again.

    • Jane

Amanda, if you apply for the debit card, there is no credit check per the previous post. I hope that helps! It’s a great deal =) Good luck with your new house!

  4. Cindy

Why does it need to be reviewed in 7-10 days?

    • karen

Few months ago I applied for a Target credit card online got that note too. Then I got letter that application denied (I have excellent credit and have a target debit card).. I was pissed I did not call to verify why.. 2 days ago I tried to apply again and was approved immediately.

  5. karen

I was wondering if anybody has gotten their new card yet (from the previous posting)? They said the coupon should come with the card. I applied a couple of days ago and email said card should is arriving this week (fingers crossed)

    • Monique

Karen I received my card a couple of weeks ago from the last promo and yes the coupon was included 🙂

I wanted to do this, but after Target got hacked a few years back I’m to afraid to have my bank account tied to a Target Debit Card. I have the Target Credit Card and love it because it doesn’t have access to my bank account. To bad Target didn’t offer a $40 savings to a Target Credit Card, but it’s just not worth it to me to apply for a debit card.

    • Peaches

Target doesn’t store your Pin so the debit cards weren’t hacked when the incident occurred… only the credit accounts were compromised.

  7. Becca

My husband has a target debit card that is linked to our bank account. Can I open my own debit card that is linked to the same bank account???

    • Christina

No it will get denied, we tried it. I think I will try this time with the savings account number.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks correct. Thanks for the helpful feedback!

  9. Rondene

  10. Alexandra

My Family & I have saved a TON with your tips.

Can you use the debit card with online purchases?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      Yes!

  12. Heather

Sweet! I didn’t even realize that they had a debit card!

Is there an annual fee on the credit card?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi there! I did confirm with customer service that there is no current annual fee on the credit card. Hope that helps!

  16. countrygal

Forgot to ask other question, can you use the $40 coupon online? Sorry to be such a bother.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

No worries! I’m glad to check on that for you! I did speak with customer service. The coupon will include a code to use online. 😊

  17. covergirl81

Just want to give a heads up – I received my card in the mail today with NO coupon – I applied on July18th, but they didn’t approve it until July 29th – I called Target and supposedly they are sending out a replacement coupon. We will see.
