I have two of these tanks and they are great! Perfect for smaller fish or betta.
I don’t know much about fish, but would like to get a low maintenance pet for my 4 year old son. How much maintenance is involved in caring for fish. Any recommendations for type of fish to get?
Fresh water fish are not much maintenance at all. Don’t over feed them and the tank won’t get dirty as fast. And you need to add water to the tank sometimes when you notice it getting low (when the air is dry here I feel like I’m filling it more often like once a week pouring a couple cups of water in) some easy fish are guppies and platy. We have a 5 gallon tank with two female guppies and one male. We just feed them a few flakes every morning and they’ve been happily living for months. You can also order a magnetic scrubber where one piece is on the outside of the tank and the scrubber is on the inside. You just rub it around the walls once every couple weeks and it keeps it clean. The small size is like $6.99 on amazon.

You need to do regular water changes not just top off with fresh water. Smaller tanks actually require more maintenance due to the water parameters not being as stable as in a larger aquarium. Also, please learn about the nitrogen cycle to successfully keep fish. Most new fish keepers have their fish die from ammonia poisoning because they do not cycle their tanks properly.
I personally think fish keeping is not that easy and often times mysterious. Even with fish that are considered “beginner.” I have a 30 gallon planted tank that was well cycled, well maintained (ie good water parameters, weekly water changes) and virtually no issues for 6 months…then bam! It’s been one issue after another. It’s reminded me why it’s been a decade since I last had an aquarium 😂 I have no real advice, except the person below is absolutely right – the bigger the tank, the less susceptible your water is to drastic changes that can harm or kill your fish before you can fix the issue.
Oh, and ignore that picture. You could never sustainably keep that many fish in a tank that small. Rule of thumb is 1 gallon for every 1 inch of fish.
We have one for our beta and it’s low maintenance and the beta seems happy, always swimming around.

Plan on buying a different filter, because the filters that come with these are typically garbage. I’ve had a couple small aquariums by this company, and have talked with others who have had the same experience with them.
I totally agree with what Heather said. We have a different version of this same tank (short instead of tall but still 2.5 gal). We had to quickly grab something because we accidentally bought my daughter a pregnant guppy 3 weeks earlier. We added a cheap $6 sponge filter off Amazon and it helps keep the water within proper parameters between water changes.
