No, he can play his games without it. The online membership lets him play additional games and play with his friends that also have the online membership.

This is the link when I searched through target for $19.99. Is it worth it though? We’ve had a switch since they came out, but this year our daughter is getting into it more. She’s wanting/getting animal crossing and just dance, but I’ve never really looked into what the online membership would offer game wise outside of the online playing.
