There’s a new Dollar General format popping up this year!

As we first reported in October, Dollar General is working on a new store concept called pOpshelf. These new stores are designed to provide a “differentiated shopping experience” for customers in suburban areas.

The new pOpshelf stores will be larger than the average Dollar General, with the goal of offering customers a less cluttered appearance and a more enjoyable shopping experience. Prices at pOpshelf stores are rounded to the nearest dollar, with 95% of the retailer’s items priced at just $5 or less.

There are currently eight pOpshelf stores operating in the US, with a total of 30 scheduled to open during the 2021 fiscal year. So far, pOpshelf locations have opened in Clarksville, TN, Hendersonville, TN, Garner, NC, Monroe, NC, Matthews, NC, Austell, GA, Cumming, GA and McDonough, GA.

Doesn’t everyone want a less cluttered experience at DG? I mean, I love the place, but it’s an obstacle course to get through sometimes! Why do the suburban areas get the nice new experience? Not complaining, just laughing out loud. 🤣

    • Twayna

      Agreed

    • Say What😤

I agree. Why the discrimination towards the Urban stores? Although I will benefit, I still think they should put some time and money into the urban stores.

Honestly, had those stores not made it possible for the company to turn a profit, would they even have been in the position to open new stores ? Hmm, chew on that!
Not fair to the loyal urban customers.

    • Scraig

Yes! We never get prototype stores!

      • John

It sounds suspiciously like 5 and under

        • Cindy

It’s not 5 and under but has some great buys. I visited the location in Concord NC and loved it

    • Nonya Businesss

There would be less clutter if corporate stopped opening stores and put their money into the stores they currently have! That company is a JOKE to work for and they are STINGY with store hours and payroll.

    • BC

I agree. That is why I stay out of them. Too junkie looking.

      • Pat Mock

        These are lovely stores
        …much like a Hobby Lobby!!!

I’m in love with the pop shelf location in Hendersonville!! It is all the stuff you love at dollar tree, with some stuff from dollar general but mixed in with classier stuff all in one. I redeemed my reward box for the candle box and got 5 decent size candles for FREE! They have organic cleaning stuff. Their beauty department is on point and actually have stuff for all skin tones. Also their home decor department is amazing!!! I could go on and on.

    Please come to Memphis! #901

    • Patty Manrique

Also come to southern california, like san diego california, PLEASE!!!

      • Gomez

California probably won’t have them because 99% of what they produce is cancer-causing. It’s low quality landfill material. We have so much produced already why would we make stores to sell plastic that’s not even recycled? It’s junk. Every once in a while there’s a need for something in their but mostly not.

  4. Barbara

that’s awesome. I live near Monroe NC so I will be checking this out. thanks.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      You’re so welcome, Barbara!

    • Sarah

I live close to Monroe, NC and was wondering what this new store was! Definitely popping in to shop more now!

  5. Nicole221

We don’t have this particular store but our dollar general has some of the cutest home decor ever. IMO It 100% compares to hobby lobby. I have had compliments on everything I have purchased from there. Hope this comes to my area!!

  6. kalynn

Sort of reminds me of Five Below

    • Tia in FL

I thought so too. We had several Five Below’s open this month in south Florida. They must be doing pretty well which is good to see.

    • yonawrites

I agree. Five Below is the first thing I thought of when I saw this…I’m on the East Coast, so I don’t think I’ll be seeing this store anytime soon. But if it does come here…it will definitely give Five Below a run for its money.

  7. mamasweetpea

saw a youtube video on this recently and can’t wait for it to be in our area. It does seem somewhat similar to fivebelow only that this is geared more towards the adult crowd. dollartree has been stepping up their game, so it’d be interesting to see what they offer at popshelf. Hope they open one nearby!

    • MommySpendsLess

I agree. A YouTuber I watch recently did a video just on PopShelf and my first thought was “Five Below for grown-ups!”
According to that video, some of their prices are better than Walmart’s, which would be nice since I hate/avoid shopping at Walmart.

I went to Popshelf today w/my sis in law and had to rave about our experience!! CUTEST store!! It has a little bit of everything (literally)! Arts and crafts, scrapbooking/journaling/planner supplies, faux flowers, outdoor items including gardening and pillows, potters, etc. Toys, dinner ware, food, party supplies, storage, cleaning, health and beauty, animal supplies and seasonal…and so much more! It is so clean and well organized. The prices vary from average (Mrs. Meyers for $4) to unbelievable!!! They have organic, keto friendly and gluten free food. Foods that you find in Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods and Harris Teeter for less than any of those stores! There is a center round about of self checkouts with sturdy bags. There was also an employee there encouraging us to sign up for the rewards program and gifted us a large box and goodies. You could pick from cat, beauty, candles and toys. I chose candle and got 5 of their 3oz yummy smelling candles to try! I cannot rave about it enough! It’s like dollar tree/dollar general but high end. It’s going to be my go to place from now on!

  14. Angela

They just said to keep checking the web site as that is where they would post any updates about an open date. Hope this helps! 🤗 ❤️
