I always come SO close to booking these deals whenever you guys post about Royal Caribbean. I have never actually pulled the trigger because the environmental impact of Cruise Lines makes me too upset. I did some research… Disney has an A- rating while RC has an F with regard to the environment. I’m going to cough up the extra money and do a Disney Cruise because our oceans matter!

Also interesting info on this – Watch Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj on Netflix or YouTube, “The Real Cost of Cruises.”

I went on my first cruise earlier this year. It was a little too much for me. Too many people, not enough space on the ship to have any real privacy. Too much alcohol, I don’t drink but the “all you can drink” packages were a little ridiculous. Every table being cleaned had enough wasted food on it to feed an entire family. The ship pushed you to shop till you drop, even handing out maps the day before port that pointed out all the places to shop while in port. I watched an art auction where some people paid thousands of dollars for “rare” pieces. Is this really why people enjoy cruising so much? To just eat and drink and shop to excess? My young kids had fun at the water park, although we never were able to take advantage of the kids club since my 3 and 4 year old didn’t want to be left alone with strangers (can’t blame them).

It wasn’t all bad though. Tokey, the gentleman who cleaned our room was amazing. I spent a lot of time talking to him about his family back in Jamaica. He supports 14 people (wife, 4 children, 2 nephews, his and his wife’s parents, his brother, and 2 sister-in-laws) with the wages and tips he makes on the ship. We had a stop in Jamaica and went on an excursion. The country is really suffering, almost 75% of the population is unemployed and impoverished. On the way to our destination, we saw people dangling off the sides of pick-up trucks because the people who are lucky enough to have jobs can’t afford the gas to get to work. After the excursion, we ate some jerk chicken and rice, which was wonderful. The most memorable part of the entire trip was watching the service staff take all the plates from the tourists and scrape the leftover rice and chicken bones into bags. They were SAVING the food to feed there families and animals. We went on excursions at the other two ports as well and definitely plan on going back to both locations, except next time I will fly and stay a week on the ground instead of the 5 hours we were allotted during our time in port.
If you do decide to cruise, skip the shopping on the ship and the all you can drink pass and instead tip your wait staff, the people who clean your room, and the local people who take you on your excursions a little extra.
If you have never been on a cruise, I encourage you to go at least once for the experience. Just make sure your experience is seen through the right lens. Don’t mean to be a Debbie downer, just wanted to share my experience.
