International travel is about to get a little more expensive.

The cost of everything seems to be increasing these days, and your next US passport will soon cost you more money too.

The US State Department recently announced that the fee for a US passport book will increase by $20 for all customers. The price hike took effect on Monday, December 27th.

In a tweet, the State Department explained that “The increased fee is necessary to ensure we continue to produce one of the most secure travel and identity documents in the world.”

So how much will a US passport cost you now? There are several factors that determine the cost of an individual’s passport, including the type of passport desired, how quickly it’s needed, and whether it’s a new document or a passport renewal.

Thank goodness I just sent mine in to renew last week!

  2. Joan

I renewed mine in February 2020. lol

if you’re renewing, definitely pay the $ to get it expedited. They are way backlogged due to COVID and people aren’t getting their passports in time if they don’t pay for it to be expedited.

    • Sandra

oh AND pay for the next day shipping. We didn’t pay for these things and we barely got the passport before our international travel (5 months after applying, back when they were promising 4-6 week turnaround) only by flying to a city and getting an appointment at a passport center (booked at 8 am within 3 days of travel on their very busy lines). ended up being way more expensive that way and extremely stressful.

Sandra, not sure what one expects, but I sent mine in and quite literally 2 months later had it back — did not pay for expedited. Son just sent his in last Friday and they’ve cashed the check already, so I assume he’ll have his in record time as well — did not pay for expedited. I just hate to waste money where it’s not warranted.

When I saw the price hike I hurried and got an appointment for tomorrow to send my daughter’s off – sure enough. I got an email cancelling the appointment and was told to reschedule after the 27th. GRRRRRR

We had my daughters passport done and just got it back less than 6 weeks later, I was surprised. Now I have to renew my passport for a trip in April , but can’t until after we come back from a vacation I need it for next week.. and watch mine not be returned in time.

It depends how old your passport is . If it’s less then five years expired then you renew yourself from anywhere . Go online print out form add photo your old passport check to go along and mail it to the address listed

    • Tammy Jo

I went back and reread you need it for next week

I very much recommend if you have any kind of international travel or are even considering any kind of international travel in the coming months, then apply for/renew your passports and do expedited service!! And if the post office tells you to wait to call into NPIC to get an appointment 2 weeks before travel…. dont do what they say!! Apply right there at the post office and tell them you want to send it in! This is coming from someone who works at the National Passport Information Center and has to deal with this nonsense on a daily basis where people are currently calling to make an appointment because they booked a 10k$ trip 8 months in advance and never bothered to check the passports until 3 days before their travel, so they call in wanting an appointment, except everything for the next 2 weeks are already taken so they get mad at us because their 10k$ trip that is nonrefundable is about to go to waste because they didn’t plan things well at all. Or because travel came up 3 months ago but the post office gave them terrible info and told them to just wait until they’re within 2 weeks of the travel to call in and make an appointment with us. When in reality all the appointments are already taken for the next 2 weeks by the time they call in and they missed their chance to travel because of the misinformed post office peeps. So don’t be those people that have their travel ruined by bad planning or misinformation from the post office! APPLY AND EXPEDITE! Especially if you’re months ahead from your travel!!

H2S, please, please give us the option to block or hide comments/users. I love your blog, but it breaks my heart to see blatant racism and political vitriol on your posts.

    • PaoPao

THIS!! I just don’t feel like checking H2S when there are these kinds of comments. I can’t take any more racism and ignorance…

    • Melissa

Why not stop reading the comments? You know that there are people that want to chime in with their 2 cents.

  9. T

I am confused by some of these comments. I don’t see anything wrong.

    • Joe

There was someone earlier posting stuff

    • Anna

There are people that don’t know what racism means, they think it’s if you disagree with someone. Nothing bad was said.

      • PaoPao

You think there is nothing wrong with randomly adding “LGB” to a comment here? That reflects a racist, hateful ideology that has nothing to do with a money saving website

        • Anna

Hip2 save- you deleted my comments so why not these?

    • PaoPao

Someone provoked these comments by adding “LGB” to her comment. Completely unnecessary, just a troll move
