Amazon is struggling to keep up with grocery deliveries.

The coronavirus crisis has led to an unprecedented demand for grocery deliveries as shoppers try to limit their trips to the store and look for alternate ways to purchase food.

Despite “working around the clock to expand services,” Amazon has found itself among the grocery delivery services that are struggling to keep up with the increase in customer demand. As a result, Amazon has announced that its grocery delivery services will temporarily stop accepting new customers.

Effective immediately, any new Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market delivery and pickup customers will be asked to sign up and wait for an invitation (as seen in the image directly above). Amazon is working to increase its capacity each week, and will invite new customers from the waitlist to shop as resources allow.

Amazon is also taking steps to help current grocery customers that have been frustrated by a lack of available delivery time slots for Amazon Fresh and Amazon Prime Now. The company recently added 70 new Whole Foods pickup locations, nearly doubling the number of participating Whole Foods Markets from 80 to 150.

Amazon has also started releasing delivery windows throughout the day, making it easier for customers to see when the next delivery window is available by including this information on Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market.

The company is also trying to meet increased demand by hiring more shoppers and launching a new feature that will give customers a chance to secure their virtual “place in line.” Previously, Prime users could only snag a slot by shopping at a time when a shopper was available. Now, delivery times will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We still expect the combination of restricted capacity due to social distancing and customer demand will continue to make finding available delivery windows challenging for customers,” Stephenie Landry, vice president of grocery delivery at Amazon, wrote in an Amazon Day One blog post. “If you are able to do so safely, we kindly encourage our customers who can to shop in-person.”

It’s ok. I haven’t’ been able to get a delivery slot in three weeks. It’s getting harder and harder to stay home in NJ.

Haven’t gotten a slot since this whole thing started and I’m in NY. All of these opened slots seem like a ploy to keep us as members at this point

I’ve been waiting to get the invitation for a month and still haven’t gotten it. I guess I won’t get it during this pandemic period.

I know how frustrating this experience is for us all. I had my first home delivery scheduled after an eleven day wait only to have the service “reschedule’ my delivery without contacting me first. As a result, I cancelled the entire order. I ventured into my local grocery store at 6:30 am, mask, gloves and list ready. I observed physical distancing (we in CA have been home bound for over 4 weeks now) and managed to find almost everything my family needed in 45 minutes. It worked for me and I wish us all safety and good health through this crisis.

I emailed Harris Teeter about there never being spots available for pickup or delivery. I was told that new spots are opened at 10pm each night for the next available day (for me it’s 6 days out). Although I do have to order sort of far in advance, at least I can get the basics which is all I need. Also, it says to call your store to modify your order but when I called to add one thing to my order last week, they said they were not able to modify them at this time.
So glad to be able to utilize this service as I have underlying conditions that could make getting covid very scary for me; my DH has been doing the shopping so this helps him from having to enter the store.
Maybe other stores do this as well if you don’t shop at HT or have any near you.

I tried once and all slots were already taken. (NY)….Just like a previous poster said I went early to supermarket with a list and all precautions(mask, gloves & social distancing etc. while in there)…so it’s doable. I also saw on the news about people unable to leave their homes and how much they rely on online ordering because their immune system could be seriously compromised. So I don’t bother anymore to order online from Fresh or Whole Foods in hopes that someone that really is unable to venture out is able to get an available window time for their groceries/deliveries. Stay healthy and safe everyone!

New customers are not missing out. I’m a long time customer and have not been able to get a delivery slot, for weeks. The site says slots are opened throughout the day, but I have yet to see it. One day, I hit refresh every few minutes ALL DAY. I have since checked it about 1,000 times! I don’t believe slots are actually opening at my location in NJ. I was surprised, since they initially planned to ramp up deliveries during the pandemic.
