I was gifted one yesterday. Any tips on keeping it alive and looking beautiful?

My mother has an orchid and it always looks great. Her routine is easy: 2 ice cubes placed at base every Monday. She says that the problem is most people over water them. Pick a day and seems easy. She also has it on the table with indirect light.

I was just about to comment the same! Indirect light, and an ice cube once a week (can do two). They do not like a lot of water. Thanks, 1southernbelle!

Thanks ladies! An ice cube or two is a great suggestion. I can do that 😉 Do you typically re pot them or leave as is?

          • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

LEAVE them alone! They are finicky and don’t like change!

      • Berrysaves

        I second this!

Oh thanks. I’m always afraid to purchase bcus I have no idea how to keep one fresh and alive 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

You are welcome! My orchid also does not like drafts, so it’s best not to put it by an open window or an area with an open door, Nita!

I’ll stick to my fake orchid from Costco. People always think it’s real and give me compliments on it. 😂 Just dust off occasionally and nobody knows.

The experts will say east or south window. Mine is in a north window and does beautifully. Also, once a week I take it to the kitchen sink and run warm water through it. I wait until ALL the water drips through before putting it back in its second pot. Mine is actually planted in a clear solo cup. I transplanted it from a clear shot glass sized pot to a small wine size one. I used Miracle Grow orchid potting “soil”.

Thanks! I bought one for myself and 3 more for gifts. They look gorgeous and healthy.

      Yay! You’re welcome, Brianna!

I have not been very successful with the ice method. An orchid expert says that is just a gimmick. Better to flush water through the pot once or twice a week.

I have one friend that didn’t have luck with it either. She flushes water through it once a week and leaves it alone otherwise.
