need help for apple watch owners. would like to buy one for my hubby. is this the “best” deal and “best one” to get him. there are too many kinds of apple watches out there and my head is spinning. any help is much appreciated.

I have the gps only and love it. Personally didn’t want to spend $300 plus on a watch so i opted for the series 3. I’d say it depends on use… if you want to just use the watch for calls or texts and leave the phone at home.. you’ll need cellular but keep in mind this does cost extra on your phone bill. If your phones always near by the gps only will get calls and texts but if it’s out of range from the watch it won’t. I use mine for workouts, to see calls and texts mainly and the 3 series gps works just fine! Hope that helps 🙂

so if phone is close by like in other room, your current cellular service will work with watch but if you leave your phone home, this watch won’t work or will it work and you will get a bill from cellular company.

        • Nichole

Correct, with gps only your phone has to be close by as with the cellular option you can leave your phone at home and gets calls and texts to the watch. They both essentially work exactly the same but the gps only needs the phone “within” range for the texts and calls to come to the watch and doesn’t cost any extra monthly charge.

For reference I got the series 3 GPS only for $189. I believe i seen them as low as $169 on Black Friday this year.

I agree with everything nichole said. I have the series 3 gps only($169) and have no desire to upgrade. I really don’t see any reason to. I don’t have cellular because it’s $10 more a month and I pretty much always have my phone with me.

Also, I’m a long distance runner and very active otherwise, but I still need to phone because the watch doesn’t support overdrive or hoopla, I use to listen to audio books.

Honestly the risk of breaking is high (I’m on my third) so I would either get insurance or stick with one of the cheaper ones (like the series 3 gps). Even with insurance I think you have to pay something if it breaks.

Truly I use every function on this watch and I totally find the 3 to be enough for me.

This is not the newest model. The apple watch 5 came out a month or two ago fyi. It is still a really good deal. there are huge differences between the 3 and 4. Not too many between the 4 and 5 in my opinion.

What a great deal! If only I liked the gold color. 😕

  3. Micci

I have an Apple Watch question. I have an iPhone and I really just want the watch for workout purposes. I want to know my heartrate. Is the 3 series sufficient for that purpose? Thank you!

    • meganph

The Apple Watch is great for heart rate tracking during workouts but not at rest. It doesn’t do 24/7 like other fortress trackers. It just depends on when you went it to measure your heart rate.

    • Gisette

I have the Series 3 with cellular and the heart rate monitor works well.

    • Micci

      Thank you for the input!!

One other thing to consider between GPS only and the GPS+Cellular is the latter one has more memory. I have the GPS+Cellular but have never added it to my cell phone plan. I use mine to workout, mainly run, but listen to music off an iTunes playlist and I didn’t want to be limited to the number of songs on the playlist. It’s like your phone – the more apps and things you want to store on the watch, the more memory it takes.

and Micci – i think the GPS only will be fine for you. Yes, it’ll show heart rate.

I’ve never had an Apple Watch and wonder if the series 3 is going to be eligible for updates later on since it’s older (2 series older). Just wondering if it’s safer to get a series 4. I want to be able to use it a long time before having to upgrade to a newer model. Any advice is appreciated. TIA.

    • Sam

Series 1 and 2 are still updating, I would not be worried.

      • Nichole

Yeah i wouldn’t worry there, i just upgraded from the series one and it still updated no problem.

I got the very first Apple Watch. Stopped wearing for a while and now it won’t charge. I’m guessing the battery is dead. Anyone replace their battery? Don’t know if I should upgrade or replace battery on new one. Any thoughts?

    • Nichole

I had the series one and my battery swelled, known issue for Apple but it was out of warranty. It was $75 to replace the battery… a series 3 you can find for $169 now so cost wise that’s up to you. I’d opt for a new one since it’s not much different and it’s much faster.

I saw the Walmart ad $129 my husband be getting that one ☝️ his old fashion in technology, and my daughter said he be calling her to learn how to use it – he said he don’t care he wants one at least to tell time, whatever he desires
